I wish we had more people like Leslie in the upper levels of government. I've met plenty of passionate, wonderful people in local government, but by the time they have the chance to move up to senator or congressman level, they're either changed for the worse or decide that they value their community too much to move up. So many great people miss that chance for one reason or another, and the spots get filled in with miserable people who only care about lining their own pockets. No wonder our government is so screwed up at the higher levels.
I think we can do with more folks like Ron Swanson in government.

Doesn't mean they are bad.
But as a politician you strive to get the power you need to do what you think is right.
This could be genuinely good things, but to be in power means you need to compromise with a lot of ideals to at least something done.
I can only imagine it being a pretty crushing experience for someone with genuinely good ambitions.
High level of power also comes with alienation from the voter base.
It is easier to have a blind eye for the consequences of what you do when you are that disconnected from the people.
There are so many reasons why democracy is so much more than just voting once every 4 years for a specific office or parliament.
