Couldn’t agree more Tim. Forward facing sonar just gets you in the right spot and depth. I hardly see fish eat my bait but it saves so much time for us weekend warriors for sure! Thx for the video🤙
so insane what we’re doing to catch a bass. as cool as it is to watch, i do think it erodes so much of what it means to go fishing. sticking to my 2D for now
I mean it depends why you go. I wouldn’t go fish offshore without it because it’s kind of boring to fish in the middle of the lake at 30 feet without know if anything even is there. I’d just fish shallow all the time without
People love to hate on the forward facing sonars. I remember people hating on side imaging and down imaging went it first came out as well. I don't understand the hate myself. Just because u can see the fish, doesn't mean u can catch those fish! Anyways great video guys, and ignore the haters
They sure do but we've been through many technologies, lures, etc... that were supposed to ruin fishing. Fish are amazing and they constantly adapt. Thanks for the support!
I havent bought any live active style sonar yet because of a few things i thought would be an issue. The main issue i saw was once you find structure/fish it would be hard to continuously see the fish depending on boat movement by the angler or the elements. This tech i think is huge where it will keep locked onto the fish. Thanks for sharing Tim!
Not sure if you made a video on setting up mega live yet but if you haven't it would be great cause it looks like you got it down its very clean and clear I'm still having to much trouble setting up to where it looks clear.
Tim, That"s sure a load hanging off the MinnKota and is great technology but I'll just stick with a basic FFS transducer on a Fortrex. You and Matt do an excellent job of explaining and showing how things are done.
Hey Tim, I know this is a topic of this video but I couldn't sleep last night So at 5:00 AM I decided to go fishing before work. It was windy nasty dark but I got there couldn't get nothing on a jig Then busted out the Drop shot with About a 2' long weight Leader And A 4" ringworm. And I caught 3 and about 30 minutes really nice ones around 2\3lbs in a Really really high pressured part of My home lake
I left out this part you always saying you're looking for new ideas for videos well I know you've done night fishing videos but have you done a winter night fishing video?
As a garmin guy, even I have to admit that the target lock system offers a real advantage that the other companies don’t. Mega live imaging looks way better than it did when it first came out I still think that livescope plus is the best imaging, and I’m a huge fan of garmin electronics / trolling motor. Just had too many reliability issues with my humminbird stuff unfortunately. That said, still have a 360 because nobody offer that product besides humminbird yet.
Great video Tim! I'm running MK Ultrex w/ Humminbird units front and back, BUT I have Garmin LiveScope in front. Since I'm mostly a Humminbird boat, can Target Lock be used to control the Garmin unit?? Thanks for all you do...
This is exactly what I was looking for. I am about to purchase a Ultrex quest, and new to SI. My HUGE concern was the Mega Live SI transducer on the TM, and how the image would be as I navigate the shoreline fishing for musky. My only downer on the Targetlock, is having that "extra" turrett or arm on the TM. As a beginner, would you recommend starting out with the Mega Live on the TM? then ramp up/ add Target lock later? Any recommendations or any other musky fisherman thoughts? Thanks!!!!!
I have the same HB setup and love it. Question: When you see an interesting object and want to target lock on to it, do you use the touch screen to highlight it, then hit the target lock butto, and then do you need to exit out of it and the target lock will stay on it? Have you had any issues wihen the Minnkota steer is selected, the connection is dropped and you have to reengage it? This seems to happen to me often. HB support has a white paper on this issue and hopefully a patch is coming to fix it. Finally, i am still learning to differentiate between crappie and gizzard shad. I would have thought the ball of fish you highlighted would be gizzard shad, not crappie.......how do you determine between the two? So glad you have the HB network and share this type of video with us. Now, maybe you can also do a video on how you apply the new Lakemaster VX premium card to help in your fishing. Thanks Tim.
Hey, Tim. I really appreciate all you and Matt do! It's that the issue I have with FFS is that (IMO) it takes fish finding to a level that feels contrary to the spirit and "sport" of fishing. I supposed one could argue the same for traditional sonar but still, FFS is something else, entirely. 1. Yes Down/Side scan are quite advanced but really aren't so dissimilar to traditional sonar. It really just made it easier to distinguish cover because it made a more human-visible display than traditional. The point being that you could find likely areas where fish might be, or find schools of fish that may or may not have moved, but you still had to locate them by trial and error. Just because you saw cover doesn't mean there are fish on that cover. 2. Spot lock, again, is just a more convenient way to do something we've always done. It just got rid of the hassle of having to deploy one or two anchor lines out, threatening to tangle us up when we're fighting a fish. 3. Even i-Pilot is the same deal, it just made following a path or contour less of a manual process. FFS literally gives you the ability to decide whether to fish an area or target base on whether there are fish visibly there. You can just jump around from waypoint to waypoint being like, "Nope... Nope... Nope... Ah, there they are." Yes, you still have to figure if they want to bite, and what they want to feed on but you've eliminated the hardest part of fish, actually finding the fish. To me, there are 3 primary challenges to fishing: 1. Finding high percentage locations; 2. Finding out if there are fish at those locations; 3. Figuring out what the fish want to eat. With FFS, you've eliminated 1/3 of the process. Beyond my feelings about the sport of fishing, there is the concern for the health of the fisheries and the quality of fish to catch. He's a bit of curmudgeon, sometimes but Randy Blaukat does make some good points, on this topic. He just talked about how he met anglers at the ramps bragging about how many crappie they catch with FFS; bringing home 2 man limits (60 fish) 5 times a week in like 2 hrs worth of work, each day. When he asked them what they did with all those fish (because no one can eat 1200 crappies in a month) they said they just give them to friends and family. They also said that because of FFS, they were only keeping bigger crappie because they didn't need to worry about making the limit. Randy went on to speak of encounters he's had with fishermen that are only keeping trophy size walleye/saugeye because they could just follow schools around the lake. Yes, these are anecdotes (and the average fisherman is probably only getting 1 or 2 days a week, max, on the water) but it speaks to the risk that may be associated with FFS as it applies to sustainability, even if we're only talking about sustainability of fish quality and not quantity. Now, since, for the most part, bass fisherman practice catch and release, it's hard to say if FFS would have the same possible impact as with crappie/walleye/saugeye but I would put money on it making bass fishing more difficult, overall, as bass become more pressured because they can't hide as well. Anyway, sorry for the novel.
1. FFS IS traditional sonar as well. It's just a software function for the most part. 2. You can jump around waypoint to waypoint going "nope...nope...nope...aha!" with regular sonar (not even DI/SI) 3. Spot lock is way more of an advantage than FFS because it actually does something for you. FFS you have to use it yourself to find the fish. And if the fish are hugging the bottom? It's worth no more than regular sonar. 4. iPilot is the same as spot lock. 5. G-Man said it best. Randy is an idiot. He's sitting there having won millions of dollars fishing and refuses to adapt and would rather whine about it. He is technologically impaired but he knows that if he mentions livescope that he will get more views and thus generate more revenue. Given that his best video has made like $500 for him, he has to put out clickbait because he can't make money fishing tournaments anymore.
@@fishinfrenzy2544 I meaaannnn, I literally alluded to the fact that I'm not a huge fan of his but whatever. ...but that's kind of why I watch his videos sometimes. It doesn't hurt to hear opinions that aren't the same as yours.
As many people have responded on his videos on the topic, just finding them doesn’t make them bite, in fact many people are telling Randy that FFS is driving fish away from them or shutting them down. Anyone with any common sense that has been around at least a couple of decades can tell you that ANY sonar can and does affect fish, even if we manage to catch a few.
What length trolling motor shaft is the Targetlock working with? if it’s a 60 inch I was curious how it worked. According to Humminbird they don’t recommend it because people using a 60 inch trolling motor are typically in more chop. Curious your experience thx
