Attempting to Fix Timing Issue | Bmw N54 335i Vanos Sprockets and Timing N54 Engine

- Hello everyone, in today's video I'm attempting to fix my n54 engine by swapping the two Vanos sprockets that I believe are the issue for my bmw stalling out and running with a rough idle! This video should help you put your 335i back in correct time if it isn't running correctly!
If you need the timing kit you can pick it up here:
www.amazon.com...
You first want to start by putting the engine at top dead center by rotating the engine by the crank with a 22 mm to get piston 1 to the highest point with the QR codes facing up, once you get that roughed in you will put the locking pin in the transmission hole and that point will be at absolute top dead center!
After that you will want to release the timing chain tensioner once all of the timing tools are on the engine, this will losen the chain and you will be able to remove the two 16 mm bolts that hold the timing sprockets on the front of the motor!
I then swapped the two sprockets to the correct camshaft, and tried to keep the timing chain in the same spot, you will want to put the sprocket wheels back on and hook them up to the timing tool.
After everything looks good you will put in the black timing tensioner from the kit in the chain tension hole and hand tighten then put the new bolts into the camshaft holes and tighten to 20 nm then 180° for the correct torque!
Then pull all of the timing tools off of the motor and the locking pin out of the transmission then rotate the motor around 2 times and put the timing tools back on to check timing!
I am really hoping this is the solution to my timing issue on my bmw 335i which I will be releasing a video of it starting up after I put everything back together!
Thank you so much for watching I hope this helped you in some way or another! Subscribe to see if my car ever runs again!!😂
I really want to see this car running so i hope this works!!
I rebuilt my cam ledges and set the timing and have had to take it apart a few times to verify that it all aligns but my car still won't start! I have noticed it doesn't seem like there's oil getting thrown up onto the top end when I take everything off and check. I just keep getting codes that my intake cam can't be found and I have checked the wiring, replaced the sensors and still have no luck. But the funny thing is when I first disassembled the top end after inserting the crank pin both cams were at the 11:50 position and I had to turn the crank every so slightly to instally cam lock tool to proceed with the teardown. Should I set the timing ever so slightly to just before TDC like how it was before?
Timing can always look a bit off, but you should verify all the timing marks with the cam locks and the crank locks, if those are all in the car should be at the correct tdc to run and you might have a different issue
@@ProjectRacecar2 yeah I mean I checked everything. Funny thing is it's been sitting for a few months and I tried to randomly start it and it wanted to turn over for once, even sputtered a bit but the battery needs to be charged
@@erikalvarez4516 I would charge the battery fully and give it a shot in the morning! I would make sure the cam sensors are seated correctly they are really easy to not have them seating right which won't cause it to read! It happened to me during the install
"hopefully I don't implode my engine"😂😂
Lol I'm really hoping I don't!
I really hope this works for you!!
I hope so too! We will see how it goes!
Do you take off the serpentine belt to move the crankshaft?
Ummm you know I don't think I had mine off, you should be able to do it with the belt on!🙂
@@ProjectRacecar2 did it take a lot of pulling force to move the crank? I put the car in neutral and tried to move it but it didn’t budge. I took the sparks out to release the pressure.
@@ButteredPeanuts no it should be pretty easy, your wheels might be fighting it, turning the crank might be fighting the wheels on the ground I can't remember if I had the wheels up, but it should be a firm turn but maybe on 20ft pounds of turning
@@ButteredPeanuts if the serpentine belt is on, maybe try taking it off since that is an easy job, make sure you write down the diagram of it!
@@ProjectRacecar2 yeah. I’m trying to take turn the crank bolt but it’s not budging. The car is in neutral and the e brake is off
Did you fix it?
I've had some issues with the car that came into play, I haven't started the car yet to see if it's fixed! I am in the process of pulling the motor, but I'll post an update as soon as i try to start it!
@@ProjectRacecar2 wow! OK! Hope after all this runs fine!
@@JonathanRomeroMusic I'm hoping so too! We will see! It's been down for too long! I might be picking up an e30 this week so I might have content on that soon too
@@JonathanRomeroMusic hey I just wanted to update you I got the car running today! The swapped sprockets were the issue!! It ran and drove for the first time in a year and a half!!
@@ProjectRacecar2 wow glad to hear that, awesome
Subframe is easier
You think? Im just not a fan of working under the car
@@ProjectRacecar2 yeah under the car sucks but for just an oil pan it's the way to go in my opinion. Also it's not ideal on jack stands
@@Beemerboii yeah I was on jack stands I don't have a lift, but I ended up just pulling the motor and left the transmission in, it wasn't all that bad
@@ProjectRacecar2 that's awesome man I'm glad it wasnt too bad I have yet to pull mine cause I always figured it wasn't worth it.
@@Beemerboii it's really easy for the most part, I had to pull the head and easiest way is to pull the motor, I did it by myself in 2 days without ever pulling a motor! The whole front end comes off! Thanks for stopping by man!
Come on man what this vdeo ? I don't understand nothing
Im sorry you are having issues understanding, what issues are you having with your car, maybe I can help
@@ProjectRacecar2 man i have n54 engine timing chain problem but its nothing)) problem is awd not rear wheel drive , i have to take out everthink to get this lower chain out (
