Use humour as a tool, not a weapon | Karen Dunbar | TEDxGlasgow

  • Exploring her personal connection to humour and how it has not only formed the basis for her career but enabled her to make connections with others, Karen’s talk emphasises our need, as a society, for humour.
For many though, humour is a weapon, one to both protect themselves and, at times, attack others. In her early years, Karen used humour as an outlet for unresolved issues and often went too far in the quest for a laugh. When a former fan complained about the hurt her humour had caused, Karen was forced to rethink what she framed as ‘funny’.
When used for ill, humour can have devastating effects. But, when used widely, it can be a powerful tool for good. So before we crack that next joke, Karen will ask us to consider our motives and deliver more than the perfect one-liner. Born in Glasgow and brought up in Ayr, Karen Dunbar is one of Scotland’s best-known and loved comedy actors. Starting off her television career in the sketch show Chewin’ The Fat, she went on to star in four seasons of The Karen Dunbar Show, which received four Rose d’OR nominations, and, most recently, joined the infamous River City cast.
But television is just one string to her bow, Karen has repeatedly appeared in British theatres including London’s West End, the National Theatre, acted in Shakespeare plays, performed Burns poetry, done stand up comedy, recorded her own album and DJ-ed in New York and Australia.
For over 25 years she has charmed audiences with her comedy, music and acting talents and now she brings her unique style of storytelling to our TEDx stage. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I mind Karen when she was DJ’ing in Bennetts night club in Glasgow. She was at the start of her career and she was great! So sorry this happened, but I’m glad she learned. She was an essential part of my coming out! Loved her before, but I love her more after seeing this. X

Hugely impressive talk on being a whole and congruent human being that moved me to tears several times! I'd absolutely recommend it to all and in particular I'd hope for some, that anonymous moment of focus saves you too. I'm an admirer of Karen Dunbar the performer, the more I hear these powerful glimpses behind the veil; the more I'm glad to have the woman amongst us! 👏👏👏💐💐👍👍👍👍😍

Hey Karen. I met you at a few anonymous meetings a few years ago & thought you came across as a lovely person. It was around the time that you had your TV show. Your top table shares where down to earth & very helpful. I didn't realize how much you where struggling at the time because I was also struggling. After these restrictions are lifted I'll be heading back to those meetings. I hope to catch up again at some point. Until then K.I.S.S. :-)

I can totally relate..I think it's normal when a person is bullied and hurt to wanna 'rub peoples' noses in it' when they become successful..it's like revenge for their wounded inner child..that always topples you in the end as no one likes a tyrant..I'm now nurturing my compassion more..just learning how to stop people taking advantage of that tho😰

I believe it's totally up to the person whether if they want to use humour as a tool or a weapon!
Everyone uses humour as a weapon when they are upset about something, so why bother being all woke about it?

  • @paulcrawford5153

just watched your programme on tv... its quite shocking... but just within the bounds of what I consider acceptable humor... I thought some sketches were better than others.. they were like shocking but you didn't pinpoint anyone so badly... for instance when the woman who went to the supermarket and said 'how much did you pay for the baby' joke .. and told everyone there... that sketch was funny.. I know you get lonely people who try to relate to others like that...and I am not sure if you mean this type of humor in the talk above or whether you were on about some more obvious attacks using humor.... but for instance I think it is ok to laugh at most everything.... unless someone has suffered and it would offend relatives or something... but I do think that self deprication is healthier than the arrogance some people carry blindly with them in normal society and they should learn the humility of their position and their limitations.. Humor is perhaps a way of reminding them of this.
