  • It’s been more than one year since we gave up our apartment, sold most of our things and set off on a journey to travel full-time for the entire year of 2022. With just a carry-on bag and lots of enthusiasm, we’ve learned an incredible amount about the art of minimalist traveling and traveling in general.
Here are 22 of the most valuable travel lessons we’ve learned during our travels this year.

Never say never, you never know what happens once the grandchildren start to spread their wings! ☺️ My grandmother never wanted to travel anywhere, but when I went to the US for a year as an AuPair, she hopped on a long-distance flight (flying for the first time in her life) to come see me. And also my mom joined us for one month here in Brazil this year and traveled carry-on only too. At first she was hesitant, but we „threatened“ her that we will not help her carry her heavy luggage on the islands without roads and that she will have a hard time hauling it through the sand… 😂 and actually she did very well and I think she prefers traveling this way now too. 😂 I am happy to hear that you like my content! 🤗

Love the safety pins trick! My grandmother always told me about travelling with them too. She mostly used them so that she could pin her underwear to dry overnight, she would pin them to the curtains!

I really like carrying “line” (paracord, microcord, etc) for 1) multiuse 2) passing time (knots, crafts. ), 3) safety (reflective type). It also the idea of “5c’s of survival “.

Sunscreen, hell yeah. I'm a ginger, it takes me about 20 mins to burn if it's a strong sun and I don't have sunscreen. I can burn even if there are pretty thick clouds - I neglected it a couple times and learned the hard way. Near water, I burn twice as fast. And I will burn every body part that happens to be mildly perpendicular to the sunrays.
I hate sunscreen in my hair, so I have two tricks:
    - my preferred option is wide brim hat. That covers my hairline, ears, face and my neck. If the sun is really high and I'm not near water, I sometimes skip sunscreen on my face or apply less.
    - you can comb hair backwards and make a high ponyfail or a braid. With no hair split, there's no skin to burn!
Some hats have ponytail hole, so you can actually do no-hairline ponytail and take off hat for photos and what not, those two really work well together.
There are awesome stick/solid sunscreen options now, and sunscreen is one of the cosmetics I have to take with me and won't buy locally. In many countries, it's hard to find SPF50, sometimes even SPF30 is a problem.
Korean sunscreens (I tried three) seem to work a lot better for me and European or American ones (I tried tens of them). They are nicer products, have nicer smells or none at all, better texture and in my experience at least, they work a lot better.
Mineral sunscreen for the win, but any sunscreen is a win.
I also can't wear sandals because I burn top of my feet and it's just a nuisance to put sunscreen on feet when it's hot etc, sandal straps get greasy and it's meh.
I don't wear tank tops or cami-style tops during the day, because then I have more exposure to the sun. I am considering buying long sleeve high UPV hoodie to test it out. But for now, I have my trusted slightly longer sleeve tshirts so I'm gonna murder them first.
I also stay away from shorts, cause, you guessed it right, I'll burn back of my calf and/or front of my thigh. Mid calf trousers are okay. I usually have a tank top and shorts with me though. Shorts are triple function - I can wear them after 6pm, use them as swim shorts and as pyjama shorts, while tank top is pyjama and also an after-6pm outdoor garment.
I mean, I could wear tank top and shortest shorts and sandals during the day, but I'll go through 100ml of sunscreen in 3 days and have greasy/messy sandals.
On the upside, I'm so pale that I think I'm slightly fluorescent at night so easy to see on the road!

Awesome tips! Every single one. I was thinking re trips and perfect packing... each one is different and so it is always a little bit of a guessing game. I think that is what makes it hard to pack perfectly, BUT that is also what makes the packing part so fun too! I find it is also a kind of anticipation enjoyment... sort of enjoying the trip that much extra as you imagine it (while packing for it) ahead of time 😂

So true! That rule came in handy again after Everson had his medical emergency in Brazil and we stayed overnight in the first hospital. Your comments about the rudeness of tourists when they are amidst locals in their homes (parties/noise at 3 am) made me think about my own home situation. We had an AirBnB start up behind our home. It was awful. Night after night party, party, party. No respect for locals. We sold our home and moved. I refuse to use AirBnB anymore.

    • @MaggiFuchs
      @MaggiFuchs  Год назад +1

Sounds awful and similar to my experience. I lived in a skiing town for a few years and since they are selling out our country, most of the houses/apartments are vacation homes and Airbnbs. Lots of people doing Apres Ski and parties every day of the week until the early morning, even during the week. I found it unbearable too…

Funny how peoples traveling styles are different. 🤗 For me, those exact three items are my must haves. I always destroy things or have blisters, so I use the sewing kit regularly. I travel with some tape to secure lids on bottles to keep them from leaking or close things like chips packages. And I use my flashlight every night in the room. 😅 So in my opinion, they are very good exceptions. 😂
