Jussi as Romeo at The Met 1947, for me - the most outstanding tenor performance ever recorded. Jussi per sempre!!

This recording captures the ultimate tenor at his peak. It will never be equalled. Bjorling's roles are always the benchmark to go to. In this case Sayo is his perfect partner. Thank goodness this performance was recorded and preserved for future generations. Sheer perfection and professionalism .

Among the truly all great tenors Jussi always stood in a class by himself. De Los Angeles said Bjorling's voice live was far more beautiful than recorded. Some like Schicoff1 who heard Bjorling live too considers him the most perfect tenor on record. I have a long list of great tenors I have admired and followed closely for over 50 years, but I always return to Bjorling every time as the most amazing tenor voice of all time. From 1929 until 1949 the sweetness and smoothness of Jussi's voice knows no equal, possessing a fluency and beauty of tone I have never heard again since. In the fifties especially after1957 the voice grew more robust and dramatic with a fuller tone and more power, yet he retained most of the suppleness of the earlier voice. As Romeo especially in this 1947 Met version his voice is like an gymnast, especially in the final act, Bjorling delivers some of the most perfect singing I have ever heard. After half a century I still marvel and fight back the tears here. The voice is just unbelievably beautiful. A remastered version of this recording is available; it is the stuff of legends. R.I.P. Jussi!

Oh my word! What absolute perfection! I have loved Jussi's voice for quite a while, but here he outdid himself!

Listen to the last four notes. That shift can take months or even years to learn. But many singers never get it. That is why Distefanos' voice did not last.

You rarely hear two singers blend this well ... because few singers today have a good enough technique. One instance: 5:50 to 6:00. Wow. Must have really vibrated in the live hall.

THERE IS NO ONE ON THE OPERATIC STAGE TODAY, INDEED NOT FOR A LONG WHILE, WHO CAN SING AS BJORLING AND SAYAO DID.

Yes they were wonderful. I heard Rolando Villazon and Anna Netrebko do Romeo et Juliette at the LA Opera and felt it might have been like Jussi Bjoerling and Bidu Sayao years before at the Metropolitan.
