I love the way you made this so clear. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this. It's been 40 years since I've seen or heard someone teach on the gifts of the spirit. I just might have to come visit you and your church soon. I live near El Paso, so it is a nice little day trip. Thanks, Pastor Mark.
Love being able to follow along with the spiritual gifts book you wrote Pastor Mark, thank you! Super appreciate your view on tongues as well, so needed
Thank you for this explanation Pastor Mark. I have had the feeling that I wasn't good enough or that God wanted me to do something more in order for me to be blessed with this specific gift. I've had teachers say that you not speaking to God if you're not speaking in tongues ? I have read these passages and my interpretation was as you have preached it. However, they lead me to believe different.
This has always been difficult to digest for me. I have seen so many people say they were blessed with the gift but admitted they were lying because they wanted to believe they had it. The Baptist church (I am not Baptist) even goes as far to say this language was lost and was angel exclusive. I just find it difficult to process as a Christian when there are so many 3rd party experiences. I have been submerged and truly active in my churches all my life. I saw God working in every area. However... thus area has always appeared to be self desperation. I know that may upset many, but this is something I have pursued and researched for a long time. I can sound like I have the gift, and feel a high... but it's just not it. Many denominations don't believe in it too. Many pentecostal churches have also abused it. It's just too subjective in my opinion. Not saying I am right, just... sad
Good morning sir. You are the first person I have ever heard preach about the use of tongues while trying to keep it in a biblical context. The folks I have heard always say it's for everyone, and they all shout it out during the church service with many people shouting in tongues jumping around and interpreter to be found. This naturally turns me off. Though I am not a cessationist, I have a hard time following anyone with such an obvious abuse of their gift.
Its not a gift some get some don't.. I believe. Well 63 years old 55y in the lord He has never told me it was only for some. You read Luke 11:13 just do what He said there. If you want to believe its a gift some get some don't then maybe you don't have the "GIFT" of the holy Spirit as Peter said after they will all 120+ filled with the holy Spirit. Yet he did say repent be baptized in Christ you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. Did not they ask some "have you received the gift of the holy Spirit? WOW How wondaful for all of them .. they all got that gift. I was 15-16 when to this bible study with my mom and one night they asked if I wanted the holy Spirit. See they would say if we say anything that is not in the word of God do not believe us. So I said yes but no really sure what I was saying yes to. I just want anything God gives. So I sat in this chair and he reads only the verse about the holy Spirit and asks me again if I wanted it I say yes. He prays one of the shortest prayers I have ever heard then stops says "that's it you got it". See they just believed if GOD said it you don't have to keep asking begging ..if God said it you know He will do it. No one said one word. I got up went to sit down and BAM tongues just came out. I have always seen it happen like that. When you doubt let not that man think he will get anything from God. Paul I speak in tongues more then you all. "I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification."
I used to feel that way as well. Still don’t quite get the public way of speaking in tongues but have definitely learned the personal way. Pastor Robert Morris also has a sermon concerning this you would find interesting as well
No offense (we know that word huh) when you see someone spirit field vs those that are not its night and day. There is always something missing. Sorry but read LUKE 11 13 you will speak in tongues. Christ said we will cast out demons we will speak in new tongues. Some believe some do not and some make the rules as to why you do or don't. I was 15 I asked according to luke 11 13 and they read only what the bible said then asked if I wanted the holy Spirit I said yes he prayed then just stopped and said "thats it you got it". Nothing happened. I got up went to sit down and BAM tongues just came out. You ask the Father according to LUKE 11 13 and then THANK HIM for giving it because HE can not lie and you WILL speak in tongues. So its NOT what I say or this man. You read Luke 11 13 you read Acts.. you just do what HE said not me or anyone else. Oh ITS AWESOME! PRAISE GOD GLORY TO JESUS.. a JOY you never had a peace you never knew.. its ALWAYS there just ask and BELIEVE. IF you doubt let not that man think he will get anything from God. If you say NOPE not all speak in tongues....GOD will NEVER go against your will. So this man of God will answer to GOD for what he says and does not say.
Incorrect, you have be filled with the Spirit in order to speak in tongues, actually speaking in tongues (your private prayer language) is the evidence that you actually are filled with the Spirit. To say otherwise causes confusion to what being filled with the Spirit is. Now, this does not mean tongues is the reason for being filled, rather tongues just shows you and others around you that you are filled with the Spirit as shown to us throughout the entire book of Acts! There is also two kinds of tongues, the one you receive when yiu are filled with the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues on 1 Cor. Which is what yiu are speaking about.
So if you don’t speak in tongues you aren’t saved? Since there’s no evidence the Holy Spirit dwells in you, which is what happens when you are baptized into the body of Christ?
@@hubb1115 you said speaking in tongues is evidence you “actually are filled with the Spirit”. So are you implying that if you don’t speak in tongues you aren’t “actually filled with the Spirit”?
Bryce S. Yes, that is what the Bible teaches. By the way filled with the Spirit is how the book of Acts puts it, it is otherwise known today as “being baptized in the Holy Spirit” same thing. Tongues is the evidence that yiu are filled with th Holy Spirit. Once you are saved you have the Holy Spirit, live inside of you, then immediately after that it should be filled with the Spirit of God, however even if you are not people can be and should be afterward. Being filled with the Spirit of God is not the same thing as being saved and have the Holy Spirit living side of you once yiu are saved, it is a separate second experience which should be immediate after salvation but it’s not always the case in today’s day and age unlike I like the book of Acts. it is shown that you are filled when you are speaking in tongues which is the evidence that you are. There’s nothing more I can say on this matter that can help on her by typing, so if you respond again I apologize if I don’t respond since the only thing I can say to you after this is go back and read the book of acts! God bless you
@@hubb1115 Being filled with the Holy Spirit can result in the gift of tongues, but nowhere does scripture indicate it will happen with 100% certainty. In fact there are multiple gifts of the spirit, and different people can receive different gifts. Secondly, by saying someone does not have the holt spirit indwelt in them, you are asserting they are not saved. Romans 8:9 “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
This is the best and clearest explanation of the spiritual gifts of tongues/languages that I have heard to date. Thank you, Pastor Mark Driscoll!

I was listening to Tom Schreiner on the spiritual gifts and Mark Driscoll popped up so was confused!
Paul cautions against having no interpreter..

Interpretting can be proven to have ceased. Follows that tongues have ceased.
I believe in Cessationism so I disagree with you but I liked your explanation!
