I used to see these guys a lot at CBs and SIN Club, my favorite place during its short life. They were part of that Sonic Youth, Swans, Rat at Rat R, Bag People, etc. scene. What a great time in New York music.
yeah - the SIN club, always fun attempting-2-cobble-2gether enuf equipment-2-run a decent show there, but... hadda great time tweaking noise-4-all these groups there, as well as the remarkable Ut...
i saw this band at CBGB,,[i april 86 0r 87 ]guess , after the show i was talking to the drummer . he signed a LP for a woman . then she hands it to me . told her i was not in the band . she told me i was in the band . and made me sign it . i asked the drummer for my per diem .. big laugh .
I just missed seeing "phase 1" L.S., but went to see them as many times around N.Y.C. to the end. This album is in my alltime list for sure. Play it loud enough to scare the neighbors hahhahaaa
+MarsHottentot That's a pretty accurate description of SY's trajectory. When you say "chilly American noir", are you referring to the "Bad Moon RIsing" era and songs like "Death Valley '69"? This was my first SY LP, and remains my favourite. I sort of lost interest in them in their "jam band" phase.
+KJ Farrington I saw a dance performance by Jacob's Pillow at MassMoCA. I didn't know it going in but the entirely electronic score was created by one James Lo. It was quite a score, very impressive, and eerie. I'd love to hear more.
+KJ Farrington Yeah, Live Skull definitely had the songs, they just didn't know how to feed the press, have the money or temerity for the Black Flag tour schedule SY undertook and, frankly, they didn't have that sexy, then pretty transgressive, guitar mutilation visual. I could talk all day about it, but none of it really has much or anything to do with the actual tunes. Live Skull were just as good.
Been thinking about how the band changed, and what really separates the older stuff from the newer, and it seems Marnie's role is heavily under-sung and just might be the key to the greatness of the early stuff. Story I heard was Marnie was hurt about Thalia joining and not being able to sing anymore, which was why she quit. If given the choice, I'd still take Marnie's singing as long as she was still the glue holding everything in place.
I like the debut EP better.. this album doesn't have the same element or essence.. which is common, bands change thru phases... possibly a member change after 1984. or they just sound bored on this--- in comparison to the debut EP.. it's ok but when it cam out I felt disappointed in contrast to their earlier HP L
Live skull ain't discussed enough..when it comes to 80s noise rock ..which is quite amazing considering how much energy and edge they had

Always loved Live Skull. Especially the early stuff.
The best NY noise rock act from mid 80s. "Ha Ha Ditch" y "Four" are my favorite tracks here.

Was the woman the frontman of the band?
@@adderon yo ,,,read the post ..it was a woman not Thalia ..if it was Thalia she would know wo is in her band ..ya think ?
Saw them play a tiny club in Leeds back around '85... Had a drink with them afterwards - Nice people.
10 Times better live. Saw them many times back in the day.
Thanks lots. Sheer will-power gets you in.
Way ahead of its time...

i just listened to the new (live) single *this* album is still amazing by comparison.
I saw all of Thalia's bands. Along with Uzi this was the wildest.
thalia does not feature on this album...
The Thalia phase of Live Skull is awesome, too, loved it.
this is fucking aaaawwwweeeeesssssooooommmmeeeeeeee

@@favoriteandcuriousmusic4389 probably their best, definitely their darkest.
awesome
YAY!
Sparky's riff and rhythm could have inspired Faith No More's Kindergarten in some way
Why Sonic Youth and not this band? Discuss.
+KJ Farrington I've been saying that for years!
+KJ Farrington Simple: Non-stop touring, media engagement and SST. Cannot discount the power of SST in the 80's.
+MarsHottentot SST was a force, for sure. You're probably right about the touring point.

never rated marnie's vocals and still don't otherwise excellent
