Some here criticized SEALs for writing books about their careers in the Navy. Who would you rather hear it from HOLLYWOOD or the men who actually went through the training and fought and died in the wars. I recommend reading the book FEARLESS. It writing about Navy Seal Adam Brown who fought a drug addiction, joined the Navy, became a Seal, and gave his life fighting terrorism.
You obviously aren’t familiar with their Creed. “I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions” that was back when it really was the silent profession. Now it’s monetized and they go on Joe Rogan. I’m torn because my brother was a SEAL, Class 244 SDVTEAM 1 and never wrote about it.
@@RizztrainingOrder True but the intentions of Seals doesn't change once you leave. You will always want to help others and grow stronger and for many expressing what the experience is like and coaching civilians is how they do that and writing books is part of that. Petrol-Dollar They’re not in the military anymore. Besides that creed is pushed by the big navy. Sure whoring out the trident is stupid but there’s plenty of guys who go public that don’t do that. And Jack Carr doesn’t write about his career he writes fiction I think.
As someone who went to school for journalism and creative writing, I respect this man's chosen path. Not everyone needs to go to school and he has a clear passion. I'd love to check out the book.
The thing is, it’s actually pretty difficult to actually teach “creative” writing. Because traditional education and instruction is by its very nature somewhat rigid, it’s somewhat contradictory to try and teach someone to be creative. You either have imagination or you don’t.
@@Garrus1995 It's a steady mix honestly. There is TONS of structure in writing (or better yet, in "story.") That's all stuff you need to learn. Character arcs, 3 act structure, scenes and sequels, stuff like that. Most "pantsers" nowadays write books that have no purpose or good character arcs, whereas "plotters" tend to have the opposite problem (not enough good writing, prose, and dialogue). The hard part is finding the perfect balance between the two, which is difficult because it requires using both the Left and Right brain, which most people are NOT good at doing. Typically they excell heavily in one or the other. But I hear you. Everything I've described above I've learned on my own. Spent maybe a couple grand at most on dozens of books, and several courses and a couple writing coaches. You definitely don't need a degree at all.
@@Garrus1995 I mean, typically creative writing courses and associated areas of studying are there in an effort to give you a base level of knowledge. You can't really become a creative writer or a writer in general without a base level of knowledge. Jack Carr highlights that here when he says he was always a reader at a young age coupled with the desire to be a writer so I'm sure that helped him continue the passion of reading but also learning from other authors. So yes, it's difficult to teach, but having the base is extremely important.
I love Jack Carr's books; all 3 (The Terminal List, True Believer, and Savage Son) are exceptional. I discovered him through a respectful nod from one of Brad Thor's books, where he mentions Mr. Carr actually in the story...and I was curious and checked it out; Mr. Carr has also returned the favor in his books as well; love the mutual respect there.....as they are both some of the absolute best writers in this genre. Mr. Carr's style keeps the stories intelligent, with entertaining action...but perfectly balanced. Some authors tend to focus either too much on story and you get bored, or too much on action and then it feels like unrealistic BS. But Jack Carr doesn't do that. You will appreciate both the narrative and the action, again with the balance being so perfect you never feel let-down. If you haven't already, pick up his series...you will NOT be disappointed.

I'm halfway through The Terminal List. You can tell it's the first book in a series. Overall it's impressive. Can't wait to see what happens further on in the book. Well done, Mr Carr.
I read The Devil’s Hand after watching the first Season of the show on Prime. Loved it, burned through the first book in a few days and the second book, True Believer I read 350 pages in one day. I could read a whole boo, just on the hunting camp in Moz. Might check out the book mentioned IN the book, Three Sips of Gin about the Selous Scouts. Lots of great info about geopolitics in these reads.

Getting out of the military with a medical discharge took so damn long. It could be done in a week, and even a day if you remove the useless crap. So many people think they are way more important than they are, they all want to be the last you see because they think they are that important to day to day operations. So you sit around waiting for someone to make time for you, then you. Takes way longer than it needs to be. Then its all rushing to here, there, and everywhere on the last couple days because of all those people who demand to be last but aren't there when you need them.
I ended up having to extend my time in the military by almost a year and a half to get a medical discharge. A big reason was because where I was, was this small little regular army posting on this vacant National Guard base that had nothing really on it. So I would have to drive 2-3 hours to get to another base where I could do a lot of paper work. Then I would have to fly from central Cali up to Fort Lewis in Washington for medical stuff.
He should try and see if Jason Everman would come one. Dude played with both Nirvana and Soundgarden but left both before they took off. He joined the Army in his late twenties, became a Ranger first and then a Green Beret. Then after leaving the Army, he got a degree at Columbia University. I’d love to hear the guy interviewed at length.
Navy seals do tell their stories. Especially to wives. They are ultimately human. When service time is done, they are civilian again with exception training.

You saying that, having worked with multiple, is kinda weird.
