  • Over 400 members of the Irish Defence Forces paraded through Letterkenny today. 3 May 2019
It was a wonderful spectacle and there were big crowds out on the streets of the town to witness the historic parade.
The event took place ahead of the army personnel's deployment to Lebannon.
It all got underway on Friday morning when they were officially reviewed at the grounds of St. Eunan's College by the Minister with Responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe and Defence Forces Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Mark Mellett DSM.
The parade left St. Eunan's College and made its way down High Road and through the centre of the town to the Community Centre on Pearse Road.

I don't like the Irish military, I went to join them in 2005, was told my services would be best suited for the British army and not the Irish because I wanted to be an army ranger special forces after a few years.. instead I become a mechanical engineer with the british army and went to war 3 times and had to pick my friends up off the ground in pieces and put them into bags.. I was bomb disposal.. first in to defuse an IED, not everyone got lucky, some where traps, and one day my suit was acting up so Andre went In ahead of me and I followed not long after only to be hit by parts of him after the IED exploded. My daughter asks me about the wars, I can't tell her. It would scar her for life.. so my respect for what I did for freedom is nowhere because telling anybody of what happened is not freedom, it's hell.. killing people, kids, men, women.. I look at my daughter sometimes and it makes me think of the things I had to do.. so I don't like the Irish military Because I should have served them instead of serving in hell.. that's what I always say when people ask me about the wars..

Our defense deserves better, our troops are well trained and under funded, the state seems to not need a Defence Force thats what i see from the historical perspective because i wonder what would happen if the defence force was properly funded and with the equipment that it needs to professionally run the forces.

Eagle Squadron - British composer Kenneth J. Alford wrote a march, "Eagle Squadron", in honour of the pilots of the Eagle Squadron. The Eagle Squadron were 3 fighter squadrons of the Royal Air Force formed during World War II with volunteer pilots from the USA. They also lost their nationality and had is restored sometime later. Rather like many Irishmen who fought in the British Army during WW2.

Not too keen on Irish people SLAGGING off their own lads here.EVEN worse, some clowns DARE to slag off the British Army...FAMED AROUND THE ENTIRE EARTH as a BASTION of military expertise. If THESE Irish lads HAD been trained by the British then the rather slack (it saddens me to say) "marching" would be of a standard you could SHAVE WITH!. see ANY "trooping Of The Colour" video here on Y.T. to confirm this!. The Irish lads have NEVER lacked BALLS, the fact that the bravest of the brave (Victoria Cross holders)have MANY Irish among their ranks prooves that.I do wonder about how they are trained and led though.Although politically impossible, given this Regiments reputation in Ulster, i think Irish soldiers, trained up by the British Parachute Regiment would be a force to be reckoned with. As it is, the whole ethos of the ROI forces is "defensive"..."peace Keeping". Although a laudible aim i feel the lads of the Republic should be far more PRO ACTIVE.Too many small countries feel they will never be subject to attack or that they can rely on OTHERS to defend them. That is a very dangerous gamble.

Steve Radford. in my 21 years in the Irish DF's i served with a few ex Brits, some foreign legion & a guy from the Rhodesian light infantry, I've also served alongside many other nationalities & I can assure you that Irish training is as professional as any, "IF" you knew wtf you were talking about, you'd realise this was done on a grass pitch, therefore the troops can't hear their fall of foot. A body of troops marching rely on their fall of foot for their timing, of course only another soldier would understand that after countless hours "square-bashing" (Not grass bashing) which leads me to the conclusion that you never served.
The 1921 treaty forced on Ireland by the British actually stipulates the size & function of the Irish Army (you can google & read for yourself) This was an act of fear by your Mr Churchill and something the Irish have honoured to this day, you weren't a soldier & you are no historian, get a clue mate!

As commited members of the EU, from which it has benefited immensely, Ireland should be forced to meet a minimum strength of military, including some level of air force and navy. Should Russia make a move on this country, it will be at the mercy of UK and other Euro/nato defence forces. Utterly shameful.
