This makes me want to really learn how to play. I have been dilly dallying on piano for as long as I could remember but I can't play anything like this
Thank you Jeff - I've played piano (at a mediocre level) for years, and wanted to know the 'secrets' to these voicings since I was listening to hip-hop back in the mid 90s. You clearly have an exceptional ear and the way you break the theory down for us mere mortals is second to none. Thanks again, brother.
I just fell over this video, I don't play piano at all, don't even play anything, but I'm in awe and now I want to learn more about neo-soul piano chords. Got yourself a new sub.... Well done
Though a Bass player, and taking up on the keyboard, you make it very easy to understand what you are doing, with purpose and suggestions so that people don't have to chase fingers around the board in wonder. Thanks...Theory is king!!
THANK YOU! Surprising difficult trying to find a succinct, yet thorough explanation of the jazzy ideas behind "neo-soul." The music theory behind jazz is crucial and your videos satisfy that need. A lot of videos out there are littered with abrupt playing and unfocused teaching. Sure, this is youtube, but in this case beggars CAN be choosers, and we choose you Jeff - thanks again!
I have NO clue what you're saying about the chords. But I love how this sounds. I'm just trying to learn how to play the keyboard, but it's tough. I hope I can one day make amazing sounds like this.
It's been 2 years since you made this comment, are you still playing? Have you achieved what you were hoping for in this comment? Curious to see what happened.
I definitely haven't learned piano chords. I don't have a keyboard to practice on. I had also been depressed, and lost mobility in limbs randomly last year, and then got it back. So it's been an uphill battle. I've spent years learning ukulele. Starting guitar lessons soon. But, I have learned a bit more about some chords, starting to learn music theory. I'm trying to take the time to learn the things I care about, now. Maybe in another 3 years I'll be more knowledgeable!
I watched this months ago and barely had a clue what you were talking about. 3 mins in to this again, i'm blown away, bring a whole new perspective to me. thanks
This also kind of sounds like the progression in Anderson Paak's "Without You" feat. Rapsody. Extremely grateful for these videos! As a beginner with a little musical theory from four years in secondary school, your explanations help me understand the rules applied to piano!
Thanks for all videos you made, I'm Learning jazz in a french conservatory and all you say serve me every day, Sad there's no french man like you (It's difficult to understand all words you say) I like very well the fact that you explain with ear and after you write what you make earing to you, and you are very brillant because you know things very complicated but you know how make them becoming easy to understand ! Pleasure to follow you !
I think you did one of the best jobs I have seen explaining your point. I did not have to rewind the video 10,000 times, I only paused it a few times to get the progression down. Great job!
Yahtzee! I like to turn all heptatonic scales into chords and arpeggios, that's 413 scales and chords (w/ max major 3rd leaps) For example, E Phrygian Chord Em11(b9)(b13) E,G,B,D,F,A,C,(E) There's much to learn. (59 scales x 7 modes)
love the use of 2ndary dominants. I decided to play these as v v messy block chords on my left hand (e.g. Gm9 became F,G,A,Bb,D) , so I could solo on my right hand - ended up sounding v nice, if a bit muddy
This is the best piano lesson teacher I've ever seen on RUclips. I'm not even kidding. LOVE the fact you explain the WHY. Brilliant, thank you so much!
I have no idea of music composition and arrangement and virtually everything you discussed went over my head - BUT I appreciate how it all comes together and respect your knowledge bro
I love those chords, but I think this video lesson is still too advanced for me being a novice. Guess I'll check out your other videos! Big thumbs up to your hard work and efforts!

Glad to see how successful you're doing, Jeff. Will never forget the amazing teachings you gave Ben and me during my first semester Jazz combo at UMass. KEEP ON KILLING IT, BUDDY!
Just about got this now after sessioning it last night for a few hours, and now for about an hour at lunch, including the little turnaround/run down at the end of the two bar pattern. Amazing how quickly you can progress, also very annoying that I haven't been doing this the last 20 or so years...
Most clear and direct video on practical modern music learning I've seen in a long time. Love the pace and general demeanor. Liked, subscrided and hit the bell. Thanks!
I'm glad that I'm familiar with most if not all of the chord types represented in the video. I guess I was blessed to have had a father who loved listening to Miles, Trane, Horace Silver, Donald Byrd and Hugh Masekela. As always excellent presentation Jeff. Thx 4 what you do many blessings 2 u

As a guitar player, I find your approach very intuitive and really sensible. Despite the limited range of tones you can play at a time, it still sounds beautifully on an acoustic ! You sure made me strech those fingers for the 11th chord, though :D
very nice playing and great explanation I noticed that the chords written are 9sbut you refer to 7s just wanted to point that out in case someone slow like me gets confused as well. thanks for the cool information.
Bubble Gum Drop Out when you use a 9 chord, the b7 is assumed. This is because the 7 is an important note like the 3rd - since the 7 can massively change the chord's tonality. A 9 chord without the 7th would be notated as add9 (C E G D), and a 9 chord with no 7rd or 3rd would be a sus2 (C D G). The same goes for other chords - 11 assumes the 7 and 9, and so on.
Havok he's referring to what's written on the screen. Jeff says 7 screen says 9. I also got a little off track but stuck with the 9s. Has nothing to do with what you said.

Omitting the 5th of the Db and Eb major 9th chords worked really well here!
The 5th is often left out in jazz and jazz influenced music so all the extended tones are accentuated.
