- Hi Guys...in Todays video, I am sharing with you about the culture shocks that I have so far encountered since moving to Germany. I am sure many of you have encountered some cultural differences since moving abroad and can relate with some of mine. I hope you find this video entertaining.
Having lived in Europe for a long time,I can only say a few...
:Don't convert money, you will go nuts..when buying things,if you convert to Kenya shillings, you will not buy anything..
:Not everyone is against blacks .. sometimes we think we are being subjected to racism, but that's not the case ..they actually admire us
:Be confident,we are so lucky that our English is UK,anyone speaking English in a non speaking country is highly regarded..I have met people who sing songs in English, but have no clue what they are singing about
:Be you,and don't settle for less..most blacks have an infiriority complex, they think all they can do is clean..your parents didn't send you to school to clean in Europe.. follow your career path
:Be confident..be confident
:Not everyone is a racist, remove racism from your mind
I love this 100%. Hope to travel to France soon!
Wow! That for the pointers Mercy. I try not to see everything as an act of racism. I have met very good and helpful people around here
Haki si you invite us
So the people who clean are animals?
I agree 💯
The toilet part, you can grab an espresso and use the toilet for free. What I used to do is I would go to Starbucks or MacDonalds with my laptop and get a latte or buy something and stay their the whole afternoon whilst coding or doing my uni stuff. I would charge my laptop, phone and use their WiFi and toilets because of course I'm a customer.
The same with football. When starting I couldn't afford Sky subscription so I would go to betting shops, make a one euro bet and stay the whole evening watching matches. (It also paid to be funny and engage customers, making friends). I ended up getting a few free bets when owners realised I kept customers engaged and motivated to do live bets. I knew they enjoyed my presence when I would go to a betting shop and they ask where have you been? We missed you! and stuff like that.
Do a video about questions you were asked at embassy interview
Yap, I sure will...
Africans we have ''Ubuntu'' Humanity that you can never find in any other societies around the worl.
I can imagine how u were struggling to lift your luggage but someone keeps on staring at u
Absolutely...it is unmatched
Germans are generally very well-mannered actually. But there’s a major problem which you come to understand when you’ve lived in the country for a while. Some people despise black people and treat them differently - the key word being _some._ Other people aren’t openly prejudiced against blacks - like the one or two ladies Angie mentioned at the hotel.
True
Been watching your Germany videos religiously. I'm eagerly waiting for the breakdown of how much one needs to get to Germany using the channel you used. Getting a language school, and the cost for that, air tickets, how much pocket money, etc. Thanks for your content.
Germany is a strict country my dear. All you have to do is follow the rules like '' please, sorry, i had no idea, thanks alot etc. Lateness is not allowed in Germany! I once missed my driving test because i came 3 minutes late to the examination room, i went back home and i had to book my test again and paid twice.
Hi angie, I live in Germany also (4-years now) and have been to Duisburg a few times - really quiet city. The pandemic has made many things really boring n people now avoid each other over fear of infection. For the adaptor, you can get really good and cheap ones from amazon.
Most young people speak english, but naturally prefer their language. Just enjoy the experience n try to network as much as possible. Here, 12am is 12am; not 12:01am or 11:59pm.
Woa! I now clearly understand
Hi Angie, glad to see you in Europe.
You'll notice that there is alot of precision. If someone says it's 12am it's 12am no later. So you may have adjust from our flexible culture in Africa.
Good luck
Yes dear, I have to learn fast 😅
Wow so many different experiences in just a few days! Just treat it as an adventure and have fun with both the good and not so good. I'm sure you'll soon adjust and be more relaxed🤗
Absolutely... love am having fun with it
I can relate. I think most people who immigrated to Diaspora have so much to tell 🤷🏻♂️, first few months or years won’t be easy
Very true...
Am kanyan living in germany but life in Germany is not easy first because of language in . First one have to learn germany language and speak its well. Secondly the weather is boring when i compare with kenya. Infact for me kenya tuko poa na kila kitu
What.shocked mostly in Denmark the first few days was not seeing people outside. Like in the neighborhood people are allot inside compared to Africa. And also how people are very reserved and don’t do much small talk. Here in Denmark it’s also very very difficult to make friends with the Danes. But looking forward to hear about your experience. I could visit one day and you could show me around. Which part of Germany are you? As Germany is a huge country
Most welcome Milly, I am in Duisburg. I would be glad to show you around
I totaly understand where you're coming from... this culture shock is very real. I used to convert money into kenyan shillings too, and it always looked so expensive. Nowadays am much better, but i have never stopped converting🤫🙈🙊. All the best gal and keep on winning 🌷❤🙏🇰🇪🇰🇪
Aggie, you can always go to a supermarket for toilet like here in USA, all supermarkets have toilets.
A very interesting video. Unfortunately I’ve never heard anyone speak English with an Kenyan accent and about 20% of what you were saying was lost for me. Good luck in Germany.
Thanks Hans
No:1. I think me I give up with all this culture shocks 🙌😂. Any way they say if you go to “Rome” you do asap.
I tell you 😂😂😂
Very interesting, always looking forward to deine videos
Thanks Lynette...😃
Thanks Angie 😘.

You are really brave .I remember when I came to Germany I had someone who helped me to get to know how things work or else I couldn’t understand.I love your video’s they inspire me as small RUclipsr
Thanks dear, I would love to check you out when I have access to Wi-Fi
@@AngieOwoko thank you 😊
Hi gal,
good to see you in Germany I had not seen your videos in a long long time.
Congrats for your the good efforts.
Thanks Damaris...
You can use toilet in restaurants if you ask politely seeing you are new to germany they will let you use it,
Oh! Good to know...
Kindly guide me on the flight bookings as well
This is interesting it's good for all to learn
OK the hotel one tho, that's commom courtesy to inform front desk if you need a late check out and that's anywhere in the world... You don't just waltz down 40 min after check out.... Luckily they didn't charge you
life in Europe is about reality, you can't hide or lie in Europe, those people are smart,I was in Spain and people there don't entertain nonesense
Yap, very true...
I love your video very much but it really is a great idea
Well good for u.
20 years ago we used to use electricity in kenya for cooking free wifi is not good , the service providers are harvesting numbers for purposes of advertising and marketing
Interesting
I don't know if you've experienced being the only black person around or in a room 😂😂😂 In Spain it's so normal itabidi uzoee and very clean quiet streets.
Woi...I haven't yet 😃. In my city I see many black people everywhere every day
Hi Veronica, how is Spain na aupair program? We are actively apply to hosts in Spain.
Thanks for sharing Angie
Most welcome Glo
Hi, in the US we use both electricity and gas for cooking but gas is better. This video was interesting. Thank you!
Woow..u had 46kg baggage allowance or u paid extra
No, I had an allowance of 46Kg
Yes you need to be prepared there is absolutely no customer service in German.
Weh, let me be mentally prepared for that
I pay about 90 € for electricity thats not expensive with all the House machines!
Oh! Good to know...
@@AngieOwoko By the way just wanted to tell you to pray before you go to any church or better be led by the Holyspirit makanisa sikuizi ni mob!
U Got This Angie....It's Just A Matter Of Time....All The Very Best Angie.
Haha so sorry Angie everyday is a learning process can't wait to see the European Hotels😁😁
Hehehe...yeah, it is amazing how much you get to learn about people and things everyday
Let them keep on coming we are also leaning.
Most welcome my sister...
Have you learned deutsch before coming to Germany?
Don't Convert ....Don't Convert.....U Will Never Transact ....
Yeah they must clean for next guest people who are paid per hour...thats the reason. In Kenya they abuse workers so if guest extends there is no loss
Hey how about if you try online shopping? How is it there especially with Amazon. Me just thinking 🤔
Karibu Ujerumani dear, it's tough at first bt with time u will adjust. They are crazy with time keeping, they follow rules to the dot, and they expect u to inform yourself.
All the best Angie
Thanks a lot. I am informing myself as much as possible
Haki si you invite me
@Isabena ni ngumu sana kupewa ukiwa young, jaribu aupair, fsj or study visa
@@merjk1593 aupair is from age 18-35 and am past that
Karibu sana Ujetemani our sister. You have recorded maybe 10 but after some months they will increase. Some of us have lived here for many years and still get culture shocks. Someone mentioned but the garbage separation and time keeping was the one that almost blew my mind. Then came the colours. Mimi na rangi zangu from Kenya looked like a peacock as modt love mostly grey and black especially after October. They dress in colour seasons. Then everything is planned to the dot if it is church, Funerals, weddings. I/we could write a book about food and time change, just name it. I personally believe there are good people and bad people everywhere iwe home ama outside. I have seen the best part of Germans , and if there are Negative people I decided to block them. But every experience is different
Please can I study masters in English language in Germany.thanks
I have been offered a job an administrative assistant job and would need some tips from
I am so mesmerised how smart and in sighted you are regarding things one never really think about when in a new country. Thanks for educating so many of us. I can only see a wonderful future for you wherever you move to in the world. Keep it up beautiful!
Hugs from another super cold country. Sweden.
Yes cultural shocks are a must but utalearn fasta. Especially me when I came here I was shocked by how people pack there on shopping in supa, young people sitting in bus or train while older person is standing, na you can live somewhere and no body talks to each other- neighbours wajuani but sahii nimezoea it's their lives.. but we move. Am sure they feel the same when they visit other countries
In Netherlands as well you have to pay to use the toilets but it was cheaper like 50 cents of a euro
Jeder anfang ist schwer, all will be well Angie.
Das ist ganz richtig. All will be well
Anyone ever tried to use electricity slow cooker method? If your electric cooker has setting 0.5 to 4(4 been the highest),bring the food to a boil, ensure the lid has a good seal and then reduce heat to 0.5;leave for about 4 hours The food will not appear to boil but the pot will feel very hot;low power consumption and allows you to do other chores without worry of water drying up.
Wow! Amazing....
Hello please Is the environment in Qatar safe
Thanks!Have a lovely day!
You too...
Hi Angie
Hi Liz....

Absolutely...we find more everyday
Nice ,thanks for sharing
Oh dear...i know...this is Germany! I experienced the same shock...especially the fact that they want to pay everywhere and for everything...
Absolutely...shocking!

😃
The cubed sugar is usually only bought to sweeten tea or coffee. But usually people buy it in paperbags like flour
Good to know! I haven’t seen the one in a bag yet
HEY #Angie ❤️
I'm Taking Notes ✍️
😃😃😃
Angie dear are you sure it was rule and policies or was it because you are a foreigner with an accent after all you were only late living the hotel a few minutes.? By any chance in the airport did you notice if anyone else that was non black paying for the cart? As for not picking up the luggage you didn't need to ask it was his job to do so the fact that he didn't is suspect. I look forward to your journey in Germany. You mentioned school what are you going to school for? How were you able to apply and get admitted so quickly given how you got to germany?
Hi dear, I am studying German and it wasn't hard to get an admission. Yes, at the airport everyone had to pay for the cart
Might be it’s something new in the hotel industry. Same thing happened to me in Nairobi in November last year. The card had to be reactivated.
@@bellaj6088 might be that these people don’t want to lift heavy bags. Think he could have offered to help, but honestly If the receptionist has to help all the people coming with heavy bags he would need more pay😊. But am shocked about paying for the cart as I have never paid for one in all the airports I have gone through. But countries are different and maybe Germany is different on that issue.
And regarding the hotel situation, I always make sure I know what the check out time . I sometimes ask my spouse to be sure so we don’t pay and we always get out of the hotel at least 15 minutes before checkout.
I honestly don’t thinks it’s the receptionist job to pick up the luggage. Some hotels have some people hired to do these, but I have only seen this in tourist places like Spain Italy and you have to tip them. And it couldn’t have been because she is black, because you are picking up the cart from a line by yourself
@@Milly_in_denmark was the guy also a receptionist or a bellboy whose very job description is picking up luggages. As for the cart in the airport I've travelled abroad and not experience having to pay for a luggage cart.
Hie Angie, you are so brave. Am inspired
Thanks girl 😁
Yes, welcome to more shockings
Hahaha...I tell you
All the airports have been the trolley is alwz free
Right? It was a little strange
Hahahahaha! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm a social person.. imagine the shock I had when I discovered that Germans don't do small talk. I was shocked by the Waste/Trash separation. The yellow bin is for plastic, green/Blue is for Paper, black is for residual or household waste and the brown/Bio is for compostable eg. food. By the way, some students in the University used to collect those plastic bottles and earned some cash. Anyway, Germany has a lot of rules but if you follow them, you'll never get into trouble. Please don't sign any contracts without asking someone to translate and always remember to terminate any contract you've signed especially rent, cell phone usually 3 months before, or you'll have problems. Always inform yourself, always ask and life will be easy. Otherwise, keep the videos coming, I'm loving them. Happy Sunday!
Sasa Angie...you motivate me sana 😊
Poa Sana Liz, I am glad
Greetings from Kuwait
Greetings from Deutschland...
Sugar cubes - I am surprised you only knew of them in Germany and not in Kenya or Qatar where they are are abundantly available more so in hospitality industry but I guess there is a first time for everything.
Window grills and high fences are am eyesore and mainly seem in countries with thieves and poverty.
I think Americans, Canadians are friendlier, Germans are known to be stoic. Hope it gets better
Thanks Lydia, hope it gets better too
I'm pretty sure you can find a adapter in Saturn which is located in Forum in the city
Oh! Thanks... so will check there
I must say you have learnt a lot in such a short time. Of course, the longer you are in Germany - and depending on whether you are _staying_ here or _living_ here - the more culture shocks you will experience.
I’ll give you an example: if you’re renting a flat from a landlord, all you get are completely empty rooms for a kitchen and bedrooms. That means no kitchen sink, no tap, no working surface, no kitchen cupboard and no wardrobe in the bedroom.
You must buy and install those things for yourself every time you move into a new flat and restore the rooms to their original state when you move out. In Kenya landlords are responsible for providing tenants with a fully-functioning kitchen and a bedroom with wardrobes.
By the way, I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything in supermarkets because you must’ve done some shopping there. As you pay for your shopping with the cashier, there’s no one to pack your shopping for you like in Kenyan supermarkets.
As soon as the cashier hands you your change and the receipt, you’re expected to leave the area (so the next person can be served). If you still have to pack your shopping because you weren’t fast enough, you get a very unfriendly stare from the cashier!
What do you mean no kitchen sink and tap 😳Which country?
Hahaha...so true about shopping. I have experienced that and I had to learn fast 😅😅😅
@@AngieOwoko Angie nipigie simu we meet up - I wrote you an email yesterday
