It would be good to see some technical testing of the TYT MD-380. I look forward to seeing your tests of the radios too. This is a very good series of videos. I have a review of the TYT on my channel in case anyone else here in the comments would be interested in seeing that. Oh and I can confirm that yes you can do front panel programming on the TYT MD-380
Yes please, more radio stuff. I'm a D-Star user with a DMR radio on it's way to me. Hoping to be able to use the Tytera in the UK and reprogram it for my USA road trips. 73 G4XCA.
+mjlorton My TYT MD-380 has just arrived, very impressed with it so far, I don't have any DMR repeaters in range but have worked one from a nearby hill top...
First of all i must say Thank you! Theese have been great videos for me who until a couple of hours ago had very litle knowledge about radios, but i find it wery facinating and i am hungry to learn more. Please do more of theese if you find the time, and i would appreciate if you could talk about differences i frequencies used around the world, like europe vs. the states. This could help someone travelling a lot ( like me ) Keep up the good work mate!
Thank you. Very informative video and to the point. I am fairly new to amateur radio and trying to get to grips with all the modes available so found this a valuable learning experience. My background is purely analog so digital modes are quite a surprise! All the best from England. 73's.
Enjoyed Part 3 Martin, thanks! Personally I find the digital audio quite annoying but there are a lot of benefits above and beyond simply voice comms that come along with that capability. The nice thing about ham radio as a hobby is that there are so many different aspects that you can be involved with, probably not enough time in a lifetime to explore them all (but worth a try!). 73 - Dino KL0S
Cheers, Martin! I'm really enjoying this video series. Very curious to see how the radios perform under real world scenarios and with different antennas. I'm a big fan of D-STAR mostly because if the repeater accessibly in my area (the closest DMR repeater is well over 100 miles away) and the ability to use dongles, hotspots, nodes, etc. to connect to the various D-STAR reflectors. Thanks again for the videos and keep up the great work!
Thanks Martin. Nice intro. Looking forward to the test results and other radio topics. Hope you can get to try the CSI radio - US designed and built I believe. CSI are also supposedly working on a CS7000 SDR (Software Defined Radio) what would cover multiple digital protocols (DMR, D-STAR and maybe others). Have been promising it for over a year, so will have to see. SDR another interesting technology topic for amateur radio. Who said that HAM radio is just old guys with old technology!!!!!!!
+Gerry Fitzpatrick Thanks for the post Gerry. SDR has also caught my eye so perhaps something for a future video. I did not realise that CSI was US based. I will pay them some attention once I have my radio up and running. Cheers, Martin.
I use Fusion which is proprietary to Yeasu. Currently I can bridge between DMR and the Fusion platforms via a Shark Openspot connected to the internet. Would like if would do a video on these platforms and about Brandmeister operations, thanks! Very informative!
Thank you for that excellent overview that helped bring me up to speed. Wow, digital is amazing. At least I know what it is and I also know I cannot afford to get into it. I must also thank you for helping build my first slim jim. Have now made and use many slim jims. It is possible use a slim jim with a horizontal polarization and take advantage of the somewhat directional properties? Can a reflector also be use with a slim jim and increase gain?
I'd be VERY interested in an emissions analysis! What I've read about the BAOFENGs is that they are all over the map frequency-wise. I have a UV5R and I have noticed it causing interference on some household devices that are unscathed by my other radios.
I don't know if this has been mentioned before or not in the comments. But have you looked into testing Motorola dtr digital talk radios. They are License free, as well as old Motorola Nextel phones that use "direct talk" feature that operate on the 900mhz ism band also license free, i am not a ham but have looked into license free 2 way digital simplex communications and have found both to work great in a regular neighborhood setting. Would love to see either of those technologies included in your test. Thanks!
Mr. Lorton. Sir, an excellent review, and great video. You mentioned a radio, hand held or mobile, that is digital, UHF/VHF, AND FM/analog, that you were " looking into", but did not identify (Brand/Model). Will you please advise me on this radio? Oscar
Have you had any experience with c4fm i use a yaesu on the dv4mini on c4fm and i must say it is by far the most clear digital i have heard the audio quality is amazing seams like on dstar and dmr you have digital artifacts at times and there is many more yaesu fusion repeaters then dstar and dstar had a 10 year head start fusion is growing fast and c4fm is my choice for audio quality but i do love dmr it is a blast 73's love your videos
Can you use these radios on other frequencies and talk to other people or are they connected with the two radios can you use these radios like a CB radio, Thanks.
Great vid. I often wandered about the differences and functionality of Motorola vrs the Baofeng. I would suggest not putting where you live on youtube though.
dear sir, our company is professional poc smart two way radio company, now new model s88 have 4G POC+ DMR UHF.i want to know if you can help us to take a video to show it?
There is a company that tested several radios including motorola. the test was a E1, E2 and E3 EMP. they did this test as a demonstration of a possible EMP Nuclear high altitude attack, as USA have been threaten by this type of attack from Iran and North Korea. The test resulted in motorola NOT surviving any of the levels of EMP attack demonstrations with E1, E2 and E3. secondary test was done with longer EMP as the first was done on a 5 second scale. The downside to this is 99% of the emergency services and hospitals use motorola as most major cities have a government motorola account for the government agencies & its communications. anyways, after watching several of these videos, I have learned to stay away from Motorola UNTIL I have definitive proof that they will survive these types of harsh tests. In this tests they tested HAM radios of different types. and they have survived. either nothing happened to them at all on all three E levels or the EMP shut the radios off and all they needed was to be rebooted to go back to normal operation. I cant remember all the video youtube channels as I have spent several days watching many many many videos, but I assure you they are there. one of them i remember off the top of my head is a company called Solar-Ark on youtube. a company testing how their equipment along with consumer equipment will survive a EMP attack on all E levels as they discuss how their equipment was restructure and re-manufactured and redesigned to protect their own solar system and the consumers property when it came to a serious massive high altitude nuclear EMP attack from enemies. -- Something you might want to take a look at, to obtain some knowledge and understanding as to what technologies are out there in regards to serious dangers of the general public and its society. -- cheers :)
Question, I have the uv-82 and can't find a working copy of the free programming software. I have downloaded from a few sites but can't seem to find one to work with OS vista. Any ideas where I can find a good download?
+buzzsah if you go to the chirp site you want to go to the daily builds download, here is a direct link. Click on the one that is bold and says "installer" trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/
+radiosification I have been using dstar since 2012 . I enjoy it . There are no repeater near me . I built a homemade hotspot and I also use a dvap . I have been very satisfied . There are so many different ways to get started in dstar . I think that the ability to build hotspots and use a dvap from your vehicle using the wifi has slowed repeater growth . There continues to be a growth in dstar . Never say never I say . Chuck
+Chuck Pridgen Have a go on some other digital modes too. DMR is very good. It sounds much better than D-STAR. I don't honestly see the point in using them with hotspots. You may as well download a PPT over IP app on your phone and use that, as that's basically what you're doing with a hotspot.
Police cars. You can out run Chevy, Ford, and dodge. But your can't out run.. moto rolla .. Told to me by Hancock county sherriff , ohio. Jhon bell SR circa 1970. Oh look up VW® vs corvair. Re: un safe at any speed. In this case any frequency . Ha ha it's the epic battle trying to kill off a up start. Chirp provides a muzzle and my Riggs can't work in "officer land". All I get is a beep. Use that muzzle. Better than conflict. In the duplexer column there is a option called "off"=no xmit. 73
I am learning SO MUCH, SO QUICKLY. Thank you, SO MUCH.
PS: I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. I have shared it with some of my Ham-Pals on our FB page and you've picked up a few new fans!
+Zerkbern Thanks for sharing it...and glad to hear it's of value.

Could you make a video specifically on murs, and also talk about the different radio options for murs. Please and thank you

I've watched all your videos,a bunch are above my pay grade but still enjoy them..would like to see a video on cb tuning and how to fix them also.
Thank you from ZR5CAT South Africa. Greatly appreciated.

Is there any vast difference in range between public use 0.5W FRS radios?
So, for personal use without a license, what would you recommend for a handheld radio for distance and quality?
Mr. Lorton. Sir, an excellent review, and great video.

Can I call you to ask some questions for use in a small building but old cement walls, and 3 level floors.
Thanks Martin.
+Robert Calk Jr. My pleasure.
Can you use these radios on other frequencies and talk to other people or are they connected with the two radios can you use these radios like a CB radio, Thanks.
did you evaluate each radio’s antenna? perhaps each radio antenna is tuned to better performance on different frequencies?
Hi great videos. Can you do a video of the antenna you used for your DMR handheld.
What about the Baofeng radios?
Excellent video series! What is the antenna mount that you are using at 21:45?
Great vid. I often wandered about the differences and functionality of Motorola vrs the Baofeng. I would suggest not putting where you live on youtube though.
outstanding!
Interest in buying a anytone Terminator 8R. Were I can buy one .Thanks.
Excellent

Sooo, do you need a license to use DMR for personal use in the U.S?
See my comment about your question in the previous video.
Could you please do a review and in depth review on those Motorola xt radios please
What is a good outdoor antenna for Baofeng uv5r?

don't use that software, it's awful. grab the free open source program Chirp, it supports all baofengs and has a much larger featureset
+Jon Sands Thanks, but that is one of the problems. Everything I've been finding doesn't work. Do you know a good site where I can download it?

Voice sounded like Steven Hawings on dmr
Good footages of yours in fact. Where does your accent come from? Neither American nor British accent.
+Kodiak and Grizzly Bears Thanks, born in England, raised in South Africa...now based here in the USA.

That's very interesting. You've gone through three great countries.
cant wait good bloke
