As a slow non elite recreational runner, this is THE BEST, EASIEST TO UNDERSTAND AND MOST RELEVANT explanation I have heard about the differences between the Sky and Edge and how it would affect someone like me! All other reviews of the shoes explain it to me by assuming that I am an elite runner and as a result their explanation goes totally over my head. Thank you for bringing things to my level.
Finally!!! Great video Chris. Best one I’ve seen because it’s quite confusing. You spoke about them as an everyday runner which 95% of us are so good job 👍
Good, informative video. The whole way ASICS marketed these shoes confused me so much I decided to buy neither, and went for the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 instead. I absolutely love that shoe. It powered me to a 2min PB at the GNR the other day. In theory the Edge would’ve suited me better, but I’d saw numerous other RUclipsrs similar to me nearly all say the preferred the Sky, which only solidified my decision to buy neither I think ASICS should either make just one race shoe or make the differences between the two much more obvious, like Puma do with the Fast R & Deviate Nitro Elite, because I’m sure I’m not the only one who chose to avoid buying either entirely because of being confused by the whole stride versus cadence stuff.
Great video and many thanks for clearing this up. With running similar times to yourself I am glad I picked up the Sky for this year’s Berlin Marathon.
Finally it makes sense, the geometry working against you on slower paces due to plate position on edge, if I remember rightly the vaporfly has similar set up ( maybe not quite as aggressive) which would explain why that feels awesome at speed but jarring and harsh at slower paces
@@stevecolders you sound similar to me. I'm about 150-155 cadence, heel strike a touch due to overstride and have a slight over pronate. I tried both shoes on the road and sky is more stable, quicker and improved cadence. Sent the edge back
Three weeks ago I got my first 20 minute 5k (49 old and 22 months running) in the sky but sounds like I should have bought the edge for the faster paces/races. The Sky also wants me to go fast, I was really surprised by my really fast first mile at 6:20 mile pace/3:55 k pace. Traditionally I was a stride runner but the heal overstrike was causing bone growth in my tibia. End of spring I started training cadence from average 155 on long runs to now today going 177 without thinking about it, while fixing my over stride and getting an extra 22 steps a minute while keeping heart rate close to where it was before. I believe this helped me push my 20 minute 5k personal best.
Great way of describing the difference between the Edge and Sky. I went for the Sky as this has a softer forefoot than the Edge and therefore much more forgiving over the marathon distance for us non-elite runners. I have only done one 45min test run and they role nicer over the forefoot than both my original Vaporflys and original Alphflys! They work well for me at my marathon pace of between 5.50 and 5.30min per KM.
Well said Fordy! Cheers from across the pond. Cadence style runner and spot of I increase stride a tad as I speed up. Edge as you said for half and below and I use it the same way. It’s been a great 5/10k racer for me.
I think you were spot on with this. I have both and both are great shoes but the Edge is the faster shoe and the Sky is softer and better for longer distances.
Finally, someone has explained clearly which version (Sky vs. Edge) is best for different runners-thank you, Chris Ford, for breaking it down in a way everyday runners can understand! I really appreciate how you compared the two models’ ride, fit, and who they’re best suited for. It’s just a shame Asics can’t seem to keep size 44 in stock - and now the only one that’s popped up is pink... which is way too ugly for me!
I possess the Sky and will run my next marathon in November in. For the half 1 month before I’m hesitating with the Rebellion Pro which I also really like.
Great video…it clarifies what I’ve been thinking the differences are between these two shoes, at least for us as recreational runners! Thanks and regards from CR 🇨🇷#Puravida
this rings very true for me. I have the new sky and the old edge. did not like the sky for hitting a pb half pace. Where as my old edge are great up till 30k (which is where my legs gave out in my last marathon) my only caveat would be that these ate extreme shoes. you must practice in then a good amount. I did 4k over pace 4:15 ish in my magic speed 4. then next session was on pace 4:30 in rhe sky’s. my legs really hurt after the second session (just tired after first) I felt like the shoes were really firm and beat me up. though I did run the speed easily. so for me whatever the shoe or cost I think practise is imperative!
Great video & content and the detaill about both shoes very intresting also intesting about the gait anylist & decisions on the shoes with getting the hot spot with Edge and about the plates in the shoes I've got the Edge plan is use them for shorter distances not as a marathon shoe . I've been wating for this video to come very informative with the comparison of 2 shoes. Thanks for makeing it .
A 1:40ish 1/2 marathon in the sky's - a pb for me in my mid 50's. PB in my 10k 7:30 (can go under) pace have done a sub 20 minute 5k in them and sub 5 minute mile (bit of downhill help). However, I do enjoy adios pro 3 but the slope isn't as steep as the edge - the edge wanted me to run a certain way vs. just improving on what my "natural" gait is (the sky did that). Doing marathons next year and will do in the sky - however I've heard thesly don't last long (150+ miles) whereas as I have ran quite a bit in the pro 3's - well over 200 miles and still good. May have to try these again for shorter races but actually have run pretty quick 5k's in TSen 10's and there's no drop on those and the plate is not as steep as the edge so who knows?
Nice video! I ended buying the edge in the end! I traditionally haven’t been much of road running having mainly focused on trail and cross country since returning to running in 2017 and did an average of 1 maybe two road races a year! But last year I decided to go after my dad’s PBs bought a pair of the magic speed 2 (note I prefer a firmer shoe) for under £100 to dip toe with a plated shoe! The experience with the shoe was great and would tick all but the half marathon off the list! The the plate setup on magic speed 2 and the edge are similar! My only reference point is that I own a pair of Fujispeed2 and the plate setup is similar to the sky! But if feel the geometry on magic speed just seems to work for me! Even over marathon distances! So I decided to go all in and get a pair of top end racing shoes! I when with the edges from my experience with the magic speed! I would take off 6mins my half pb and would beat dads pb in my 1st race in them! Which was a bit of a surprise! my form wasn’t great going in the race! But shoes work great! I will try them over the marathon distance next year
Wow, it sounds like you've really found your stride with the Edge! It's amazing how the right shoe can make such a difference in performance. Best of luck with your marathon training!
Great video! I‘m struggling to decide which one to buy so this was quite useful but there‘s some things I‘d love to know to take more from your experience: 1. Are you a heel/midfoot or forefoot striker? 2. What‘s your exact cadence and how does it differ from Marathon to 5k? 3. Do you have a Strava account (so I can find out myself)?
I tried the edge and didn’t get on with it, I’m sure it caused me to injure my hamstring. I now have the sky and it feels great. My 5k pace is 4:30 m/km @ 59 years old so not super fast but the skys do make a noticeable difference.
Having never used an acics shoe I liked,I have finally figured out how the plate placement is the make or break for me..any shoe with a high plate position is a no go..if the plate position is low it might work..the foam softness or hardness as well as the drop are all tied together to make a good shoe for me or a brick which is the vast majority of all running shoes..
This time last year I watched a video you did on the Hoka Rocket X2 and bought those after not liking the Vaporfly 3 (I loved the 1 and 2). Absolutely loved the Rocket X2 and got PB at the GNR at the weekend (1:29:34). So thankyou! How do these compare to the Hoka Rocket X2? My next challenge is a marathon so sounds like the Sky is the option but are they better than the Rocket X2 and I am ready for some new shoes.
I can imagine the discussion in the Asics product development meeting "We can't decide where best to put the carbon plate" "Why don't we pop it in both places and convince everyone they need two pairs!!!" "Fantatsic that'll be great for our sales figures!". Great summary/review as ever I have the old Green Edge bought cheap in a sale and they feel very quick to run in but so very unforgiving.#sorefeet4PBs
Sounds like he wants to sell you $500 worth of shoes. A data point: Nick of the Run Testers, who is pretty quick, set PBs in both the marathon and the 5K in the Sky Paris.
This is only the case if you won't be running a hard marathon. It's not that cut and dry. I have both the Edge and Sky, I like them both, but I'm using the Edge for fall marathon... it feels a bit speedier.
Yeah it’s difficult ran big half in AF3 at marathon pace and did long run in sky paris, on following Saturday with 7 miles easy, 10miles at Marathon and 3mile park run at 1/2m pace cadence 176 avg and stride length 1.12 difference between 2 shoes, didn’t differ. Pacing was for a 3:45-3:40 Berlin marathon, but Manchester in April was ran at sub 3:30 in Vaporfly 3s with cadence 181avg, stride length 1.12 is consistent in terms of what I would expect at that pace and stride length for all 3 shoes at my marathon paces is 1.12 the same. So who knows I guess having the privilege of having 3 very good shoes to choose from it’s about how does the shoe make me feel and the sky Paris edges it for me, although with one more long to do in the AF3 before tapering for Berlin I may change my mind again. In conclusion I am with you for the elites trawling over the data the marginal gains can make a big impact, for me it really isn’t the shoe it’s down to more how well did my training go and for Manchester it was very good with a Coach, for Berlin the wheels fell off, minus a Coach and neither 3 shoes are gonna help me PB my Manchester time even if Berlin is one of the fastest and flattest marathons.
For some time now, I've been changing my running technique, landing on my forefoot. I don’t think I could (ever?) run a full marathon with that technique, but I find it helpful to alternate between sections landing on my forefoot and others on my midfoot to distribute the load across different muscles. The problem, though, is that with most of the plated shoes I've tried, the plate is too low in the forefoot, which makes landing on that part feel harder: it gives me less propulsion because there's less of a "trampoline effect" having the plate so low, and causes more strain on my calves. The only APPARENT exceptions seem to be the Nike Alphafly and the Meta Speed Sky, which both have some substantial cushioning below the plate at the forefoot, but I haven’t tried them. Do you think either of those could work for better for forefoot landing and alternating between forefoot and midfoot landing?
Nice Review👌. I still think they are geared for runners who are bio mechanically strong/efficient due to the narrowness of the midfoot/heel. Way less forgiving than other carbon racers.
Brilliant clear description. Thank you. Say you go for your 10k pb, would you choose the edge or another brand/model? Yes its a call for your best shoes advice per race distances. 5,10, half, mar.
I have watched many reviews of these shoes, and the perspectives are all over the place. The consensus, though, seems to be that the difference is slight and that you should go with how they feel for you. That does not help for people ordering online, but some help is that you can hardly go wrong: both appear to be top of the line and barely different.
After 3+ years of thinking stride vs. cadence was made up, since both do go up when you run faster, finally someone noting that of course they both do, but one might be way more. So made me look at my data and: Easy - 172 cadence/1.08m stride, Marathon - 174 cadence/1.26m stride, 5K - 180 cadence/1.45m stride... SO I'm a stride runner. Not sure what I'm doing with that info as I already have too many shoes, but good to know.
I have two questions: 1. Do you "feel" the plate in the Sky because there is less foam? 2. Do you feel the Edge softer and more comfortable because has more foam? Thanks.
Hopefully this will help someone decide between the two: I’m 5’10” and 165lbs and a fairly dominant forefoot striker; the heels of my shoes get almost no wear - my threshold pace is 4:00/km-ish and my 10K PB from earlier this year is 38:45. At easy pace my cadence is extremely low (165-170spm), at threshold my cadence is 175-180spm and at 5K pace it’s 180-185spm. My stride length is about 140cm at threshold. After testing both shoes I found virtually no difference in relative effort for a given pace, however, with the SKY it felt more like I was leveraging the properties of the foam for propulsion and with the EDGE I felt like I was using more of the geometry of the shoe.
I always thought these two were differentiated by the type of runner's strike zone, as in heel vs fore/mid foot, but this makes about as much sense, I suppose.
awesome, however since you are a more mid to forefoot runner how does this analysis workout for heal to midfoot runner/striker? clever boffins at Asics have complicated the art of running LOL. wont be buying though as LOVE my adios pro 3 over anything I have tried, they are super silent ninja shoes... love the comparison budd.
I do, just like everyone else, take both longer steps and have a higher cadence when I run faster. I also dont feel much difference between them. If anything the Edge feels like I thought the Sky would feel with the plate placement. Blindfolded I dont think I could tell which one is which. For reference my 10K PB is 35.40, I am a heel striker and I over stride. By the way where do you live with that accent? I have to listen very carefully to understand it.
@ƒordy I am a heel striker at most distances. Would you lean one way or the other. Based on the video I was thinking sky like you. I am a higher cadence runner.
Good vid on topic impossible to explain - most likely asics is confused itself lol I like asics shoes quite a bit but as for race im not even considering it cus it seems like id need to buy both to make my mind which one to choose 😅 ... better stick with something that works very well for me - adi pro 3
Cadence and stride go hand in hand for I'd say 99% of runners. I chose the Egde because it felt more like the Vaporfly 2, which i really liked and the reason why I went with the Edge. Never used the Sky so dont have any feedback there.
Bingo, to the 2nd half of that statement. The Edge's are a more comfortable, possibly slightly faster Vaporfly 2. The Vaporfly 2's were my fastest shoe but they give tons of reverberation in my lower legs that I do not feel in the Edge's.
@mrgq2000 ASICS published a scatterplot of their test data and I wish I could still find it of various test subjects cadences across a range of paces. Two distinct clusters. One with very little cadence increase across a 2 min/mile speed increase. Like literally 2 strides/minute. Others more like me with maybe 15+ more strides/minute. I remember long ago reading an article that said a higher proportion of elite runners have nearly the same stride rate at all paces, which is hard for me to fathom. I have a 5k PR of 14:56 and a 1:08 Half 20 years ago (I'm 54 now) and I don't get how one could have the same stride rate at 7:30/mile pace as 5:00/mile pace but many do apparently.
@@BigStar1972i am definitely not an elite runner but my cadence is basically the same at most paces (around 165). If I want to go faster, I just increase my stride length and to go slower - decrease it.
Asics: we created both shoe either for Cadence or Long Stride runner Runner: *buys both for different use (in a way boosting them sales) Asics: wait you shouldn't do that, as I say they're either for Cadence or Long Stride Runner (yep happens to one of my friend purchasing both of these in Japan, they're such a Geek lol I love Asics)
I feel that the Metaspeed Edge (Paris) is closer to the original Metaspeed Sky (Tokio). 5mm drop and a curved plate, so everyone who preferred that shoe over the Sky plus (flat plate) should go for the Metaspeed Edge (Paris).
The Metaspeeds are so much better than the AF3, I've got the AF3 and ended up with shin pain in my right leg with how firm the shoe is at the front with the pods. Metaspeeds are so light and responsive in comparison.
I wish ASICS would just make ONE racing shoe instead of this nonsense of two shoes for "different runners" no other company does this. Adidas makes the Pro 3 and that's it. One shoe to rule them all.
@@karls8989 the alpha fly is the same as the sky and the vapor is the same as the edge. Nike actually invented the idea of a shoe with a high plate and one with a low plate. They just market it the way Asics does.

Yeah half is prob sweet spot
Good morning. Interesting reflection. I don't know, i'm not a elite runner. I prefer the Asics superblast 2. Like to Fordy. Cheers.
love the SB2
Brilliant clear description. Thank you. Say you go for your 10k pb, would you choose the edge or another brand/model? Yes its a call for your best shoes advice per race distances. 5,10, half, mar.
Not sure tbh
I have watched many reviews of these shoes, and the perspectives are all over the place. The consensus, though, seems to be that the difference is slight and that you should go with how they feel for you. That does not help for people ordering online, but some help is that you can hardly go wrong: both appear to be top of the line and barely different.
I nailed it (from my perspective 🤣)
Great explanation. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Not sure what I'm doing with that info as I already have too many shoes, but good to know.
just enjoy
I have two questions:
1. Do you "feel" the plate in the Sky because there is less foam?
2. Do you feel the Edge softer and more comfortable because has more foam?
Thanks.
prob yes
Hopefully this will help someone decide between the two:
I’m 5’10” and 165lbs and a fairly dominant forefoot striker; the heels of my shoes get almost no wear - my threshold pace is 4:00/km-ish and my 10K PB from earlier this year is 38:45.
Good job! thanks.
Thank you too!
Love the Sky Paris (and I’m most definitely a “cadence” runner…)
Well done. Thanks so much.
Thank you too!
I always thought these two were differentiated by the type of runner's strike zone, as in heel vs fore/mid foot, but this makes about as much sense, I suppose.
Hope so
awesome, however since you are a more mid to forefoot runner how does this analysis workout for heal to midfoot runner/striker? clever boffins at Asics have complicated the art of running LOL. wont be buying though as LOVE my adios pro 3 over anything I have tried, they are super silent ninja shoes... love the comparison budd.
Perfect! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@ƒordy I am a heel striker at most distances. Would you lean one way or the other. Based on the video I was thinking sky like you. I am a higher cadence runner.
Id get the SC Elite v4
@@FordyRuns thanks! I’ve been running in the super comp trainer and rebel so that makes sense since I like those! I guess I’ve been overthinking it
I think you should be at 22 million subscribers by Christmas.
I was hoping in November as I wanted Adidas to take me to Boston
sky gives more carbon plate pop? due to plate flex
Hi, is the midsole of the Edge Paris softer than that of the broken-in superblast v1? Do you think it is exactly the same formulation ?
Yes it feels softer
Good vid on topic impossible to explain - most likely asics is confused itself lol
I like asics shoes quite a bit but as for race im not even considering it cus it seems like id need to buy both to make my mind which one to choose 😅
... better stick with something that works very well for me - adi pro 3
Thank you
When I saw the Olympic marathon there were a lot of variation of people using edge and sky.
At that point it stopped mattering for me haha.
Fair enough
Could you compare it with adidas adios pro 3 or nike vaporfly? Thanks
For me Edge Paris 5/10k and Sky Paris for any distance further than that.
So basically, 5k/10k = Edge. Half and above = Sky ?
Asics: we created both shoe either for Cadence or Long Stride runner
Runner: *buys both for different use (in a way boosting them sales)
Asics: wait you shouldn't do that, as I say they're either for Cadence or Long Stride Runner (yep happens to one of my friend purchasing both of these in Japan, they're such a Geek lol I love Asics)
love it
These are so hard to get hold of, so bought Adios Pro 3 instead. Are these so much worse than Metaspeed?
Better in some way s
AP3's are great.
I feel that the Metaspeed Edge (Paris) is closer to the original Metaspeed Sky (Tokio). 5mm drop and a curved plate, so everyone who preferred that shoe over the Sky plus (flat plate) should go for the Metaspeed Edge (Paris).
I notice that when you use the scale, you no longer ask that we don’t tell Mrs Fordy. Have you & the missus reached an understanding?
As a slow, back of the pack runner, think I’ll get the Saucony Pro 4😂😂😂😂
Good choice
Which is Better? Edge Paris of course !
Funny thing I seen a review the other day on the Sky and the guy likes the sky but he said he should be more suited to the edge 😂
f me hahahaahahaha
I've had a few....now I'm really confused!!
made up my mind and bought 2nd pair of alphafly 3 😂.
The Metaspeeds are so much better than the AF3, I've got the AF3 and ended up with shin pain in my right leg with how firm the shoe is at the front with the pods. Metaspeeds are so light and responsive in comparison.
Hero
@@FordyRuns Easy tiger
@solefreak2 Agree, the AF3's are crazy fast, but have my Achilles screaming for weeks.
I wish ASICS would just make ONE racing shoe instead of this nonsense of two shoes for "different runners" no other company does this. Adidas makes the Pro 3 and that's it. One shoe to rule them all.
@@karls8989 Nike has the Vaporfly and alphafly. adidas has the pro 3 and the Evo 1. What’s wrong with more choices?
Those are different shoes. This is basically the same shoe with very niche differences
@@karls8989 the alpha fly is the same as the sky and the vapor is the same as the edge. Nike actually invented the idea of a shoe with a high plate and one with a low plate. They just market it the way Asics does.
The Sky is definitely lighter...
After its rained
ASICS made it too facking complicated, next time make one version and give us a wide fit option.
They did hence my video
Asics put the plate in middle and make one shoe done hahaha.
Yep
Sky = forefoot, Edge = Heel strike
what about midfoot ;-)
