    Excellent illustrative video, thank you. This is why a 4K display may not necessarily be the better choice over 2K and it depends on various factors which in no small part includes visual acuity. Until I hit my mid 40s, I would always purchase the highest display resolution option available for my laptops. Great eyesight meant that the smaller font trade off for increased screen real estate with higher resolutions was no problem.
    These days, I pick the display with the most easily read font size at native resolution. Scaling has improved tremendously in the last decade, but a monitor used at native resolution still provides optimal crispness in all use scenarios. Which means that for my 13” ultrabook, 4K is a no no.

    I have been looking for optimum screen sizes and resolution. The optimum distance is about 70-90 cm so you need about 90-108 ppi which means 27" or 32" 1440p. For 4k, 40" is optimum. I know it feels so good to have a 4k monitor, it is a lot sharper but it is like always eating candies and at some point you just want regular home made cooking.
    PS: I understand the idea behind scaling (sometimes you just need 4k at 100%) but I don't like scaling. My brother whose eyesight is really good, is using 23,8" 1440p at 125 or 150% scaling (he can see fish in the river from far away). Also for competitive gaming 1080p or 2k is the sweet spot.

    Almost everyone who comes into our store wants a 4k monitor....for sharper images and ' NOT ' for putting more items on the screen. Strange eh?
    I used to take random surveys with customers and most people only chose 4k for better image quality and nothing else.

      Yeah very odd, because the sharpness is from the quality of the screen dpi, not just the 4k

    Thanks for the useful video that helped me choose the right specs for a new monitor. I had done some calculations about how different screen sizes and pixel densities would compare, but seeing this side by side demonstration helped!
    I wanted to replace my 27" 2560x1440 monitor and it was tricky to work out how different monitors would compare in terms of how much more stuff would actually fit on the screen if I wanted text to be the same size as my current monitor. I ended up with a Dell 40" 5120x2160 with scaling set to 125%, which gave roughly the same text size but with more pixels per inch for sharper text and images.

      by 2k - you mean 1440p correct?

  • @PendelSteven
    @PendelSteven Год назад +3

    Fun fact: the recommended 150 % makes the resolution like 2560 x 1440 - in other words, a 1440p display.
    The 125 % makes it like 3072 x 1728. And that's more than a 1440p. You can't buy a 1728p display anyhow. But on this 32" that is about 110 dpi.
    But indeed, 150 % scaling ona 4K? Then just buy a 1440p. That is unless you need 4K images or video or something.

    Great video. What I was looking for. I have a question please: by scaling a 4k monitor on Windows, have you noticed any software not managing the scaling well or font getting blurry? Also, I'm not sure whether to buy a 32" 4k, or a 34" 2k ultrawide. What do you think? p.s. I don't play video games. I hope you can reply. Thank you man!

    • @MaxRiley
      @MaxRiley 3 года назад +7

      @@jinc2461 Hi, I bought both and immediately decided to keep the 32" 4K and return the 21:9 as the latter is too large and not tall enough. Yes, the text is too small at 4K with scaling 100%, and I have set the windows scaling at 150% which makes it just great. If you have good sight also scaling at 125% is ok and you will have plenty of room on your desktop. the 32" 4K is bigger and is sharper, also a better form factor. I hope it helps.

    Great video! I currently run an old 24" Asus ProArt @ 1920x1200 with a windows 125% scaling. I am planning to get a 27" 4k, can't go 32" cause of the space, but want 4k HDR. Do you think I can manage a similar windows scaling on the 4k even like at a higher 200% or so?

    I think a lot about if I should go for 1440 or 2160. But I think I'm going for 2 monitors with 27 inch. It's a hard decision. If I go with 1440 it will be a lot cheaper but I'm afraid I will regret that I didn't go with the 4K.
    This is why videos like this is super good. So thanks again. I will probably go with 4K, maybe even 32 or 34 inch. If I can fit them on my desk...lol.
