  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Thousands of handmade pegs, 18 meter long poles, bare feet, and hundreds of hands. This is what it takes to make a house designed by Elora Hardy. She’s interested in changing the perception of luxury in relation to scarcity and abundance. Her tool? The super grass that is bamboo.
Raised in Ubud, Elora spent 14 years of her young adult life in the United States, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University and went on to become sole textile and print designer for Donna Karan Intl. In 2010, Elora returned to Bali to carry on the incredible work of the design-build team that created the world-renowned Green School in Bali, founded by her father John Hardy. She reconnected with the culture and landscape that she loves and today continues to cultivate Balinese artisans alongside innovative designers and architects with the goal of making Bali a global center for sustainable design and bringing those designs to the rest of the world.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I want one of these houses! And that bridge, it's so cool - I've never seen one that you walk inside, but there's something so cool about nature that I can't put my finger on. One of my dreams are to make houses around the world out of bamboo. The "Alice in Wonderland" style of these houses make me want to make slides the default way of going doing from one floor to another. Any maybe a manual Ferris wheel (finely balanced, probably) to go up. One day.... Thank you for imagining Elora. And I want to go to your dad's Green School! I'm a teacher by the way.

I've watched this talk a few times, I have a vested interest. I am going to build a bamboo house on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The Philippines seems to produce some of the biggest bamboo I've seen. This talk points out some of the difficulties of doing that. Finding an engineer or architect that has knowledge of building with bamboo (or who are even willing to do so) is difficult do. The closest that I've found are the locals that build bahay Kubo's and artisans that build bamboo furniture. And, lastly but by no means the least is finding the product to protect the bamboo from insects and fungus. Can you say frustrated??? Anyone out there that can point me to great sources for building with bamboo would be awesome. I've found some great stuff on You Tube but, just not enough.

    😊👍
    Excellent!
As an engineer, I can really appreciate the value of bamboo, and its ability to force architects away from their inevitable rectangular boxes.
The only drawback, is the limitation that climate would have on it. In a tropical or subtropical climate Bamboo buildings are superbly suited. In a northern cold temperate climate the challenge to produce a building that was warm and draft proof in a Northern winter would be extremely challenging, although Japan has succeeded with timber buildings, partly using Bamboo.

I'm curious what the cost difference is between her house and the concrete and steel version. That is what will make the decision for a lot of people.

What would have to be done to a bamboo building to make it able to handle harsh winters, since a LOT of the world is colder than the bamboo growing areas?

"just about everything that is built out of bamboo is gone"... this is quite far from being true. Were I grew up, in Colombia, we still have the houses of our grand grand grand parents, large two and three story houses, built out of "steel bamboo" collected from the region.
