Honestly speaking, that's pretty much how I felt as the first battle was being built and then began in the book

Still waiting for a time I can sing this at dnd. One of my favorite writers of both music and books.
If someone sang this at me I'd be terrified
If I was seleney I would have had Griffith burn ancar as soon as he arrived at the battle. That would have caused confusion and most likely infighting. Also, it would have ended the future war right then. Hulda couldn't legally claim the throne because she was neither married to ancar or of the royal blood. Given how much ancar was disliked, the former kings loyalist would definitely have stopped her attempt.
I will say that Griffith made the right choice once the demons were summoned but I would have acted sooner and essentially bluffed the mage into doing nothing. Seeing someone that protected burst into flame beside you would discourage anyone from standing out
But if she had, Elspeth wouldn't have become the first new Herald mage!

Honestly the orders give were probably the best that could have been given. Then we also would not have the story in By the Sword. A story that was actually my first Mercedes Lackey book.
Then also wouldn't have had the promise fulfilled by Rethwellan.
@vallettapetracyneran8587 large view, everything worked out for the best. Especially considering what happens in the mage winds and mage storm trilogies with the disaster that echoed back from the past. If the war ended after the first battle, valdemar might not have sent elspeth to find a mage to teach her. That means she couldn't have helped save the k'sheyna, firesong might never have come to help darkwind, and firesong wouldn't have traveled to valdemar with elspeth. Also, if the war ended quickly, karse would never have had the motivation to ally with valedmar, meaning karal wouldn't have been able to become the necessary channel to save the world
So many new songs, some I've heard some not. XD

It is a revenge song! It’s from “arrows fall” from a trilogy from the Valdemar series.
It’s a series of magic, and centers around a kingdom that has a shield against magic users. So they use “mindmagics” to protect their kingdom. I’d start with this series, “the collegium chronicles,” “it takes a thief,” or “the last herald mage series.”

Probably because it was published by Firebird Arts, which is tiny and apparently still sells cassette tapes.

What does Herald mean in this song?
read the books of valdemar by Mercedes lackey if you want to know. I recommend starting with the arrows trilogy: arrows of the queen, arrows flight, and arrows fall.
If you haven't already seen the books, a Herald is someone who has a mental link (usually telepathic, sometimes empathy)to what looks like a white horse with blue eyes and silver hooves, known as a companion, and always wear a white uniform, (trainees wear grey) Most heralds have some form of "mind magic" strong telepathy, or empathy or Firestarters, various forms of telekinetics, and so on. They act as ambassadors, judges, peace keepers, diplomats and at need spy's or warcleaders. Some can even assist Healers.All are brave, honest and courageous. By valdemaren law the reigning monarch and hair must also be Heralds You could also start with The Collegium Chronicles set a few centuries earlier, but in the same place.
