You may want to correct your thumbnail title - the name of the song is "Gimme Chocolate!!", not "Give Me Chocolate". BABYMETAL is not J-pop or J-metal, they are kawaii metal (more on that later). Just sayin'. The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . . You’ve opened a can of worms! They didn’t speak much English at that point but now they are virtually fluent, particularly lead singer, Suzuka Nakamoto( SU-METAL) Keep reacting you’re in for a lot of pleasant surprises. You may want to correct your thumbnail title - the name of the song is "Gimme Chocolate!!", not "Give Me Chocolate". BABYMETAL is not J-pop or J-metal, they are kawaii metal (more on that later). Just sayin'.
The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . .
You’ve opened a can of worms!
BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums with over fifty songs, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of recommended songs (along with suggested versions). The first sixteen are from what I've come to call "The Golden Age of BABYMETAL" or simply "The Yui Era". This list also includes all four songs of the BABYMETAL sub-group Black BABYMETAL (just Yui and Moa while Su is chilling):
