The 2nd movement is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.
Yeah, me too. It feels like an angel was playing the guitar. This inspiring and romantic movement makes me think of the color red, but associated with Valentine’s Day. 💘
I associate it with my dear, late friend Elaine, who committed suicide some 25 years ago. It breaks me up every time _ is hould have been a better friend and seen that she was suffering, and done something useful about it.
But I didn't. So, I weep for her every time.
So are so right.
Played this Largo 2nd movement Lute concerto in D Major as my wedding march and the moment it started, I burst into uncontrollable tears, (overwhelmed with joy, marrying the man I love) The song has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it as a kid in the 70s. I knew the song was going to be significant to me back then but wasn't the type of girl who dreamed of my wedding... (I'm a bonafide Tomboy) but even Tomboys can be hopelessly romantic... I am so grateful for music like this, it literally feeds the soul as well as contributes to beautiful memories. Vivaldi is a master at conjuring up emotions. ♥
To me Antonio Vivaldi is the most comprehensive and talented composer ever existed.
He is able put glorious tunes into almost every instrument and voice.
To simply put His tunes are just very very musical, the melody the flow, the highs and lows it just marriages together effortlessly…:
Kudos to Antonio to bring such joy to the world for every generations to come.
When I was a child Sesame Street had a little segment where this was playing to a clip of a flower growing through the cement with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background it blew my mind.

I think the second movement of this wonderful concerto is the most beautiful melody I've ever heard, the arrangement is gorgeous. I want this piece to be the last music I hear before I die. I love Vivaldi.
The 2nd movement makes me think of death, too. It is such a profound expression of the bittersweet nature of life...incredible beauty and incredible sorrow intertwined and inseparable. The music expresses the truth of life without words. Amazing.

@@patrickmcdermott6285 Actually I love it enough to have five copies, two analog, which it where I play it when I want to listen to it. If you tried to understand my comment it is about the jarring nature of ads and breaks in classical music at all, which is why you don’t use this platform to listen to it, payed or not because in. Addition the sound quality is garbage.
I pay like 6$/month and I always forget there are people struggling with ads.
For whatever indiscernible reason , the second movement of this piece is my very favorite piece of music ever written. It makes me recognize the depth of beauty in this world, and unafraid of death (!) Pretty melodramatic, but true

The fact that this piece was used in the movie The Cowboys makes this piece so much more enjoyable for me.
The second movement was used in the movie a little romance back in 1979. I heard it back then and it stayed deep in my heart and soul for good
I remember that scene. It was Robert Carradines character who was "playing" the song. That was where I first heard this incredible piece of music!
I'd say that the 2nd movement is about the greatest piece of classical music ever written for guitar. Even if it wasn't written specifically for guitar, let's just concede that it should have been.

Did anybody know Vivaldi was a Catholic priest? Unfortunately he wasn't able to say Mass often as he should due in part to his asthma. It was often said of him if he wasn't playing his violin or teaching he said his rosary and breviary often. He had to get a dispensation for limiting his priestly duties due to his health. He was known all over Venice as 'il Prete Rosso', or 'the Redhead Priest' on account of his hair and sense of humor. He did manage to however use his musical and spiritual talents at the girls' boarding school and orphanage called il Ospedale della Pieta by teaching music, religious instruction, offer spiritual counsel, etc He coordinated and organized fundraisers for the school by holding concerts and other performances done by the pupils he taught, which was quite unusual for its time considering girls and women weren't allowed in most churches as choristers or even as musicians, so it wasn't all that surprising to be well-received by one audience and not so accepted elsewhere. In some cases the girls were often not allowed to be seen but heard usually by having them perform either in the back of the sanctuary and behind a grille or curtained partition above the worshipers below. I'm sure it took a little arm-twisting and a little diplomatic tact on Vivaldi's part to convince the powers that be to have him and his all-female performers to perform, though. One mayor asks, "Did you say you have FEMALES performing this work, Padre Vivaldi?" And Vivaldi says with a smile, "Si, Signore Maggiore! Bellissama cantori con carissima voci!" ('Yes, Lord Mayor. Beautiful singers with lovely voices! The proceeds of the concerts go to support their schooling too!") I'm sure he made some of these people an offer they couldn't refuse like arranging a special Mass in thanksgiving from being spared a massive earthquake "You drive a hard bargain, Padre," says the lord mayor as he convinces the city council to have the concert performed by young girls and women! LOL
St. Philip Neri, founder of the Oratorian Fathers and Brothers was a close friend of composer Palestrina and had him and his choir entertain Neri's guests with some of his latest sacred works, including seasonal motets and Masses. Palestrina did a series of detailed musical narratives for various seasons and feasts of the Church calendar called 'oratorios' using Biblical stories and old devotional prayers and commentary on the topic as if influenced by ancient Greco-Roman dramas and plays, including that of the chorus of performers and the narrator of the said story. These were known as 'mystery plays' because they taught the common people stories taken from the Bible or on the lives of the Saints in ways they could understand and in some ways relate to and perhaps apply such morals and values to their daily lives and pass them onto their children and so forth.

Yes, I did a little bit of research not much admittedly but I do know he was known as the Red Priest. I also he ran a music school where he would tutor young ladies in music and would perform concerts but they had to be hidden on a balcony in a convent or something like that. Not sure if what I'm writing is accurate please Google and let me know if I'm wrong. It's been a few years I did my research.
@@JerryShelby Some of it I read from a few books and my late parents, who were classically-trained musicians, knew some stuff. One of my fondest memories about classical composers doing variations of sacred works and devotional music came from my mother, who was a paid soprano soloist in a church choir. As a case in point, many composers of various faiths had set the prayers, hymns and anthems used in the Mass for many centuries, starting with chants to even classic and contemporary styles. Even the likes of JS Bach (who was a Pietist Lutheran); Britten and Vaughan Williams (who were Anglicans); Rachmaninoff, Bortniansky, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Stravinsky (were Russian Orthodox); Leonard Stern (a Messianic Jew) composed a Mass. They were using this medium to express their spirituality and relationship with God as they saw God. My late mother (she converted the the Catholic faith when she married my dad and was also very ecumenically-minded) used to tell me, "If you want to get a full grasp and understanding of the overall history of the Church and her teachings in a nutshell, it comes from one major source and that is in the Mass...past, present and the future!"
@@Theresabrown1805 Teresa, he didn't actually run a school of music, but actually taught music at a girls' school in his hometown of Venice. It was called il Ospedale di Pieta (or Hospital of Mercy) and functioned also as an orphanage and boarding school for foundlings (I'm sure as a priest there were at least a few youngsters in the school Vivaldi administered the sacraments of the Church such as baptism, preparing them for their first communion, confession, etc) young girls and women, who were either abandoned by parents or unwed parents who couldn't financially or emotionally support them and/or furnish a dowry for their daughters, sisters, etc. The school also taught their pupils how to become self-supporting in the world and picking up a few trades, household and personal survival skills, even some healthcare and proper hygiene, etc so when the time for them to leave the school, they didn't feel completely socially vulnerable or naive.

First movement - about as close to an American folk theme as a classical piece can get.
Second movement - background music in search of a movie or a TV show.
Third movement - one of the most underrated classical pieces in the world.

The second movement is played along the film a little romance (1979) that's when i heard it for the first Time. I love it. I was a teen in '79 and i fell deeply in love with the film and the beauty of the melody

The second movement is so addicting. Per to the wiki page for this piece, this movement is “reflective meditation”. I’d like to add to it: it is a reflective meditation under the sun. Because it is sunshine and you will feel it without a doubt especially here 4:10! It is simply the best uplifting melody and a pure joy to listen to!
My prayers are my son will play this at his senior recital at pepperdine.

The middle of this movement is so modern sounding. It's really one of the classical pieces that foretold contemporary music. Vivaldi is one of my favorites and even though I've never read it, I think he was a big influence on Mozart.

Just recently lost my grandfather. One of the last times I saw him, I played the middle piece for him, he loved it.

Yes, that was the connection I found. Vivaldi to J.S. Bach to J.C. Bach to W.A. Mozart. The other person who I maintained influenced Mozart with my very remedial knowledge of classical music was Bach. And of course I found Mozart had studied with J.C. Bach and have since listened to some of 'The London Sketchbook'. I'm a guitar player (non-classical) even though I LOVE classical music. I find it very interesting to see some connections to contemporary music in classical music, like when Beethoven 'invented' ragtime in the 'Grosse Fugue'. I find myself constantly astounded by how the great composers defied the norms of the times. It is equally astounding how they could martial incredible resources to bring their works to life.
The second movement was used to great effect in the 1979 film a Little romance starring Laurence Olivier and Diane Lane as well as Sally kellerman.
Love the whole piece but have to say the second movement is pure magic. Wonderful!

100% the first rock star
A movement of extreme beauty bookended by two movements of funky. It doesn't get any better than this. I think of Handel and Bach as technically superior to him, but he's better at evoking emotions. Those robotic German engineers just can't quite do it as well.
It seems like everyone loves the 2nd Movement, but I will be the odd one out and say that the 3rd Movement is my favourite.
I find it hard to decide between the first and third myself but one thing I do know is that the second movement is my least favorite.

When I was a child, many, many, many decades ago, the 2nd movement was used in an
advertisement on TV. (It may have been for insurance.) A mare was watching her foals playing in
a field. They were filmed in slo-motion, and at that time, it was the most beautiful, and
moving piece of film and music, I had ever seen. I want this played, when I am on
my deathbed, reminiscent of Edward G. Robinson in ‘Soylent Green’.
It was also used with a sunflower during a sun shower on Sesame street when i was a child.

Everyone Seems to really like 3:50. Anyone want to know what the name of it is? It's called Vivaldi's lute. About a year ago, I listened to an album that used songs for therapy, and this song was on that album. After this one came Vivaldi's horns, another great piece
They named it like that, but I think it does not have that name officialy. It's simply as the video says: the 2nd movement from this concert.

I listen to Valvaldi 2nd movement guitar when I am painting a masterpiece in my studio. It reminds me of nature and soothing sound calms my spirit and allows me to be the master artist that I am. And my work shows it!
When I listen to Vivaldi’s Largo from Lute Concerto in D, RV 93, I paint shades of red associated with love and Valentine’s Day.

There used to be a nature program in the 80's about two guys that would walk trails and ID plants and animals. The second movement would play as the intro to the show and I used to love it. Does anyone know the name of this show. I have been trying to remember what it was for years now and why I love this piece so much.

This will probably sound like heresy but playing the Largo section with quarter notes at 46 bpm or slightly slower works better for me. Most people play it adagio with an eighth note pulse (with quarter notes around 30 bpm) which probably works better with strings as a contrast to the first movement. I only perform the second movement unaccompanied as a stand alone piece.

I think this is actually a lute concerto transcribed for guitar, still lovely though. Kind of sad that he never actually wrote officially for guitar in mind..

True the guitar is such an underrated tone instrument in an orchestra but if it weren't for Andres Segovia it would been relegated as secondary and not on par with other string instruments such as the violin.

The guitar solo can barely be heard against the massive strings in the beautiful second movement. The guitar part is important, the held chords are very much background.
