  • LARRY BIRD, WITH MORE FINANCIAL LITERACY THAN THE FEDERAL RESERVE!
Current NBA players are on a different level regarding securing generational wealth throughout their playing careers. The contracts players have been getting in the last few seasons are ridiculous, and with a new deal on the horizon, they are only set to get bigger. And while legends from eras that have passed didn’t end up making the same amounts, the best of the best were always paid handsome amounts.
Larry Bird is one of the greatest ever to do it, but the Boston Celtics legend has never been one to care too much about the frills. Still, he made $24 million throughout his career, a heavy sum at the time. He has developed his fortune to a reported $75 million, and while that is a lot of money, Bird has never cared much about monetary gain in his life.

I remember reading an article in the late 80s stating Bird's simple financial scheme was to spend his endorsement money, and bank his NBA salary. Jay Leno revealed recently he did something very similar as well; he banked his Tonight Show money and spent his standup comedy money, the reason he worked over 100 gigs a year. Also during the Dream Team time in the Olympics in the early 90s, I read a blurb about Bird walking into a fancy bar/restaurant in Barcelona with other players and ordered a Budweiser beer. When told it was 7 bucks, he pushed it back to the bartender and told him to keep his seven dollar beer. The man mowed his own lawn in French Lick, driving a John Deere tractor. But he should have hired a contractor to build his mothers driveway- in 1985, Bird was shoveling gravel building the driveway and injured his back,. This life-changing moment led to further difficulties in his career. Think what he could have accomplished with a healthy back.

Larry Bird and financial stability! I'm in. It is for these reasons i am a huge Bird fan even though I was a Showtime Lakers supporter back in the day. He would warn players about spending all their money on flash. He said some would come back later, broke and asking for loans.
