I'm 50 years old, and it still amazes me to watch these games from the 80's and 90s and comparing them to now. It's almost a completely different sport
Players were generally less athletic, but the sport was so much more interesting to watch. QBs were about 20% important to winning, not 50-60% like today. If you don’t have one now, you’re sunk from Week 1.
This game has a special place in my heart. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of either of these teams, our family gift a few days earlier was our new VCR!! Hence, this was the first game I recorded!! Watched it over and over about 20 times or so.
This is wonderful thank you!! The sarcasm of Bob Costas !! Very different vibe than Brent Musberger!! Love the 80s ads!! Olsen and Enberg were wonderful!! Pete Axthelm was kind of a different character!! Great video thank you!!
Big props to you, man! Your videos are crystal clear for being from the '80s-way better than most stuff on the tube. Keep those classic Bronco vids coming!
This may sound crazy but I've watched every Bronco game either live or on tv since 1977 and this was the only time I ever cried after a loss. Marino and the Dolphins were getting all the love from the country and someone in Miami had a sign that read, "Denver, Come on down" the day before vs Seattle. God, I just wanted a shot at them with our opportunistic defense. Even with all the Superbowl losses (and there were 5 bad ones) this loss still haunts me.
I am a lifelong Cincinnati Bengals fan, so there is no bias in what I am about to say. Mile High Stadium had to be the most imposing stadium in the history of sports. I insisted on seeing it up close the one brief time I passed through Denver heading back east. Add Broncomania and it had to be the most intimidating place in the history of sports for a visiting team. It sure looked, sounded and felt that way on a TV screen. I don't think that it is a coincidence that the dominant NFL franchise now, Kansas City, is still playing in the stadium that it is synonymous with. No team--Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Washington, the Raiders, the Oilers/Titans, the Chargers--has been a force in the NFL since moving out of the stadium that it is synonymous with. Any memory of Mile High Stadium is great. Thank you for the great video.
Yeah....because this was probably the most talent-deprived he ever had(that actually made the playoffs). Chuck did show he could push the right buttons.
I will be watching these old school videos from my teenage days on Super bowl Sunday. Can't even tell you who's playing. I will take the USFL over today's nonsense.
You said it! Thanks to RUclips and the generous uploaders, this is the only kind of football I watch now for almost twelve years. 35, 40, and 50+ year old NFL, NCAA, and CFL Grey Cup games. I do it right, too. For the biggest games, I get myself a big sandwich from the delicatessen, a big bag of potato chips, and a couple of orange pops just like "Dr. Huxtable"
As a longtime fan, to this day I still can’t believe the Steelers won this game with Mark Malone at QB 😆. What a HUGE upset. Broncos fans must have been beside themselves.
The Broncos would need 2 years to get over this loss. They didn't make the playoffs in 1985.But were able to develop a resolve that led to "The drive" against Cleveland and a three out of four year Super Bowl run in the mid to late 80s.
@chrisuncleahmad789 I wouldn't have the 1984 Steelers in with the Steel Curtain Steelers. Their 1982 loss to the Chargers was the last hurrah for that group. 1983 was the transitional year, and 1984 was a new era with a lot of young players.
So what. The PITTSBURGH STEELERS were the greatest team in NFL history, before the 49ers of the 80s and the millennium New England Patriots. Every great team has an end, whenever that comes. Besides, the STEELERS ✨ also won in Houston in '89, and should've won the AFC Championship that year.
glad someone else pointed out, this wasn't Nolls last playoff victory. He beat the Oilers years later in a game few thought the Steelers could win. And its a testament to Nolls greatness that he had the Steelers in the AFC Championship game in 84 with a clown like Mark Malone at QB. Malone was terrible. He once had 6 tds against 19 ints in a single season. The week after this game against Denver he threw 3 pics against the Dolphins in the Championship game. Malone was easily Pittsburgh's worst QB of the 80's. Lastly, Noll had the Steelers in the playoffs with 3 different QB's after Bradshaw in the 80's (Stoudt, Malone, and Brister). And 2 of Nolls last 3 seasons as coach Pittsburgh had a winning record. People act as if Noll left Cowher (who was totally over-rated and had 3 losing seasons in a 6 year span) a terrible team that was in shambles when Noll retired. Nothing could be further from the truth. Noll is criminally under-rated historically speaking.
Interesting take on Noll. As you may be aware, Mike Tomlin is only 10 victories behind Noll in all-time wins as a Steelers head coach. Tomlin has never had a losing season since he took over in 2007. But he hasn't had any recent playoff success with his latest 1st round exit coming against the Ravens. How do you think Tomlin compares to Noll and Cowher ?
As a Steelers fan this just makes me miss the old man. The elder Rooney wouldn't have been ok with how the organization has settled into being alright with the mediocrity
Remember, this Steelers team gave the eventual Super Bowl champion 49ers their only loss of the season. If they could've gotten past the Dolphins in the AFC championship game (a 28-45 loss), who knows what would have transpired. They would have probably given us a better game than the blowout that was the 1985 SB. Oddly enough, the Dolphins would give the Chicago Bears their only loss of the next season.
The cbs pregame coverage and post game coverage just completely stomped nbc in the ratings. For years , nbc had it's so called computer called STATS To read report and set the odds And the spread for viewers. Meanwhile , c b s had a charismatic sports betting icon , jimmy , the greek. When nbc finally got the clue that nobody wants to hear a computer with zero charisma, They hired pete , Who was an improvement , but he's no jimmy. This hurt all the rest of the broadcast. And did not give Dick erbberg Merlin Olsen the proper exposure that Pat simmer. And john madden got. The talk was that even people whose team was AFC What's choosing cbs in the early sunday morning.
Chiefs fan. You can see the new school Offense Elway&Den brought in. Check dwns, dump.offs, and QB Flash running. Irony? My first game @Arrowhead Stadium. Dec1990, DeBerg&Chiefs BEAT Elway&Broncos. I was 13. Been HOOKED on KC Chiefs ever since

@ You are incorrect. Lambert played Week 12,13,14. Sat out Week 15, 16 and the Divisional Round vs Denver before playing in the AFC Title Game vs the Dolphins. He didn’t start but made some tackles and blitzed Marino once. The full game used to be on RUclips.
Yep. In the off season going into 85, Elway really bulked up and the then QB coach, Mike Shanahan convinced Elway to take something off his throws at times to make them more catchable.
Im not saying hes not a legend he is s total legend i think he is a 5x emmy.award winmer all i meant.was Pat Sumeral gets more love alot more than Dick i hang out. Alone i is that ok😮
Thanks for leaving the commercials and huge plus for me
Its funny cause I HATE commercials these days but I love these old ones.
Yes! It all adds to the nostalgia.
Saving $740 on a Chevy.... BIG savings. You gotta love it.
I'm 50 years old, and it still amazes me to watch these games from the 80's and 90s and comparing them to now. It's almost a completely different sport
When football wasn't played by liberals
Players were generally less athletic, but the sport was so much more interesting to watch. QBs were about 20% important to winning, not 50-60% like today. If you don’t have one now, you’re sunk from Week 1.
Yes and the gen zers compare stats. You can’t. Guys would not take sacks to protect stats or throw 2 yards on 3rd an 10
This game has a special place in my heart. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of either of these teams, our family gift a few days earlier was our new VCR!! Hence, this was the first game I recorded!! Watched it over and over about 20 times or so.
Steeler fan here, same feeling about this game as it too was the first game I ever taped.
Cool! 📼👍🏿
Cool story, Who would have though Elway would have took the broncos to 5 freakin superbowls
Cool story🔥
Oh, and my wife had a baby that week also.
I am loving the commercials, feel like i am traveling back in time to when i was in high school
I still hate the commercials!
Yes Shelby I agree Enberg and Olson were underated they were great
Enberg… oh my
Endberg under rated? Never! Who are you hanging out with? Once a legend, always a legend.
1984 was the start of the NFC dominance starting with San Fran beating the Dolphins, the NFC teams winning 13 straight Super Bowls.
This is wonderful thank you!! The sarcasm of Bob Costas !! Very different vibe than Brent Musberger!! Love the 80s ads!! Olsen and Enberg were wonderful!! Pete Axthelm was kind of a different character!! Great video thank you!!
Musberger > Costas
NBC had some great voices in football. Dick Enberg, Merlin Olsen, and Don Criqui ❤️
Don Criqui is the most underrated broadcaster of all time.

Miami would’ve crushed Denver like they did Pittsburgh.

Confessions of an orange crush
It's the '96 playoff loss to Jacksonville that haunts me. I was a little too young to remember this game.
Thanks for the commercials terrific
I remember this game. 40 years ago. When the NFL was great.
Now the nfl is trash 🗑.

The Steelers have
Broncos have
Screw Denver and their low level stadium. That, and the stupid thin air, that's what they had.
👎
Great write up, Tim!
Oh man .. I miss the old NFL
Me too
Even the 80s Steelers could pull off a playoff upset every now and then
Mark Malone beat John Elway at Mile High in the playoffs. Still crazy to believe.
I hated Denver and Elway as a kid (Browns Fan) but i have to admit I love their uniforms and especially the helmet and logo. Classic.
Thanks I like the Steelers
84 I felt was Chuck Nolls greatest coaching job ever
Agreed
Yeah....because this was probably the most talent-deprived he ever had(that actually made the playoffs). Chuck did show he could push the right buttons.
Great copy thank you
One of the sweetest playoff wins ever. Thats saying something considering the Steelers dominance in the 70s. Nobody gave us a chance against Denver.
Art Rooney.a mans man. His son Dan a great man. Very proud of the NFL for standing up for Dan and his legacy of diversity today.
I remember this I told classmates the Steelers would win😊

I love how NBC used NFL whatever year it was
Art Rooney was a fantastic person and owner❤
Steelers should’ve drafted Marino
This was when football was watchable.
Love those Bronco red and blue uniforms

Art Rooney interview on film makes this video priceless.
Had the Steelers drafted Marino, this game would be at Pittsburgh.
Best comment. Noll's biggest mistake ever
Dick Enberg! What a treat.
Great running game fantastic defense Chuck Noll football
NFL '84 is so 1984 with Costas' jokes and Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen
Master of bounce pass mark Malone

Denver never should have given up those uniforms and helmets.
The Steel Curtain era’s last moment of postseason glory
(Pittsburgh was a completely different team next time they made the playoffs)
Only a handful of players on that 1984 Steelers team, that were holdovers from the 1970s. Namely, Stallworth, Webster, Shell, Lambert, etc.
@chrisuncleahmad789 I wouldn't have the 1984 Steelers in with the Steel Curtain Steelers. Their 1982 loss to the Chargers was the last hurrah for that group. 1983 was the transitional year, and 1984 was a new era with a lot of young players.

This was far far AFTER the Steel Curtain. Terrible take.
Iron Mike Webster.
Played for my Chiefs his last Season
This was the season I became a football fan…this was was heartbreaking loss for the Broncos 😥
We would have had 4 more if they drafted Marino
Yep terrible error by Noll
No I'm not the Mark Hermann from Purdue but I used to tell kids at school I was and many believed me😂😂😂😊😂😂😊
2:36:33 A 30-yard bullet from Elway, zipped right in!
What a canon, Elways first pass.
Chiefs had more SB Titles than Broncos on this day.
40yrs later? Chiefs STILL has more SB Titles than Broncos.
Thanks Ref
Thanks for this do you have the 78 Pittsburgh Denver playoff
It’s blocked
No Chucks last was December of 89 against Houston at the astrodome
New Years Eve 1989
By today’s rules…Malone’s opening fumble would be reversed. His left knee was clearly on the ground before the ball squirted out. No reply then
Got yo love the car prices back then 😮😮😮❤❤😂
Man had the Broncos won it would've been Elway vs Marino in the AFC Championship game.
Real football

Lambert WAS NOT active vs the Dolphins
