Thanks for all the info, very very useful. I don't know if it has been mentioned but it is a very good idea to carry proof of ownership documentation. A sales receipt with the relevant serial numbers etc, this is just so that the border control can verify that you aren't trafficking stolen goods or someone else's instruments.

I use good flight cases and check in my instruments when flying. I've never had a problem, and only once been asked to open a case.
would a drum kit be considered a portable?
