  • Satsuki bonsai exhibition has been held with the cooperation of Isobe Midorien since 10 years ago. Last year and the year before were canceled due to epidemic disease, so this is the first time in three years.
Although the number of satsuki bonsai is limited to 9 seats, you can appreciate satsuki bonsai slowly and carefully.
Mr. Isobe is popular not only in Japan but also abroad. We hope he will make an appearance at some point in the future.
◆About the three alcoves at the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, Saitama
    The Shin Style room
The Shin style room is the most prestigious style of the zashiki or Japanese style room. The alcove pillar, or toko-bashira, is made of a straight-grained Japanese cedar, while the bottom rail, or shimo-gamachi, is coated with black Japanese lacquer. Suited to seat a person of high social standing, there are formalities in the arrangements of these rooms, such as having tatami mats in the an alcove, or tokonoma, which have decorative binding on the edge in a regular, consecutive pattern, or korai-beri. Various items are also displayed, such as suiseki-stones and incense burning sets on decorative shelves, or tokowaki-dana, in the alcove.
Bonsai of high elegance are most appropriate for display in this style of room.
    Toko-bashira=alcove pillar, Shimo-gamachi = bottomrail,
    Tokonoma=alcove,
Korai-beri = a decorated binding on the edge in a regular consecutive pattern,
    Tokowaki-dana = decorative shelves
    The Gyo Style Room
Shin, Gyo, and So are the three traditional styles originating in Chinese calligraphy. Compared with the strict Shin, So style is free and portrays movement, while Gyo style falls between these two.
Most modern Japanese rooms are made in Gyo style. Displaying bonsai with curved trunks, or moyogi, or flowering bonsai is suited to this style of room.
    The So Style Room
The So style room was designed mostly for use as a tearoom. Using different woods for pillars and frames, the room is filled with variety to reduce feelings of confinement despite limited space. The smaller tatami mat, called daime-datami, on the left side of the alcove, is a place to prepare tea. Bonsai with a sense of movement such as those in the bunjingi bonsai are well suited to display in this room.
Daime-datami = a tatami mat with a narrower width than a regular mat,
Bunjingi Bonsai = Bonsai which has a slim trunk with meaningful curves, bunjingi literally means literati tree
