    I'm a regular CHCH Church-goer and I wouldn't spend council money on this or any church. He's also right about the square, the whole center of town is a shambles.
    This has happened continually and is BS the amount they spend on this crap. Google, CHCH EQ Cost blowout.
    Convention Centre: $280 to $475m
    Stadium: $533m to $683m

    I worked on the Christchurch Arts Center rebuild for 3 years and watched that kitty get emptied by consultants and heritage huggers, with little rebuild progress. Funnily enough, more than 10 years later it sits unfinished (and broke) whilst the consultants fill their pockets elsewhere (some working on the Cathedral project)

    You can see why Chris Lynch was taken off the air in Christchurch, to mucb integrity. Cant have that in modern corporate "journalism"

    As someone who lived many years in Christchurch, the Cathedral is an icon and the heart of the city. Cathedral square was also centre of the city with a bunch of cinemas and bars located around it. I think it should be saved but I wish all of Christchurch pre-quake should have been saved. It has nothing to do with Ngai Tahu and if council took over the project, they would claim the land. My feeling now given the costings is demolish it but incorporate parts of it into the natural history museum of New Zealand.

    Sentimentality is what makes a culture, it's the historic buildings, the traditions, the monuments. Without those one place is just another place on a map, it has no roots, no heritage. Modern church buildings are ugly and boring. Having lived in East Auckland I regularly drove past the huge traditional Buddhist temple on Chapel Rd. How can that be built yet a national landmark can't be restored? The original cathedral took 40 years to build, there's no reason to say a rebuild couldn't take a couple of decades. It's amazing to think that some of the nicest buildings in the country were built when we had a fraction of the population and none of the heavy machinery we have now.

    As a CHCH resident, I normally always agree with Chris, but over the Cathedral I don’t agree with his sarcasm. I agree no more public money should be spent, and what was spent, should have been better monitored. I agree with him a lot has been lost with consultancy. It was the symbol for the old CHCH (literally - on stickers, etc.), and it would be nice if it continued. Listening to Chris, I am wondering where the money came from to fix the Arts Centre and the Museum (all similar buildings)? Is the Cathedral dropped because it is owned by a church organisation? Also, the Anglican Church does own a lot of land - they could sell some, to fund the Cathedral. Also, Chris is not acknowledging the Cathedral was not just a place of worship, but held secular events too, such as jazz recitals, the garden festivals, etc.. Also, Bishop Victoria was a disaster - she wanted it bowled, and her main idea was a sandy beach put in! I still remember the drawings! But at this stage, I am mainly wanting to know who is funding the Museum’s rebuild, and who funded the Arts Centre rebuild? If they were saved, why not the Cathedral?

      They should have made sure all those that wanted it rebuilt had the money to complete it before giving consent for the rebuild to start. Someone at the council or in govt at the time that decision was made can not have been very bright costing tax payers and ratepayers unnecessarily.

    • @damionkeeling3103
      @damionkeeling3103 23 дня назад

      A lot of money for projects gets sucked up in paperwork and the people who do the paperwork charge a lot of money for what they do. Then if there are any problems you get revisions requiring more paperwork and consultations sucking up more money. Eventually some money actually gets spent on building.

    Why not make the remains of the cathedral structurally safe and then make it into a memorial to the earthquake and those who died?

    • @damionkeeling3103
      @damionkeeling3103 23 дня назад

      Rather large space for "just" 185 people. I don't see why they can't restore the lower part of the building and build a wooden or composite structure on top that is similar to what the old building looked like.

    The church as a business has plenty of assetts.
    Use the $ doing good. What a pleasant surprise Bishop Matthews agreed.
    Does Chch need a cathedral?
    Stabilise the remains & encase it in glass so the faithful can adore it (sarc).
    Churches need to get back to the basics of people not buildings & assetts.

    I’m not religious or originally from Christchurch. But I have been living here post quakes. I completely disagree. The cathedral is an icon. To simply destroy our heritage is gross. And if they had removed it at the start, I’m sure Chris would be the first to say it was a great loss etc. Imagine if a Māori statue or park was put in its place? Could you imagine the outcry from these two guys? You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Clearly there is bias here, a catholic is sore about the catholic cathedral being demolished and hopes the same happens to the Anglican. The cathedral is an icon, and it should be saved. If you remove the identity of a city, it will be replaced. And what by? Take a look at all the new buildings, all have Māori designs and names. This isn’t Rotorua.

  • @andrewm8610

    To be fair my recollection is that the church wanted to knock it down, but interfering 'unbelievers' took them to court and effectively forced them repair it. These busy bodies should have to pay for it. The church should have stood their ground. However, the Anglican in NZ does own enough property in NZ to leverage for some cash.

    You can never fix the square while that mess is still there. Knock it down ,truck the mess away and let the Anglican church build what they want or sell property back to the council so it can make an attraction that draws people and businesses back into the area. Time to get real.!?

    What a cringe this guy was. Nothing of value here just a mocker with a voice. The Cathedral is as much a victim of our unsustainable building situation as housing is. Get used to the idea of leaving the site fallow for a more deserving generation to arise.

    The cathedral should have been bulldozed down after the earthquake. The cathedral had been there for over a hundred years and was outdating our city. You can call me mean and Anti-religiious,but $80 million dollars is ridiculous. It would have been better to spend that much money on a fun park like disneyland which would probably cost more..it would be worth it as there is no fun parks in christchurch
