  • The Western Front Association is very excited to announce that it is partnering with the team at Battle Guide Virtual Tours to present a series of 'interactive Battlefield Tours' exclusively for WFA members.
The Tours use the very latest technology to blend traditional archive material, historic photography and film, contemporary mapping and veteran testimony with modern-day films and images. Zoom over today's battlefield as it gradually transforms into the landscape of 100 years ago. 'Go over the top' whilst listening to accounts from the men who did. Want to see where Grandad fought? Not a problem - it's interactive so we can take a quick detour to have a look.
We will initially be bringing you a series of six tours, covering war on the Western Front and elsewhere from 1914 to 1918. These will run from early-January, fortnightly through to mid-March. Each tour will last approximately one hour and will be led by experienced battlefield guides. Places on the interactive Tours will be strictly limited and are available only to members of The Western Front Association. Recordings of these tours will be available for WFA members to subsequently watch 'on demand'.
Details of the tours and how to sign up for them will be announced in forthcoming issues of Trench Lines and of course on the association's website (www.westernfrontassociation.com)

Very impressive combination of modern technology with history. It's certainly given me food for thought. I wish you the greatest sucess with this fantastic initiative.

When I was growing up all we were taught was "lions led by donkeys". I'm fascinated by the high quality historical scholarship I can now tap into with a browser. Thank you to the Western Front Association for all your work and sharing it with us.

As someone who has never been able to go on a Western Front battlefield tour this looks fascinating.

This will be superb for those interested in the subject or for educational purposes who cannot experience a field tour for what ever reason...coupled with the links to archive photographs and the overview provides real context all from from the human perspective on both sides of the line, and beneath them. Brilliant.

The talking head should be located in the bottom right of the screen. That way he at least appears to be looking toward the audience. The way things are, he seems to be looking away from us and averting his eyes, which is somewhat offputting.

Having made a couple of videos, I find it's very hard to make oneself look at the camera rather than one's own image on the monitor.
