I'm trying to get you hyped to read these books and then nerd out with me, so I wanted to throw up a video that reminds you to keep it simple and think in high level terms about the groups of people and not get all bogged down in the minutiae at first...!
Thank you for this. I'm listening on audible for the 1st time. Just finished Gates and I'm going to listen to your series and go back and listen again. Great video for a great book! The more books you can do for this series the more you help we dummies of nerddom such as myself. Again many thanks!
I finished Gardens of the Moon not too long ago and started Dead House Gates recently. I'm a few chapters in and feel like I need to review GotM and the world a little bit. I like being along for the ride and not entirely understanding everything which is why a friend suggested these books! Thanks a bunch for making this content!
Like a lot of others, I needed this. Just got to Darujhistan and I was so lost. The cards, the coin, new names that are around for a paragraph or so…you put me at ease.
I just started that's where I'm at right now. I started getting a little comfortable with everyone then it introduced a ton of other characters , running on a roof top then someone was having a conversation with a raven or a bird I think and I was totally lost. Also in that battle I thought the moon someone was a person they were fighting had no idea it was a floating city. It seems like a great story so far it's definitely interesting so I'm going to keep listening.
Another faction worth mentioning would be the Moranth. Or the named Gods, like Hood, Oponn, Shadowthrone, Cotillon, K'rul. Or maybe even Raest. But thanks for bringing more Malazan content to RUclips
Nice breakdown of the dramatis personae, i feel like Gardens of the moon can be pretty jarring when first getting into Malazan, the amount of characters introduced in the first 100 pages alone is pretty staggering. Favourite characters is a difficult one when it comes to Malazan, they are all so strong in their own ways. Itkovian will always be a stand out for me though, that one particular scene was the moment i knew for sure Malazan would forever be one of my favourite fantasy series even written.
💯!!! To me, ithkovian is probably the one person who can potentially represent/symbolize the entire series! Good call!! He’d be a good character to do a deep dive on too.
******SPOILERS******** And right after *THAT* moment, when Toc and Onos don’t recognize each other... that gutted me... shows this isn’t your typical story!
@@IskarJarak for sure! Malazan has some of the best friendships in fantasy in my opinion, despite how tragic a lot of them are. Both the world and story are very nihilistic, which in turn makes the more human moments stand out more distinctly.
Oh god, glad I found this. Tried to get through Gardens twice, always put it down. Friends keep telling me I should stick with it because it's exactly what I love (big epic events, politics, magic) only on steroids. RUclips is full of Game of Thrones or Wheel of Time channels but Malazan sources are scarce. Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you! I agree with your friends-stick with it! Malazan channels are pretty scarce, but if you like those books (and I graduated from those ones myself and loved em), then you should enjoy Malazan too! Appreciate the sub and look forward to hearing how you get on!!

Just finished Deadhouse Gates on my first readthrough. Burned through the first 2 books the last couple weeks. These videos were my most helpful resource, especially with GotM to keep myself grounded in the big picture stuff and move things along. Loved both books. Deadhouse Gates has perhaps my favorite storyarc I have seen in a long time.
Glad I found your channel. Malazan is what I chose as my first dive into the fantasy genre and exactly 100 pages in to GotM, I'm really happy I ignored everyone telling me not to start with Malazan. It's freaking awesome so far and I look forward to nerding out with you as I progress and learn more!!
Awesome video! I just began my Malazan journey last month and I’m so excited to finally be on this ride. I’ve finished Gardens of the Moon and am a couple of hundred pages into DHG and I’m just floored by what Erikson is doing with this series so far. I have a feeling I’ll be hanging out a lot on your channel for the coming months!
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm trying for the fourth time to make it through the main series, Midnight Tides is the farthest I've gotten in the past. Best epic fantasy series ever written! Just tucking into The God is Not Willing. Its been too long without some awesome Erikson! I may have to read them over again for the 3rd time...
All 10 plus the prequels and the karsa trilogy when it drops along with the jhistal later this year! I may even do bauchelain/korbal depending on how froggy I feel. I also have a lot of theories, character pieces, Warren breakdowns, etc that I’ll be mixing in along th way to break things up a bit!

This makes me more interested in the Malazan series. I've been looking for a series to fill the void that Wot left since I finished that. I tried to start Gardens of the moon a few times but always ended up setting it down. Your channel (and having a place to go for like minded content) make tackling malazan seem more possible. Let me finish towers of the sunset and I'll give it another shot.
That’s my hope! Having some chapter by chapter videos and some spoiler free discussions as well as the discord and comments to get help when needed, people are going to feel like the hype for it being too hard was overdone. It’s just different, but better for it!
Thanks!! I plan to watch these videos in prep for Memories of Ice. It helps to refresh my mind on what happened in Gardens of the Moon. Hoping to start MoI on Sunday or Monday.
I’ve just reached chapter two and I’m watching each of these chapters as I finish them! I already know Malazan is going to be my favourite thing of all time
Another cool video. As someone who hasn't read the books, I'll definetely come back to this when I start Gardens. One recommendation would be to include even more graphics. Visual aid for memorizing is helpful, the pictures of the characters do a good job there. It seems like including additional pictures that give a broader overview, such as combining all people in one group, portraying all the groups at once ect would be great additions.
Thank you very much! I definitely appreciate the feedback. I need to do some research on how to use other people’s art. I don’t want to get in trouble with RUclips and haven’t looked into the rules but I definitely want to showcase more of the art that’s out there to highlight what I’m talking about. Great content man, only found your channel recently which is great as most book tubers seem not to have finished this series (my favourite of all time). Trying to get back into Gardens of the Moon on my third try and these guides are great. Thank you. One piece of feedback which you e probably heard is the positioning of your mic. It’s kind of in your crotchal region and once you see it it’s hard to unsee. Thank you again!
I I just finished this and just did a review for it yesterday... But yes, the characters! There was sooo many - too many, I found so many characters introduced into Gardens of the moon that I couldn't keep track of them.. and because of this, none of them were very developed.
Stormy, Gesler, Greymane, Lostara Yil, Sorry, Kalam, Quick Ben, Ganoes Paran, Tavore Paran, Tarr, Hedge, Bottle... so many factions as well; Bridgeburners, the Claw, the Talon, Caladan Brood, Tiste Andii, the Mage assassin cabal, the Soletaken, the Darujhistan group... I mean, it's so memorable. It's hard to find another book series that rivals the amount of characters.
Great desiccation of the main characters and what it will eventually lead to the development of other key players as the saga progresses and to the convergence of the books and culmination of the story. My guess as I'm only on the fourth book of this amazing, mind bending saga so pardon my trespass. I can't wait to finish it (House of chains) and kinda preparing for number five.
That’s awesome. Things definitely come together, and even though you don’t get ALL the answers, you definitely see the threads come together and get some closure. Thanks so much for watching and enjoy the read!!
Thanks for this! I'm stuck in chapter 3 of GotM (~20% according to Kindle) and I'm just searching for some motivation around the internet to not drop it. I've heard so much about the books and even after reading the entire WoT series in English, which is not my native language, I am still having a bad time with the sheer amount of characters, places and other unknown terms lol
I have to agree with your opinion on the Phoenix Inn. I love some of those characters already and I just started reading Gardens of the Moon for the first time. (I'm at the part where Kruppe takes the wax coin to the alchemist)
That is such a fun setting and all the plot and friendships that happen/start from there make it a personal favorite! Enjoy GotM-you’re at the part where things start to heat up!! Thanks for watching and glad you found me! 💪🙏
I am currently reading GotM in English (which is not my native tounge) and find the language really hard to process at some points. That makes it more difficult to juggle all the characters and hidden messages overall. However, your video helped me to get a better perspective. At the moment I still dwelve in Pale but now that you helped me out a little bit I really start do dig into it. Is there something spolerfree about the characters like Shadowthrone and Hood etc., too?
@@IskarJarak I see. Thank you. I am excited how the story will progress, I really enjoy it so far. What I didn'T comprehend was why the Bridgeburners in Pale went through so many captains and gave Paran such a short life expectancy. I understood it that way that they were unhappy with the Officers that were sent by the Empire and somehow "murdered" them or let them run into "open knives" during missions?
This was incredibly helpful! This is a subscribe for me. Looking at your channel, it looks like you have videos like these up until Memories of Ice. Do you plan to continue these?
Where did you get your pictures from particularly the last video that was an overview of the Malazan world? In particular the sketchings of the races defined through notable characters and the magic system? Thanks Great content btw!
By any chance did you get into any of the Facebook read along put up by Elliot Brooks? Also great little over view, some of the topics it would be so easy to do a whole video on.
I did not. Thank you for the heads up, will definitely see if I can find that. Apparently there’s a very active Malazan reddit too, I’ve just never got into reddit yet. Dunno if I’m too old or what but appreciate the tip!!
TL;DR Kruppe is pronounced Cropper in the audiobooks incase you're listening for the 1st time. For anyone listening to the audiobooks for the 1st time; the narrator pronounces Kruppe as Croppa/Kroppah/Cropper. The voice he uses for Kruppe is VERY distinct. Just wanted to throw that out there b/c I have only listened to the audio and when I went to look up Kruppe it took a little while cause the spelling is so different to the way its pronounced. I have only listened to the 1st book Gardens of the Moon so far so I have no idea if the narrator is consistent with how he pronounces the name throughout the series; I assume it's the same only b/c it's the same narrator... this post really got away from me apologies...
Thanks for the heads up and for watching the video. I’m going to take a look and see if I can change it out without taking down the video. Much appreciated!
crazy, how the audiobook listeners actually know how to say names like "croppa" or croope, but dont know how to spell anything.... anyways its said croppa
Was trying to look up the key players after the 2nd chapter in book 1 through names on Google and couldn't. The audiobook narration is pretty good though. 🤣🤣🤣
I recently finished Gardens of the Moon and I am looking for a sort of refresher before Deadhouse Gates. I want to watch these videos but my worry is future things will be spoiled. Does anyone know who has watched these videos if that is the case? Thanks!
I have a non spoiler summary of the chapters covered at the beginning and then I tell the newbies when to leave and discuss spoilers related to those chapters during the second half of each video.
[Sorry in advance for the long comment/question] Something you said confused me. I know with this video being over a yr old you might not read it but still I gotta ask: Why wouldn't people count Esselmont's books as part of the series? I'm genuinely asking (I know the internet can be a snarky place lol). I am brand new to the series; I am listening to the books on Audible and I am halfway through (just started "Book 4" ) Gardens of the Moon. Funny enough I had no idea about Esselmont's books until you mentioned them and that of course lead me down a rabbit hole. I unfortunately was hit with a spoiler with one of my first few Google searches but, luckily, it was the only spoiler that hit me. It was impossible to miss unfortunately (it was about Anamonder Rake- I know I am probably butchering the spelling). So, anyways, now I am wondering if I should hop to the prequels after finishing GotM or just continue on with Deadhouse gates. I think I will just continue on with the order of publication as far as Erikson's entries go. The only reason I wouldn't is because of the article on TorForgeBlog where Esslemont and Erikson both suggest reading the books in a certain order (with Esselmont's prequels first). Having said that, I want to read Erikson's books first because I ask myself "why break up a good thing?" and have no compelling reason. His writing is, simply put, AMAZING. He's the first author who I feel comes truly close to GRRM as far as spinning a ton of intrigue and mystery into his story. Also, I want to preface the following observation with the fact that I know, at least with gaming, people all the time compare action RPG's with any sort of difficulty to Dark Souls when they aren't even close to being similar past he category of game. Having said that, as far as books go, this is the ONLY fantasy book that truly gives me a Dark Souls vibe to it. Not even Glen Cook's Black Company books did that for me. Needles to say, I LOVE Dark souls and thus, I am LOVING GotM. Well, this "comment" has gone on far too long lol. Sorry about that. I appreciate the playlist you've made for the books and will try to follow along as I progress through the story. One more thing before I go: I have mentioned getting hit with a spoiler thanks to Google and would like to avoid any more spoilers. Do your videos contain any spoilers like the one I mentioned? I love the accompanying artwork in the vids btw. Nice touch! Thanks for the response AND, even if you aren't able to respond, I'd still like to say thanks for the excellent videos!
I think there’s a good argument to make on both sides. For me, keeping with the same tone and author worked really well, but I could also see going more chronologically or in publication order because there’s a lot of overlap with the various plots. You really can’t go wrong either way, but I think that’s the choice: consistency of tone/style vs. consistency of plot timeline.
@@IskarJarak TY for the reply! You said exactly what I was thinking, as far as how I justified my position in my head. I really love Erikson's writing style and I don't want to mess that up. Good to know that I'll be fine sticking with his stuff first. Again, thanks so much!
I just turned to the end of my copy of Gardens of the Moon and it says "now read the complete book - available from Bantam". Does that mean what I have isn't the complete novel? Thank f*** I didn't read the entire thing first
Erikson in his interviews explains how to pronounce some of his names. He also states the audio narrators never consulted him in pronunciation. He says ‘Kroup’
Great books but some of the characters and waffling plot lines are just pointless. Heboric and his dumb jade fever dreams. Chapters of it. Then his arc if flipped off like a light switch. Obscure quick end leaving 0 effect on any of the other players or story.

Found this in a huge box of donated books. Now I want them all
How come you stopped?
Thanks for this! I'm stuck in chapter 3 of GotM (~20% according to Kindle) and I'm just searching for some motivation around the internet to not drop it. I've heard so much about the books and even after reading the entire WoT series in English, which is not my native language, I am still having a bad time with the sheer amount of characters, places and other unknown terms lol
It gets good, stick with it!! By mid point, you’ll feel like you’re getting to know everyone slowly!
Hey, great video! What are those books on your shelf underneath The Wheel of time paparebacks? The red books and the two large black books please
I haven’t done something like that yet, but don’t worry-the gods are always a bit mysterious!
Pretty much. They have a very anti authority attitude so they tend to be hard on new officers.
Kruppe is also totally bald in my mental image - only seems right!
I’m on my 3rd try, and determined to finish it this time around….with your help I just might 🙏😊
Had a kid just after deadhouse need a recap before memories.
This was incredibly helpful! This is a subscribe for me. Looking at your channel, it looks like you have videos like these up until Memories of Ice. Do you plan to continue these?
It’s a long slog, but we’re making our way through slowly but surely. Hoping I can finish up by end 2022 realistically.
@@IskarJarak You rock!
One thing I am not getting starting the series now Is why the Tiste Andii are opposing the Malazan Empire
They were the only ones around willing to stand up to the imperialism and global domination.
what the hell was that damn crazy puppet
why are those books in the background blurred out?
Didn't mention Tattersail or Sorry for some reason
good vid
Thank you for checking it out!
Where did you get your pictures from particularly the last video that was an overview of the Malazan world? In particular the sketchings of the races defined through notable characters and the magic system? Thanks
Great content btw!
Thanks so much for the positive feedback and glad you are enjoying the videos. Those all came from the Malazan wiki!
@@IskarJarak ok i'll have to hunt t hem down on there as I've not come across them.

Awesome, thank you!!
I understood like 50% of that book
Toc the Younger is my bae.
He’s definitely a favorite of mine too
Did you made a playlist like this for the rest of the books
Still working through book 3, but that’s the plan!
@@IskarJarak can't wait! Just finished GotM, I'm watching these videos to properly understand wtf I just read, thank you.
Hey, enjoyed the video! Just wanted to say that your image of Kruppe has a pretty big spoiler, so would recommend changing it, if that's possible.
Thanks for the heads up and for watching the video. I’m going to take a look and see if I can change it out without taking down the video. Much appreciated!
Ya, that’s my bad... just double checked. I’ll try to fix. Thx again!!
I was able to blur it out using the RUclips studio-thanks again for bringing that to my attention!!
crazy, how the audiobook listeners actually know how to say names like "croppa" or croope, but dont know how to spell anything.... anyways its said croppa
Thank you!! I know my pronunciations bug a lot of people. Appreciate the feedback!!
Was trying to look up the key players after the 2nd chapter in book 1 through names on Google and couldn't. The audiobook narration is pretty good though. 🤣🤣🤣
Tattersail is a mage too right?
Indeed! ‘Captain ‘of the Mage Cadre on Genabackis!
[Sorry in advance for the long comment/question]
Something you said confused me.
You bet. Enjoy!
When I read it, I always imagined Kruppe looked like the fat version of Majin Boo 😂 was I the only one??
I just turned to the end of my copy of Gardens of the Moon and it says "now read the complete book - available from Bantam". Does that mean what I have isn't the complete novel? Thank f*** I didn't read the entire thing first
No idea? Maybe they’re referring to the other 9 books that comprise the complete book of the fallen? How many pages is your GotM?
@@IskarJarak around 720 pages if I remember rightly?
Is this video spoiler free apart from GotM ?
It is
Missed Tattersail.
Kruppe is pronounced Kra-pah in the audiobook
Thank you
weird, i would never have guessed that
Me either and I can’t stop saying kroop in my head... like group with a K... gah!!!
Erikson in his interviews explains how to pronounce some of his names. He also states the audio narrators never consulted him in pronunciation. He says ‘Kroup’
You totally forgot Sorry!!!
Excuse me... "Kroop"? XD You mean "Krahpa".
My bad... but se said the audiobooks aren’t right either because they never consulted him. Either way, sorry!!
This happens all the time. Readers pronounce one way, listeners hear it another way. It's a fantasy world. There is no correct way.
It’s pronounced “Kruppa” the “e” is an “a” sound 😉
Really interesting video but stop pronouncing it Jenabackis, it starts with a G, so like the G at the beginning of gay, Genabackis
My pronunciations are canon…
@@IskarJarak :')
Great books but some of the characters and waffling plot lines are just pointless. Heboric and his dumb jade fever dreams. Chapters of it. Then his arc if flipped off like a light switch. Obscure quick end leaving 0 effect on any of the other players or story.
Such a poorly written book! Thanks for the info.
I'm late to this, but started Malazan with the new year and your video guides will be helpful as I read along! Thank you Iskar! Happy New Year!
