Thanks so much for doing this comparison. I don't feel Floetrol gives brighter colours I think it keeps the colours from over blending therefor preventing that muddy look. Maybe that's where the word binder comes into it. I love cells more than anything so the answer is maybe less Floetrol with the paint plus some water.
According to my little experience and the following video, if you are in love with cells, you definitively have to give silicone (Dimethicone) a try ! :-) ruclips.net/video/HkSXvivhYX0/видео.html Moreover, using a blowtorch could really give amazing and unexpected results !
Thank you for making this video..I don't have the money to keep buying the floetrol and silicone, let alone the canvas., love the one with the water more than the one with the floetrol..pretty.
Thank you for this video. I've been hearing floetrol all over my painting community. I've never used it. I've only ever used water. I've never had the paint get muddy like that. I think it was just a coincidence that it happened with yours.
I'm an only a beginner, have done one acrylic painting...today. After watching many videos from craft to professional, I think the key with the cells is the atomic weight of the paint. The heavier paints will sink and the lighter ones rise to the surface creating cells. Maybe the key is in the order the colours are poured into the cup, heaviest first through to lightest. I noticed a comment today that indicated some colours will muddy if poured together, e.g.yellow and purple. Thanks for sharing.
I am sitting here early in the morning with my coffee and the sun coming up-- these paintings are simply amazing !! After I wake up :-) I'm going to give this a try !!!! Thanks for such an extraordinary idea !! Joan
MMGIRL. I LIKE BOTH PAINTINGS AND AM SURPRISED THE ONE WITHOUT ADDITIVE TURNED OUT LIKE IT DID.... YOUVE HELPED ME NO END COS IVE PUT OFF HAVING A GO, ONLY HAVING PAINTS. SEEN SOME DONE WITH OLIVEOIL, SOME WITH CRC. THANK YOU FOR SHARING EXPERIMENT. 💞 CAMILLE AUSTRALIA
The Floetrol isn't used to create the cells though. Also you should let us know what brand of paint was used because different brands are just good for creating cells on there own with nothing added. I liked the Floetrol one better :-) A tip, if that's okay, buy the Floetrol in the gallon container its WAY more cost effective.
Katie Moseler I usually put the supplies used in the description but I totally forgot, I'll add it :) And I do usually buy the gallons, they were out but I got them to give me the gallon price on these :)
take into account that the difference between the 2 is also attributed to the floetrol cup being allowed to sit stationary for a longer period of time, this allowed the colors to settle a little longer and resulted in the colors showing up a bit better/differently, if you allowed the same time for the water cup, you would see similar results (ie. brighter colors), other than that, I think they both turned great, nice job :)
Enjoyed the experiment really surpried with the cell formation in the paint that was just mixed with water.?? Love your videos. Thanks for the demonstration it was intriguing.
They both appear to have cells coming through the black, which is normal because black and white paints are heavier. They both turned out beautifully. You will have to watch for crazing on the one done with just water. Great experiment.
Very cool! The one in the left is like an all seeing eye in space, the one on the right made me think of and octopus tentacle reaching for something in the bubbles. :)
Wonderful experiment! The one with water reminds me of something reptilian while the flotrol one is more volcanic. Both gorgeous! Every time I look at one of for experiments I feel like I'm taking an ink blot test! And I think I'm leaning toward being cuckoo!!
I love both, but did u use anything in the right side one ,the one with water. Was silicone or anything else added or jus water and paint? I love it so I guess I can do my pour with jus paint n water
Ok, with the first one I thought what beautiful colours and what amazing cells (do you spell it that way?) but when you lifted the second cup... no joking, my jaw dropped. I defenetly wanna try out there colours
I really like the way the cells with water turned out and look 3d effect along with the amazing mixture together. I’m not a huge cell person. I like lacing better. Totally not worth paying for floetrol or any pouring medium for that.
Excellent video. Thankyou very very much. Enjoyed this helpful video. Both of them art pieces are fab. I really like the right water one as to me reminds me of a tree n mysterious. I am now your fan. Love and Light from England
Both for the best of both worlds. You have two different paintings there; both lovely. The cells look nice, and clever! This acrylic pouring technique is exciting, and so creative. Looks like it took hours to create, and they can sell?
I have found that Floetrol dulls color and suppresses cells from forming well. When its wet it looks awesome, but when it dries the colors darken. Also, I have gotten muddy results when using Floetrol. Plus, it goes fast and gets expensive when you're having to buy bottle after bottle. After seeing this, I will start using water. I bet you'd get better cells of you add silicone.
At 4.51 to the video i see one seal come out with an eye but when you tilt it is gone keep that in mind next time, i always look when i tilt cause manyanimals come out to my paintings. Good work . 👌💓
I wonder what you would get if you were to intentionally whip one of the colors before you added it to the cup, to make it foamy and full of bubbles. Then, if that looks good, try whipping up 2 or more colors before adding to the mix. I suspect you would get a lot of cells. You could use one of those cheap dollar store metal wisks to whip them up with.
How about the surface of the painting after drying, do you still see the canvas texture in both? I haven't bought Floetrol yet but with just water the canvas texture shows through strongly even with a triple primed canvas
That just goes to show us that you don't need really anything to help with cells. As long as you have your consistency right you can get cells with just paint and water. It's just the different densities of the paint that react with one another. Heavier sinks and causes cells.
Awesome demo. As always. They really turned out good. By the way, you pour a lot, what do you do with all those paintings? Do you hang all of them on your walls? I just repaint.
In the use of "floetrol" are you mixing 'water or floetrol' to EACH paint color PRIOR to pour time ???? I seem to have a problem understanding this critical point. Any help would be beneficial ! Does adding floetrol to any paint prior to pour time dilute the seperate colors ? Thanks in advance .
go back and watch this video again...when you first lift the can that has foetrol check out the design. near the bottom where you have blue then green then blue if you look at it you can see a little monster character lol he actually has a mouth and an eye with his green hair blown backwards!! wish you had left it like that! I hope you find what I am talking about because it looked really awesome! I can see several more creatures in there too at that stage. Let me know if you see them.
Hi there! It’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing. May I know that how have the cells appeared with only plain acrylic colours and water/floetrol? Have you added some special kind of paints or some serum for cells?
Both look great, I like the Flotrol better but water is still very nice. Do you use water in your paints to give them the runny consistency when pouring into the cups?
How did the one with water only dry? I did one over the weekend with paint, water and a couple of drops of silicone. There were hardly any cells and when it dried it cracked and separated badly. (I'll 'fill' the cracks with inks and turn it into a mixed media piece). The same thing happened when I tried PVA glue, water and paint. It is fun - and frustrating - to experiment!
So no silicone in either of them? What kind of paint do you use? I’m having the hardest time getting cells on mine and use many diff types of paint but generally tend to buy inexpensive paint. I’m wondering if there’s a specific brand that’s known for producing the best cells?
My question is how does Floetrol affect the consistency of acrylic paint at different ratios? One of the desired effects I'm sure is that it doesn't affect the colors as one might expect when adding water which acts as a solvent to acrylic paint. If the outer edge of the poured paint is of a lighter consistency it might make it easier to cover the entire canvas, and probably a desired effect. But suppose you're only interested in achieving the elongated strips of the wing effect, regardless of whether it covers the whole canvas or not. Does it help if the paint on the outer edge of the pour is thicker than the paint in the color bands within?
This just proves that these companies that say you have to use the floetrol is just out for your money. There is somebody at an Art Festival last weekend who did a poor and she didn't use any additives. And she had sales in her painting
Don’t you use torch on this case, how about silicone? Sometimes I’m feel lost, because a lot people use silicone, fluetrool, dish soap and torch sometimes.
+Raindrops09 there are many things you can use, but that doesn't mean you have to. Different products produce different results, silicone can help with cells, so can a torch, but you don't need either. Dish soap can also produce cells, but I don't recommend it as I'm not sure of the longevity of it. What you basically need is paint that is of the right consistency for pouring, which you can get by minimally watering it down or better would be adding pouring medium of some sort. You can add silicone and use a torch if you'd like, those will just produce different effects.

Moreover, using a blowtorch could really give amazing and unexpected results !
I shall try your suggestion with my next pour, you could be onto something :) I do use silicone and torch but cells still seem to elude me.
Jesus loves you
Perfect video! Short sweet & to the point, with no annoying music in the background that sounds like your on hold with the phone company..
Love it!
I used just water and it came out amazing! Thank you for showing me that I don't actually need floetrol or silicone or anything else!
Fascinating! I'm just starting my fluid painting journey, and my head is spinning from reading all the recipe options.
+CoolGray lol I understand! The recipe that has worked best for me is 2/3 floetrol to 1/3 paint with a little water :)
@@MixedMediaGirl can I do this without floatrol cuz I don't have any
@@MixedMediaGirl I tried with just water it didn't work it came out clumpy
@@MixedMediaGirl I tried nail polish it works well but it didn't work well cuz I didn't have enough of each color
I appreciate you doing this side by side experiment!!! I’ve only been using water and now I know why my colors are becoming muddy. 🙌🏻
Wasn't expecting water to make such nice cells. Thanks for the experiment.
Live it the second pour shows more depth in the colors love it thanks for sharing.
+Karen Escalera thanks for watching :)
i just luv fluid art!!! every piece is unique!!!!
+Jill Kay I agree!
Thank you very much for this demonstration. I loved the effect of Floetrol, although I was surprised by the large cells that mix with water.
Thank you for making this video..I don't have the money to keep buying the floetrol and silicone, let alone the canvas., love the one with the water more than the one with the floetrol..pretty.
+Cynthia Gulley sure!
Thank you for this video. I've been hearing floetrol all over my painting community. I've never used it. I've only ever used water. I've never had the paint get muddy like that. I think it was just a coincidence that it happened with yours.
Thanks for post on difference between the two. Learning a lot from your posts are . Can't wait to do this!
+nelda blanco thank you!
Thank you for showing us the difference.
Very educational. Thanks for doing this.
Beautiful. On both. Thx for the test.
If you have alittle imagination the painting on the left top left corner you can se a dove flying!!
Thanks for answer. I thought it was important to have silicone and I have not had a very good results with it so nice to know you don't need it.
+Nola Muller sure :)
Thanks so much for sharing this experiment, and again the floetrol gives a lot of small white spots/dots, 😊❤️👍
+Gina Feddersen thanks and yep :)
I love both of them
+Billie Rice thanks! Me too :)

Very cool. I like the way the floetrol is brighter as well. Water one is nice as well.
Whoa, that yellow popped thru and saved the muddy part of the water one. Both are fantastic.

The one with water I think did the cells because water has a lot of chemicals in it that we arent aware of? Possibly !! Awesome paint pour!!

"flow acrylics" is that a special type of paint? Would I get cells with house paint too?
Thanks

Very nice!
Mixed Media Girl where?
www.etsy.com/shop/MixedMediaGirlEtsy
Thank You! I had missed those replies :(
thanks for comparing.
It isn't the Floetrol that makes cells anyway it's the weight of the paint itself.
And silicone or alcohol
I can't produce cells at all, I didn't see you add any additive like a silicone... Or did I miss that bit
Do you always condition your paint and with what? I love your work it’s AWSOME!
I don't know because I'm new to painting
go back and watch this video again...when you first lift the can that has foetrol check out the design. near the bottom where you have blue then green then blue if you look at it you can see a little monster character lol he actually has a mouth and an eye with his green hair blown backwards!! wish you had left it like that! I hope you find what I am talking about because it looked really awesome! I can see several more creatures in there too at that stage. Let me know if you see them.
I'm about to try this for the first time on a painted black canvas
OMG! Did you not use silicone to get cells? I'm so sad because I tried a lot but I didn't get cells in my paints... :(
Thank you for the experiment :*
WD 40
I have used silicone, torched, used floetrol.. nothing. I get divots not cells lol
Hi there! It’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing. May I know that how have the cells appeared with only plain acrylic colours and water/floetrol? Have you added some special kind of paints or some serum for cells?
The Floetrol painting looks like an abstract deconstructed face. There’s an eye and a nose. Both clear as day. So creepy!
Oh I guess it doesn’t show as much at the end. But when you first poured and tilted it was crazy!
Mandy Roy lol I love all the crazy things you can see in paintings :)
Mandy Roy y
Mandy Roy the human brain is programmed to see faces in everything we see x
Yes, saw that too. Then it looked like the face was melting when she started spreading the paint.
Omg I found you again thank God. Did they both have silcone?
very interesting! #KnowledgeIsPower!#AwesomeTeam☮
+Carl Watts thanks :)
Are you mixing water in the paints before you pour them into the "pour cup"?
Great video
Which one is water/floetrol and how use it with panits
What causes the cells if there is no silicone?
+Claire Bloggs honestly I don't know, I haven't gotten that far in my research :)
Different densities of different pigments
Air bubbles popping too, right?
But the paint was the same in each cup.
Excellent!....btw....do you ever wear gloves to protect your fingers/hands?
+Amerigo I do sometimes, I know I should it just usually doesn't happen :(
Both look great, I like the Flotrol better but water is still very nice. Do you use water in your paints to give them the runny consistency when pouring into the cups?
Yep. The materials used are in the description :)

Definitely with floetrol for me!
So no silicone in either of them? What kind of paint do you use? I’m having the hardest time getting cells on mine and use many diff types of paint but generally tend to buy inexpensive paint. I’m wondering if there’s a specific brand that’s known for producing the best cells?
@mixedmediagirl is the ratio of water to paint the same as floetrol to paint? 60/40% paint?
This! I’m halfway through the video and am hoping she says it at some point but your comment leaves little hope
I like the water one nice
I like the one with water. Seems to have more depth and interaction of colors.
I'm new to this and loving it so far. Thank you for the videos! My question is did you flood the canvas first and if so with what? Thank you!
That was interesting. Did you use silicon in both?
No silicone:)
This just proves that these companies that say you have to use the floetrol is just out for your money. There is somebody at an Art Festival last weekend who did a poor and she didn't use any additives. And she had sales in her painting
