Does the type of ethernet cable limit the speeds I get? I am supposed to get 5ghz from Ezee fiber, if I connect through ethernet. I'm showing that I'm getting 1000/1000 speeds on ethernet using the method you described in your video. I suspect I need to replace the Cat6 portion of the link with Cat8. For example, I have: Cat8 between my computer and my switch Cat8 from my switch to my wall But Cat6 from my wall to the wall where my router is located Cat8 to from the wall to my router
This is the negotiated or auto negotiation between the computer and the first device it is connected to. It is not a way to check the actual network speed. A good place to start.
If I see '1gbps' in my settings menu, does that mean that the cables also support that connection or does it just state the connection type both in my PC and router?
Nope, it is the maximum theoric internet speed by your computer. You have to check your cable speed separately. The speed you'll obtain is the slowest speed of your pc and cables and internet provider combined.
@@avis6174 Exactly, its just the negotioated speed. Avi S, any tips on checking the actual speed a kin to a 'Internet Speed Test'? Noob question i know.
@@geoffcrabtree657 yes it's the negocated speed if it's the lowest speed of all of your equipment combined. Be careful, for example I have 1Gbps internet by my provider but in a laptop I have only 100mbps because of the laptop hardware limitations... you can try two or three internet speed test sites so that you get a tendency of your internet speed. you can check your actual speed then on the task manager/performance/ethernet(or wifi)
Depends on your budgets and needs. In terms of a quality setup, the best option is a Ubiquiti Edgerouter and Ubiquiti Unifi access point. Around $150 together and a rock solid setup for a home. You can also add more access points for more coverage. In terms of a consumer wireless router, I honestly can't recommend any of them. My roommate recently went through 3 $400 Linksys Routers (Nighthawk style) in 6 months, with each being incredibly unreliable. If you need to go that direction, I would just get a low price one that meets your needs, such as a $40-$60 Wireless AC router, of any of the well known brands (Netgear, Linksys, etc), rather than buying the more expensive ones because they don't seem to bring increased reliability.
my wi-fi is currently better than my ethernet because my router is rather old ( 2011 or 2014 old ) so the lan-ports are 100Mbits, while my Wi-fi connection is around 866Mbits ( idk if it's directly to the router or the Powerline Access Point which is Newer from 2017 )
Thanks for the great solution. But i've one problem if anyone can solve. My software system is being install in the admin server. I want to connect my lan network system to 3 client pc. But only one pc can read my data system stabily mean while the other two pcs running very slow to access my data. Should i upgrade my router from the pc server or any other solution?
What I'm interested in finding out is my Ethernet speed from both strait out of the NIC as well a to the gateway. 1G that's 'theoretical', right? Or, is it an actual real-time speed value that's being provided from the NIC. If that the case, all's well, at least on my end of things.
You can use iperf to check the speed between different devices on your network. Many routers support iperf so that you can check from a computer to the router. I have a video on using iperf between two computers here: ruclips.net/video/Hx2cJAh28oY/видео.html
not so simple wat on my laptop there is no option itsays open network and sharing settings and comes up with lots of options dont have a clue what is means
Lol my laptop doesnt show it has 1gb on properties at best 100 mb duplex... But when i put gygabit ethernet cable with auto negotiate, than it shows on status that it has 1gb.
Great. Thank you. very clear. I'm getting 1000/1000 on ethernet and 780/780 on wifi - great. When i check a broadband speeds checker on the same fiber modem the Wifi is a 10th of the speed of the Ethernet. Even when I place the laptop right next to the modem. Any ideas how I can get faster Wi-Fi? (Im getting downloads of 110mbs Ethernet and 10mbs Wifi). I know its a slightly different topic, but everyone prefers to use wifi these days.)

The ~900 Mbps is the max. Speed in your local Network (to your router, other PCs, local Servers) and the 75Mbs is the internet speed to most parts in the world
Im assuming yours looks like mine. After you open network and internet settings. You should see (change adapter settings) click on that and you should be in the right place
@@TheRicco1021 I actually don't have that either. After opening network and internet settings. There is a link below that says Network and Sharing Center. Honestly I really wish they would quit moving stuff around Jesus!
- Your Computer needs a 1GBit Network Port on it's Motherboard (shoud every PC build in the last 5 years have) - All of your switches and your router must be able to transfer 1 GBit - You shoud have at least Cat-5e LAN cables (all cables used in the last 5 years shoud be 5E) If all that is set, 1 GBit is automaticaly used. You can't switch it on or off, as far as I know. If you still only got 100 MBit, your cable may be damaged. If one of the copper strings is damaged, it automaticly falls back to 100 MBit. You can also see if 1 GBit works, if the green LED is flickering. If only the orange one is on, it's 100 MBit.
I didn't vote but if I had to guess, the title says it will show you your LAN speed but really it just shows negotiated speeds. I came here from a search to see how to test actual realtime link speeds and this video doesn't help with that.

When you say getting 10Mbps Down/6Mbps up, is that tested using fast.com/speedtest.net? That would be your internet speed rather than your local network speed. If you think about it in terms of water at your house, if your pipes can supply 100 gallons per minute to any of your faucets (your local speed), and your town water supply can give you 50 gallons per minute (your internet that you purchase) then you could only get 50 gallons per minute out of a faucet even though your house pipes could handle 100. This is the same with your home network, it doesn't matte how fast it is, if it is faster than what your internet service provider gives you. There are benefits to having a fast local network, even if you don't have fast internet. If you are sharing files over your network, then the limit will be your equipment rather than your internet, because all of the traffic is staying local. You would only hit a bottleneck for internet if you were sharing those files to the cloud, like with Google Drive.
Based this is NOT Checking the Network Speed, it is just Checking the NIC Settings in general. You can have 1 or 10 GBit but your cable or your switch isn't able to cover it.
