    Lovely old film but yet it gives me a melancholy feeling. We really do walk around these streets in the footsteps of the past.

      leedsman54 .......I get what you mean but look at it another way these people most likely had good lives (maybe better than us now) also the the quality of the film give it a false air. It would have been vibrant happy busy. Leeds was/ is a good place to live and people probably had a better chance of getting a job than they do now. I feel more melancholy looking at at the parts that have gone down the toilet to be honest despite all the beautiful new buildings arcade shopping centres in the town.
      It’s still a great place of course 🙂.

    In the top LH corner can be glimpsed Leeds Town Hall. My grandfather was taken by his father to see Queen Victoria officially open it.

    Just breathtaking.... Now there's only soulless cars and buses trying to keep up to the fast paced ideal of the 21st century. The sounds of the horses and carts and trams and foot traffic would be fascinating to the people of today, not to mention all the different smells.

    Fascinating film.I was born in Leeds in 1936. If that is the town hall top left---then the road centre right must be Boar Lane. The city square that we know today would be centre left, only partly shown here.

    I remember Leeds only from the 50s but I can say that although we did not have much in the material stakes it was a nicer happier and safer than the cesspit it has now become.So much for the EU Utopia promised.The sooner we are of it the better.

    I think you will find it was actually filmed in 1888 by Louis le Prince, Le Prince disappeared in 1890 on his way to the US to showcase his invention. Louis Le Prince. Filmed at Oakwood Grange in Roundhay, Leeds in the north of England on 14 October 1888, it is believed to be the oldest surviving film in existence. Along with Leeds bridge,

      It wasn't, this was filmed 18 months after the Roundhay Gardens footage, according to Wikipedia.

    Is that something steam powered in the top left corner? Maybe a crane?

      trippy119 Yeah i get that lol. what i meant was where exactly would the cameraman be stood for the angle to show the town hall in the left corner. The street to the right would have to be park row but then the old post office buildings are missing. Just trying to get my bearings

    • @trippy2johno280
      @trippy2johno280 7 лет назад

      lol..my guess is that it can't be the town hall in the top left hand corner of the post office building, if you go on google maps (BIRDS EYE VIEW) from where the camera man is standing (SLIGHTLY ELEVATED IT SEEMS FROM STREET LEVEL GOING BY THE OLD FILM ) and follow the line going past the left of the post office building you end up going towards the bottom end of the Headrow towards the inner ring road. so yeah it is slightly confusing??

    • @trippy2johno280
      @trippy2johno280 7 лет назад

      the town hall should be at the right hand side of the post office building not the left so either it cant be the town hall or the camera man can't be stood where we think he is?!

      trippy119 have to agree there. The only way it could be the town hall is if the cameraman was stood at the end of bishopsgate with park row to the right. Id always assumed it was looking down wellington street towards the royal exchange with city sq on the left. I suppose it helps to bear in mind that city sq was still work in progress at the time of this video. Ill try figure this out and report back.
