Reaction to the video from the owner of a 20+ year old Harley Ultra....
    1. GPS - None, I enjoy getting lost
    2. Center Pocket - my windshield bag vibrates making an annoying noise and scuffs the windshield
    3. Fit and Finish - actually decent for what it is
    4. Horn button - no issue using which is good because to many people are on their phones when they drive
    5. Lock notification- lock? what is that? I have a key that I never have with me and a security system that im afraid to use
    6. Entry Light Recognition - I ride at night ALOT, the only modification I needed to do was I added a $2 touch light in my tour pack so I can find my gloves.
    7. Parking brake - none
    8. Seat - Stock seat feels like a lazy boy recliner, doesn't mark up.
    9. AM/FM is also terrible, tried a bunch of different combinations, cant get it to work good enough to actually use
    10. Settings menu - sometimes I have to reset my clock which is pretty simple
    11. TFT dash - I have a collection of analog gauges that all read incorrectly
    12. Wireless CarPlay - yeah I dont even use my radio
    13. Adaptive Cruise Control- I literally have never wanted adaptive cruise control
Great video Cruiseman, No bike is perfect thats a fact.

Larger side bags, be able to see a digital speed on the TFT screen, and be able to put both tire pressures on the screen at the same time. To only have one at a time was super stupid in my opinion. Granted, if one is low it automatically goes to it along with the warning light. Speaking of warning lights, there is a parking brake set light on the dash, so i dont feel the need for them to have an overide switch on the brake. Now what i wish they would have done, was make the silly thing electric and not be able to disengage it without the accessory or key in the run position. I dont like anyone being able to walk up to it and take the parking brake off. It sticks out when set and to me that just begs someone to grab it and release it. Nice video cruiseman.

I totally agree with you about it all and especially the horn button. It should be size different ad RED in color.
Honda should also have the bike make a noise and flash lights when walking away like it does with their cars.
The seat sucks very uncomfortable. Honda needs to have a better helmet lock system.

Excellent points! My number one complaint on my beloved 21 bagger is the all day job it is to change the air filter. My god it’s a touring bike that is made to put on miles. A simple maintenance necessity shouldn’t be that complex. I’ve owned many Hondas and it’s never been more than a 15 minute job.

It's very doable, but is still too cumbersome vs. what you're trying to get accomplished, which is usually a much simpler task with most other motorcycles. 😉

  • @donmartin9567
    @donmartin9567 8 месяцев назад +10

Well, I agree with pretty much everything you've said but there are WAY MORE things that Honda needs to do if they want a leading Motorcycle (I've had a GL1500 and early GL1800 but now ride a BMW R1250GSA).
Start by looking at all the features on the new BMW R1300GS and adapt them to the Goldwing. Along with:
    - A current version of BlueTooth.
    - Blind Spot notification for your mirrors.
    - A 6 Axis MCU.
    - Using the new MCU, adjust braking and acceleration capability when Leaning.
    - Automatic load leveling (preload) based upon the "actual" weight not some stupid diagrams.
    - Automatic suspension adjustment for ride modes (rebound, compression).
    - BlutTooth Carplay
    - More HP and Torque to keep up with competition.
-A Radio that works and you can get rid of XM.
    - Full Security System (Proximity sensor, movement alarm).
    - Increase range to over 200 miles when driven aggressively
    - Remove max speed limiter.
    - Change the location of the air filter.
    - Change the number of oil drain bolts on the DCT model.
    - New dash - touch screen, more user capability to change the screen. Show max speed, construction zones, traffic etc.
And all of the above is just to get the bike up to current bikes, nothing innovative here, so lets add something innovative:
    - Side and rear view screens on the dash instead of mirrors.
    - Night vision (see a deer in the dark).
    - Collision braking / avoidance.
    - Front and Rear cameras continuously recording with ability to save clips.
Oh and seeing as this bike is already priced at the premium level, they can't increase the price by much, they need to stay close to the competition.

  • @steveharleyfan
    @steveharleyfan 8 месяцев назад +3

Chris: I agree with all your points, but would like to add mine:
    - Why make Android Auto (and I assume Apple CarPlay) dependant on a headset being connected. If the headset gets a flat battery you lose all AA and ACP functionality. And due to infrequent GPS updates, many depend on Google Maps / Apple Navigation.
    - The emergency start procedure is a nightmare. I'm sure Honda cars don't have this method to start with a flat fob battery.
    - Helmet storage using the grab handle bracket with the helmet resting on that expensive paint...
    - That air filter change procedure !!! Need I say more?

I put about 14,000 miles on my 22 Goldwing tour manual and was a good bike for the most part. In September I had the water pump replaced under warranty. The whole front of the bike, suspension and all had to come off. A week later I traded it for a 23 BMW r1250rt. Really happy with that decision. BMW has a lot more options than the Goldwing. Thanks for the content. I agree with almost all of your items, here are a few tweaks I’d add.
It does need a touch screen because of car play. It is a PITA, to scroll through the car play menus with those damn buttons. That isn’t how car play is designed to be used, IMHO. If Indian and Harley can do it, Honda can do it. With all of the infotainment issues you mentioned, just throw it out and start over.
The center storage needs some sort of thermal mitigation. Phones overheat and shut down in there pretty easily. When this happens, it sometimes helps to use a wireless dongle and charge in the saddlebag.
Add a parking gear to the DCT. I don’t trust that parking brake.
    Saddlebags are too small.
I agree with the fuel capacity complaints others have mentioned. It’s a lot of engine for such a small tank.

One thing i haven't seen mention yet, though, concerns the hill start assist. Why oh why is it only active for 3 seconds? In the UK there are lots of hills and lots of traffic, so most times you stop on a hill you're going to be there for way more than 3 seconds. On my K1600 the hill start assist kept holding until you applied the throttle. I would like to see the GW work like that.

Great video. The only thing I disagree with is the center pocket. I like that it is not locked. I agree that the GPS/Nav is woefully inadequate. My 11 year old car has the ability to mark the current location as a favorite. On a Goldwing, it is a convoluted process. Also, I am shocked to learn that Indian has a way to chart your drive online, then download the trip to your bike. Come on, Honda!! Surely you can match Indian!!!
Thanks for pointing out the side pocket trim and finish. I thought that I had somehow bent the cover of the side pocket, LOL! Yes, it needs to be better.
As to the Emergency Start process, I hope I never have to use it. I plan to just replace my FOB battery every year and hope for the best. Jerry Palladino made a Goldwing review video a couple of years ago and he asked the Honda salesman to demonstrate the emergency start process. IIRC, it took 2 days and 27 tries before the saleman could correctly complete the process.

My GW 2023 confirms most points Cruiseman criticises on his 2018 model. One point ennoying me is the fuzzy accelerator grip. It had 5 mm of axil play and 4 mm of lateral play when new in April. Now after 12000 km it is even worse. This gas handle mechanics is scrap. On my Vic Cross Country after 125000 km and 10 years it has half the play of the GW new. Others do this better than Honda...

The parking brake issue is the same on the Africa Twin with DCT. I don't know how many times I rode off with the parking brake on and had to immediately stop to unlock it only after doing some damage to the brake pad. What Honda should do but it seems they're too lazy. They should not allow you to start the bike and put it into drive if the parking brake is on. The same safety feature that all motorcycles have when the kickstand is down and you cannot start the engine with the kickstand down. This is a simple safety feature that they completely ignore.

I agree with most of your wants, but some will never happen. I have no complaint with the seat. It’s pointless to ask Honda to make a different seat because it’s not going to work for everyone. Forget the seat. There’s other more important items. How about a redo of the throttle mapping to make all modes usable. How about an easily removable top case and side bags? I came to Honda after owning several K1600 BMW’s and easily removable bags and top case are super nice to have especially for unloading at a motel, cleaning the bike or checking tire pressure. The Wing is a pig to check the rear tire air pressure or add air. How about better drop protection? Why not a touch screen? I don’t have long arms and I can reach the screen on my ‘Wing. ACC should have been on this bike years ago as well as a digital speedometer. Honda really falls short in a lot of areas, which is too bad because I like mine. Unfortunately if BMW had a K1600 with DCT I would buy one in a heart beat and trade or sell the ‘Wing.

I sure hope Honda is listening. Thanks for this.
I’ve owned my ‘21 Tour DCT since new, in April of that year. Three of your points resonated with me. The seat is a big one on my list. My wife and I did an 8000 mile ride this summer. I was often standing to give my butt a rest. You would think that a comfortable seat on a luxury touring bike would be a top priority. Older GoldWings had really good seats. Honda dropped the ball years ago in that department.
The parking brake is another area that has me shaking my head. Why not have an electronic brake and get rid of that clunky, manual lever? It’s quite vulnerable to vandalism and / or tampering. And yes, I’ve driven off several times without releasing the damn thing. At the very least, your suggestion of a relay to prevent the bike from going into gear if the parking brake is on is great!
I can live with just about everything else, but off the top of my head two more things come to mind. I’ve never been able to connect to Apple CarPlay. I’ve given up on that. It should be an easy, reliable connection.
My last one is the TFT window. Surely there is a material out there that is at the very least, scratch resistant. The stock one is so fragile and would be a real pain to replace, should need be. Thankfully, I saw one of your videos about how to clean it to avoid scratches. Mine still looks very good, although, scratches are inevitable.
Anyway, I didn’t set out to write an essay here. If you’re still with me, thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work.
    Dwight

Apple CarPlay: i say this not knowing what you have done::: I have a 21 as well. I don't why it has to be this way but, the helmet bluetooth has to be connected to the bike before you plug the USB cable connection from the bike into the phone. I have found it clunky and sometimes have to repeat both connections to get it to work properly, that and it also worked better for me turning bluetooth off on the phone.

@@rickallen848; I should try again, but I’m living just fine without it. My phone syncs with the bike automatically, so I can receive and make phone calls. Same with texts. That’s all I really need. I do see the number of the caller on the screen. So I’m not sure why I’m not seeing my phone screen on the TFT. But it’s really not a big deal for me.

If they make these things, TOMORROW I will preorder one (but we are out of luck for 2024):
    - Airbag on the bagger DCT
    - Get rid of analog gauges and put a nice TFT, like new Harley CVOs
    - Wireless AA and Apple Carplay
    - Distronic (adaptive cruise control)
    - Back radar for blind spots
    - Either get rid of of the small unlocked phone compartiment, or make it bigger, vented or cooled by a Peltier, and lockable
    Optionally:
    - I heard they filled some patents, and one of them is sweet: HUD on the windshield.
    - Also one 12v European DIN socket near the left leg, and one on the tank, would make my life very easy with electrical heated gloves and pants.
That's all I'm asking to make it perfect. It is very good right now, but those would make it perfect.

Great points, especially the parking brake issue. I was riding this past weekend with friends who are mostly Harley riders. We made a lunch stop and everyone parked on a slight incline. I put my parking brake on, but felt the bike rolling, so I had to move my 2019 Gold Wing DCT to flat ground.
Also good points about the GPS and the poor AM/FM radio reception. The GPS really needs an update, and I can't understand why the AM/FM radio's reception is so awful. I am often riding within the San Antonio city limits and can't pick up my favorite FM station without static. So strange...

Since I installed a Ridevision system on my '21, I truly appreciate the need for having blind spot monitoring and collision avoidance stock on all new Goldwings. Best accessory by far that I ever purchased for any of my Motorcycles. The 3 hour digital video video loop created by both the forward and rear facing cameras is also awesome and will be helpful in the event of an accident, or to relive a ride. If an aftermarket company can produce such a system for $600, Honda could do it for much less leveraging the existing systems. I'd love to see adaptive cruise control, an updated version of Bluetooth, and I'd love to see Max at Traxxion Dynamics sell his tip over protection solution to Honda (I'm sure so would he). Lastly, I'd love to be able to adjust throttle response. I ride exclusively in Sport Mode, but would like the throttle to be a bit less twitchy.

A thousand ditto's on the horn button, and Android Auto also has the issue with the unrequested audio source change to FM. I'd also submit that the headlights, even though they're LED, could be a lot better (brighter). I was able to upgrade my 2016 wing to LED headlights that were probably 2x brighter than the stock LED headlights that came with my 2021 Wing (which as far as I know are not upgradeable). And, I might as well add, that I don't know if it's just my 2021 DCT (because it's the only DCT I've ever ridden), but re-accelerating after decelerating without a full stop (i.e. decelerating down to something between 10 to 30 MPH and then re-accelerating) sure seems a lot jerkier than it ought to be (even after 15K miles and reinitializing the DCT many, many times).

I never understood the complaints about the NAV system. It's always gotten me where I needed to go. My biggest complaints with the bike is the radio reception, and the ridiculous amount of disassembly required to change the air filter. Another complaint is tire wear. I don't know why the GW is so hard on tires, but I corrected this issue by going double darkside. Also, the stock seat absolutely sucks, but I also corrected that by having the seat redone by Russell Day Long. I also think the speed limiter is set ridiculously low. This bike would easily and safely go much faster...

Great things for Honda to consider. Since there are no changes for the 2024 model, I'll have to hold out for 2025 and see what the 50th anniversary model will be. I would surely think that Honda has employees who have jobs to watch social media and see what consumers are commenting on and wanting for future models. Maybe you'll get a chance to talk to some Honda reps at EICMA and mention these things to update the 2025 GW.

Honda is smart in that sense as far as retooling..In 84-85 they started on the 88 gl1500, and that ran unchanged for 12 years. The gl1800 ran for 17 years with minimal changes in 2012 to the fairing and side cases. It would be nice if they make some changes, but I would definitely not hold my breath!

Hey Cruiseman, Love your videos... I have a 2021 DCT Tour and the Glove Box Latch works perfectly on mine. I can presss middle or right side and it opens right up... now I cannot press on the left side and have it open but middle works fine. Agree with the lock which should work with the dongle key.
Totally argree with you on the Parking Brake, it is so easy to drive away with it on. Traxxion Dynamics offers a fix for the Parking Brake which I added.
For my butt the Seat is way too hard and I can only last about an hour before I start to notice aches and pains. By 3 hours I am pretty sore and even getting off to rest won't help, the pain returns shortly after jumping back in the saddle. I plan to make a trip down to Ultimate Seats in Daytona, but this is an expensive upgrade and with how much this bike costs I feel it should come with a good saddle. I also have a small tear in the seat at the stich line which occured after only 5k.
IMO and it's just my opinion, the Apple CarPlay is horrible. Why I have to have a headset attached is nuts. It should also be wireless. I like Waze for highway trips and rarely if ever use a headset. I have tried purchasing external BlueTooth Receivers and nothing has worked. The headset icon does appear at the top of the screen, so the system does "think" there is a headset there and once for a short second, Apple CarPlay did come up, but then went away. So not sure what Honda considers a "Headset". I have both Schuberth and a Shoei helmets and just hate having to have these charged and ready to go in order to use my Apple CarPlay... The sound should just go through my stereo on the Bike. Also when connected it just drops randomly so it is not reliable. I cannot use the phone feature at high speeds as no one can understand what I am saying so this is useless too. I just want the Nav to come out of my speaks while using REVER or Wazes. I think this is my biggest issue with the Goldwing.
Top 2 are definately the Seat and the Cell Phone Connectivity be it Android or Apple.
    Thanks Again.

I have a Honda Accord with Adaptive Cruise Control, and I really wanted to love that feature, but it was so bad in actual use that I gave up and found in the manual how to disable it. Even at the shortest following distance setting, other cars would pass and cut in front of me, causing the car to slow down more, which would then cause the next person behind to pass, and so forth, until my car was going so slow that I became the traffic problem. So I guess I'm one of the few who isn't interested in it on my Gold Wing. And don't get me started on Hill Start Assist...

The main two reason I decided to sell my 2018 Goldwing was suspension and engine performance and for me those are the two key items for Honda to address. Suspension is way too under dimensioned for the bike and the engine performance on highway speeds feels sluggish. After test riding the 2024 K1600GTL the engine and suspension performance was a much better fit for how I want the motorcycle to perform. I do miss Apple CarPlay and the DCT. I’d also add that Hi as should consider wireless Apple CarPlay for the next version and also eliminate the need to have headset paired and on for CarPlay to work.

Chris. Great overview as usual. Suggestion. Test an Africa Twin for comparison of user features that could and shouts be incorporated into the Goldwing. Especially the TFT the features on this new bike , are in my opinion exactly what are needed on the Goldwing, and as I recall are among the suggested additions you outline for GW.
It's almost mind numming that HONDA, the world maker of the most sophisticated automates in the world can't integrate their vehicle features, I.e., GPS, adaptive cruise control, fob and locking features, chirp locking and unlocking feature, flashing lights locator, emergence button and perhaps an anti theft alarm into their flagship touring bike.
The Africa Twin right now is as good an option for long distance touring as the Goldwing, and has duel sport capabilities. Check out the RUclips reviews on these features.
Sad that between the Africa Twin features and the their car features we can't integrate these-needed improvements on the Goldwing that for which we pay slightly more or less than a Civic or Accord. But I digress. 😖 simple in my option they don't listen or care about this product or business segment.

    • @razorwired130

I certainly appreciate the features that the Africa Twin brings but people are NOT cross shopping them for the same mission. Totally different bikes. Agree that Honda could/should easily incorporate ADC and Blind Spot monitoring to the GW. Honda has repeatedly been lazy and arrogant on GW upgrades.

    • @SecurityBob
      @SecurityBob 8 месяцев назад +3

That was my point yes two different bikes for different and similar usage. And the minimal suspension in the Goldwing versus the adjustable shocks on the duel sport might improve performance as consistently sold and pointed out by Traxxion Dynamics. And yes to modify the failed updates talked about by Both Chris' for years SHOULD be an easy tech transfer to the Goldwing using those resources from the car and African Twin development teams. And since the have ignored these please since 2018 I rest my case the don't literally give a crap. Every vehicle I have purchased knew I was surveyed to death on customer satisfaction. Every car dealer service manager beg one to please give all 10 when they send you a survey. I have never been asked or been asked or sent by any Powersports dealer or Honda corporate since 1998 , not one time a customer satisfaction survey or questionnaire about my Honda motorcycle experience. I literally have not seen one Honda owner on any GW site talk at right about them personally calling the Honda customer service line relating these reported improvement suggestion. Tge concerns, complaints and dissatisfactions always end with the statement " I hope Honda Reads or watch's the vlog it the written rant. Perhaps a Goldwing Matters" social justice movement flooding Honda customer services in mass wth thousands of telephonic and written complaints until we get an acknowledgment of our being ignored. Also those, including myself who may have privately complained or suggested change have as I recall have all said they have never had a thank for your concerns follow up either. So I rest my case. As usual evident in today's environment they who rally and scream the loudest seem to snatch the golden ring. Otherwise let's just stop repeating every release of no changes again this year hoping no one cares what the owner have to say - it been so obvious how their silence speaks volumes as to what we think or suggest. But I digress further. Yep pissed. But I do love my 19 and at 77 I on my last opportunity to bitch. ☘️🙂😝🇺🇸

The dash screen is beautiful but not used as it could be...there should be more info screens and like why when using the phone is the whole screen taken up with useless phone info and you no longer can see the map...the phone info should be in a small box while using the map like it is when using Android Auto...and this bike definitely needs a touch screen...trying to navigate thru Android Auto with the bikes handlebar controls is like going on the internet with your smart TV using its remote..yea you can do it but it's just so frustrating....and why does the elapsed time feature reset everytime you restart the bike..its meant for road trips but its totaly useless programmed like it is.
The dash screen material scratches just cleaning it...with the sun behind the bike the dash screen looks horrible with all the fine scratches...the dash screen needs to be made from better material.
The seat is horrible...it's was designed for looks and not comfort..why not a RDL type of seat like the older Gold Wings had from Honda..Honda couldn't had made a worse seat than is what's on the current Gold Wing.
The horn button...while I spent months training myself to be able to hit the horn button in a split second without looking, this bike deserves a bigger horn button.
The self canceling turn signal time needs to be adjusted...why should we have to hit the turn signal button two or three times when making a turn so the turn signals don't turn off before we get to the turn....my Yamaha self canceling turn signals work perfectly with the timing.
The saddlebags should be larger and the trunk should have the helmet holders at the bottom of the trunk like with the old model...the current helmet holder is a joke and couldn't be worse.
The colors....why is it Honda only wants to paint this bike in primer colors and all black out look...we need brighter colors
Just some of my nic pics with this machine....but the pros with this machine far outweigh the nic pics and this Gold Wing is still the best motorcycle I've owned...it's just Honda could do better pretty easily and if Honda expects us owners with older models to trade up, then Honda better get going on some upgrades...other wise there is no reason to trade up...except for the slightly larger trunk, the 2023/24 model is the same as my 2018, but with awful colors.

My Indian Roadmaster has a 4 digit code to enter when the key fob is lost, broken, or just doesn’t work. Super easy to do. Also the UI is able to be setup to offer you the information that you want to see. They have 3 screens that are customizable, that operate at the touch of a button, to display the different information you want to see.
Honda is the leader in touring motorcycles. They need to lead and stop following other manufacturers with outdated technology.
I also keep my extra FOB in the left saddlebag, with the FOB turned off. Then if the other one quits, breaks or gets lost, I open the left saddlebag, get the FOB, turn it on, and away we go.

I really want to purchase a 24 GW but the sum of these 13 parts plus a few other ( tip over protection and removable bags ) really are making me pause. You do say you still love the bike and it’s phenomenal etc. BUT if you didn’t own one already, would you jump in on the 24 model ?

What about cornering abs? It seems like they have some bikes with it, but I haven't seen anything about it on the goldwing.

Yes agree that the Goldwing is falling behind it's competition. They certainly put effort into their smaller bikes - maybe that is where they see profit.
Is the Goldwing going to continue at all - maybe it is being allowed to slowly die.

Along with all the things Cruiseman mentions, first thing I noticed when I got my 2022, was that I was not a comfortable ride. I expected the top-of-the-line bike for comfort would be very comfortable. Not!
The seat, the handlebars, the foot rests, all had to be replaced at quite an expense to make to bike ridable over long distances. Once that was done, it was a much better bike, but I should not have had to do it, Honda should. Then there is the infotainment/nav system. It is total junk. Toss it completely and star over. Oh, ya. And get a dang volt meter!

More exciting colours might make me want one more. White, grey or black really sucks.

Agreed!!! Don't forget maroon! Honda ALWAYS has to have maroon option for some reason. When looking at the field of used wings, maroon leads the pack, by a lot.
