Would def be good to see a comparison between these two 80mm scopes. I would think the skywatcher should be better color corrected, but regarding the rest of the hardware (focuser, dew shield, rings), svbony has put out a very appealing offer. Looking forward to your review. Interesting what you say about achromats, maybe their time is counted! Eventually maybe even cheap scopes might have ed glass in them? Cheers.

I did a similar review maybe about a year and a half ago or had 102 mm ED versus the Celestron 102F 11
In my test at low power, I could not tell a difference, but I was able to tell a small difference in the medium and then at the high power you could tell
That’s ED refractor I believe was an older design and I believe a new mating system that SV Bony uses controls the chromatic aberration
I’ll try my best to show it’s full potential. Thanks for watching.

Joe: Nice review and congratulations on passing 7000 subscribers. It sounds like this SVBony is a sound 80mm refractor mechanically but the jury is still out on how it performs in the field. You compared the price to an Evostarn80mm that is about $1400, but if this SVBony has false colors then that would explain the huge difference in price. Personally false colors drive me crazy and I cannot tolerate and am willing to pay more for a good apo but for someone on a tight budget and just getting into the hobby maybe getting the achromat makes more sense and is certainly cheaper. For example, the Orion 80mm short tube is only $99 USD.
I agree with you that it is annoying that some companies try to hide what type of glass they use. I own a Skywatcher 150ED, doublet and have never been able to find out what kind of glass is on that telescope. On the other hand, I have never detected false colors using that telescope and that would explain the higher price. Can't wait to see your next video with the results of the field test. Cheers.

So first, thank you for watching the video and thanks for congratulating me
To tell you the truth, I’m only getting traction now to me 4 1/2 years of doing RUclips. I found it very slow so it’s only now that I finally got some traction which is finally great after 4 1/2 years.
I technically have used this telescope before two years ago, but me and SV Boney couldn’t come to a conclusion as I wanted to purchase the 102 and it didn’t work out at that time so that review or videos never got released
This is the second attempt so between me and you colour correction is actually very good and I think it’s because of the new mating system that they have
I don’t think it’s gonna be quite as good as let’s say, the evostar but I think it’s close
At that time I looked at Venus and it looked very sharp to me with very very little false color, if any at all
And as you know, Venus is very bright. I think you would see a little bit of colour fringing when you do imaging but visually I don’t think I really saw much at all.
But of course, I need to test it now to see with next week
I did not know you had a sky watcher 150 evostar. Did you do any videos on it?
I also have owned Scope for was about 3 1/2 years. I just sold it last year and when I first got it in 2019 that was one of my first videos that I did and even then on that review I kind of said that I didn’t like how sky watcher Used to always tell what the lens was until that particular scope the 150 ED came out then it was hush-hush. They couldn’t tell anybody what the lens was made out of.
It did perform fairly good we believe it’s a PL 55, which is still kind of decent
To tell you the truth, the 55 is fairly good and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. I think that’s what they used should’ve publicly announced it. I don’t think that’s a bad lens design at all.
It’s not as good as the 53, but the 55 is pretty decent as well. In fact, I used to own the meade 6000 30 mm triplets and I thought that was a fantastic triplet refractor and that used a 51 lens, so does the Orion and other brands
Thanks for watching. Let me know if you’ve done a video on the 6 inch ED I’d like to see it.
Mine goes back to 2019 I probably did at least 6 to 7 videos on it from 2019 to 2022 of course my videos from 2019 are very not great as far as the image quality the voice quality and overall showmanship of the video but maybe one day I’ll remaster some of my older less good videos. Cheers.

@@JoeJaguar OK. I see you found that old video I made about the Evostar 150ED. I'm kind of embarrassed at how bad that video was and I feel like you do, that I should really remaster some of my older videos too. I never could find out what glass Skywatcher used on that telescope. You're probably right that it's 55 but still it's a good telescope and I like it. I'll see you in the next video.

I purchased the SvBony 102/714 mm ED a few months ago and I was curious what your opinion on it would be. Previously I owned a Bresser 102/1000 F10 achromat, I didn’t expected a big difference but I really was pleasantly surprised with the SvBony 102mm having a significantly better image quality. The Svbony 102 mm is most probably identical to the 80 mm version, except for the aperture. I wonder if for visual observations (not astrophotography) you could see a difference between the Svbony 80 mm FPL51 and a 80 mm FPL53 made by other companies. I hope you will test it against other refractors / reflectors, I’m really curious what your opinion will be about it’s optical performance.

OK I’m glad you liked the video and I’m glad that you also like your telescope. It may not be as near perfection as the top end brands but I think for the entry to the middle class it’s probably gonna be good.
Just between you and me, I did look through it about two years ago and wanted to do a review, but I couldn’t work out any thing with SV Bonny at that time
So it’s not the first time I’ve looked at it
I expect the 102 just to be a little bit longer and heavier, of course, but can punch a little bit further, since it’s a little bigger
Next Thursday, I should have by then I’m gonna be doing videos and images through the daytime like the sun and daytime viewing. Then I’m going to have a quick view of the moon and Jupiter
The following week I might release the video which I luckily have a sky watcher, 80 mil equinox, which was there more high-end model to the evostar line
So before I return it, I will actually compare the sky watcher equinox to this one since they’re both 80 mm once I return it I will ask them if I can borrow the 102 and test that
Finally, after that, I want to ask them to lend me the 122 new triplets that they have and I want to test that one then so stay tuned
And thanks for your compliment on me reaching my goal

@@JoeJaguar Thank you for your answer, can't wait to see the Svbony 80 mm ED against the Skywatcher Equinox :). 4 months ago the 122 mm Svbony triplet was 1599 $ so I purchased the cheaper 102 mm ED doublet. If Svbony would have sold the 122 mm triplet like they do today with just 1399 $ I would have purchased that but at that time I couldn't know that they will drop the price by 200 $. Who knows, maybe I will buy the 122 mm triplet next year, 1399 $ is an excellent price, other companies sell smaller 115 mm FPL51 triplets with a little over 1500 $.

@@3dfxvoodoocards6 yeah sometimes it’s hard to know when these things are gonna go on sale hindsight is easy
You could I don’t know if you have enough funds purchase it at the sale price and then try to let your 102 go and maybe it might compensate. Of course they’re still gonna be some difference from 102 to 122 and then the first ones that double it and now to a triplets so there will be some difference in price , but the 200 bucks helps
I guess you could answer that question

@@janomacko5764 you’re correct the beehive cluster would be nice as well as M4 one the only problem is with my home location is that I’m in a white zone also known as a portal zone eight
This location with the 849 street lights that are shining on me. There’s no way I can see the constellations to star hop to the beehive or any deep object that’s not a bright constellation or star.
That’s why I really like even for experience people like me the Astro hopper or the StarSense because in situations like this where it’s so bright and I don’t see any stars, I can still find the objects if I’m at a dark site then I don’t need these apps and can find it myself, but the beehive will be hard to find my location

@@JoeJaguar I have 851 street lights shining on me. So, I bought a couple Sky Watcher go to mounts and some light pollution filters. Things that I cannot see with my eyes appear in my camera with a 1 to 15 second exposure.
Sky Watcher uses SynScan application. So, to align the scope, I can sit in my house and choose 1 to 3 stars from a list which shows the alt/az of the stars (so I know what stars are blocked by trees or fences). The mount moves to the approximate location. I then use SharpCap the plate solving move to feature to center the star. I usually do a one star alignment and after that objects I what to see are close to being centered.
This allows me photograph tiny, faint things I cannot see in the finder scope or the optical tube. Works great, if you don't mind looking at things on a computer screen instead of through an eyepiece.

Looks very solid mechanically. I wonder what the total weight with mount, diagonal and eyepiece will be. I was considering buying one of those to replace my grab-and-go visual setup with 80/400 short achromat together with APM 24mm flat field eyepiece (poor man’s televue panoptic), but I decided to stay with such setup. The main reason is more weight not only to the telescope itself, but also to 2-inch diagonal and 2-inch eyepiece, which are needed to maximize the FOV at F7 (plus of course the extra price for all of that). With F5 achromat the 1.25-inch 24mm eyepiece is good enough, and I stick at that low magnification most of the time anyway, to just feast my eyes on the most prominent large open clusters when I am lazy to carry out a bigger scope.

    • @JoeJaguar
      @JoeJaguar  6 месяцев назад +2

I believe in the video I said it was 6 pounds probably if you put it 2 inch diagonal and depending which 2 inch piece you’re probably looking at at least 7 to 7 1/2 pounds, which is still reasonable
I do have 102 mm F5 for those really wide objects
If you go for this telescope, what you could do is maybe buy those 2 inch reducers
That way you can use the telescope at seven when you need the power use the 2 inch reducer when you want wide
I’m gonna be testing later on and if these 2 inch focal reducers work, I might have no need for my 102 mm at five if it works
Maybe I could just use my Takahashi 102f8 with the reducer and it might get me almost the same thing as the 102 f5

Interesting refractor. Joe I have another question for you, if I have two 32 mm eyepieces, one with 1.25 inch 52 deegree and the other with 2 inch 70 degree, will the galaxies by brighter and more easely visible with the 2 inch 70 degree one or will it be the same in both eyepieces because the magnification is the same ? What eyepieces do I need to maximize the chances of seeing galaxies, should I just lower the magnification as much as possible ? Thank you!

    • @JoeJaguar
      @JoeJaguar  6 месяцев назад +3

Well, the only other thing that can lower or raise brightness is your exit pupil. I am not entirely convinced, but alot people.say so
If your ex pupil is much larger than your eyes can handle, then you’re losing aperture or light
To calculate, exit people divide your telescope in millimetres by the power
But in general, yes both high pieces would be the same power just the 2 inches would give you a wider field of view
Sometimes to see galaxies better, you need a wide field because if you can’t see any background sky, and sometimes you cannot tell the difference, let’s say the galaxy or nebula takes up the whole field of you there’s nothing to compare it to
So, by having a larger field of view with more sky background, then might be able to distinguish it from the background sky
Also, by having a lower power, the object is tighter, and sometimes a bit brighter, too hopefully that helps

But they seem to be very good quality for the money, of course not as high-quality as other brands, but maybe for the general population
