Great video Jeff, you have a nice multi grafted avocado tree. Can't wait to hopefully one day try the fruit from my Mexicola. Great taste test! Thanks for sharing!
I am in the Tampa Florida area. We have been eating fruit through July off our Mexicola tree. I have 5 left for August. We have been hot all summer- upper 90s.
Excellent… Your weather is crazy compared to California. I say that because when temps reach 90f here, it’s quite comfortable as our humidity is low. In Florida we run for the AC if temps are in upper 70’s with high dewpoint.
Excellent video. It reminded me of a visit to Cuenca Ecuador when I got my first taste of Mexicola avocado (they called them Guatemala avocado). I was at a relative's party when a neighbor came over with what looked like two metal trash can lids stacked high with these tiny avocadoes. I wasn't sure what to make of them when the neighbor said just eat them skin and all. I was so surprised by the shiny thin skin that tasted like anise, buttery insides with quite a large seed. Each was just a couple bites and done. I ate about a dozen of them that day, which would probably equal one good sized Grande. Can't wait to have them again some day.
Hi Jeff Thanks for sharing your work I am in the north of Spain and here I investigate new varieties of avocado with interesting genetics and recently I discovered a very interesting hybrid avocado, on the outside it was similar to Bacon or the strong one, but inside it had a very yellow flesh, and I was surprised by the Magnificent flavor of this meat, it tasted much better than a Hass, and I related that flavor so good and of background nuances, to that yellow color of its meat, in Europe I have never seen an avocado with this color of meat, it is also quite resistant to cold, I am very excited about it, I will try to clone it a greeting from Spain
I managed to bring back a seed from my trip to Portugal last week that I intend to germinate. It had similar characteristics - large, smooth skin, and green when ripe. I hope it provides a sturdy rootstock that I can graft mexicola or GEM variety in the new year.
Thank you for the video! Do you have a type B avocado tree as well? I just bought a Mexicola Grande (A), and a Jim Bacon (B). Wonder your recommendation on how far apart I should plant them. Thank you!
I'm surprised at the size of the seed of the mexicola. I really think the mexicola grande is beautiful. Are they dense creamy fruited? I prefer the dense creamy avocados over the "wet" large Florida avocados.
Another great and inspiring video. It’s tempting to plant everything you show it’s possible in 9B. I have a question for you: what type of small avocado tree would you recommend for a small yard? Please advise. Many thanks!
Get the GEM, Reed, Lamb or Gwen. All these are smaller trees that produce great tasting avocados. You can also control the size of a tree by pruning it.
@@TropicalGardenGuy woohoo I finally found a place that sells them in Australia. They don’t have any in stock atm until spring time so I have preordered mine 😀👍 can’t wait to get them.
Is there anyway I can buy some of those small mexicola seeds. I have a mexicola grande. But I’ve never seen avocados that small, plus they ripen a bit earlier. I’m located in zone 8-9, the coastal area is 9 and a bit inland is 8b- 8a. The most popular avocado I’ve seen growing in the area is Lila. But I’ve been trying to get my hands on a fantastic avocado. And I just ran into this video and that small mexicola looks great! I like snack sized fruits like the oak leaf papaya
Coffee & pineapple? WOW. What about cacao? I eat raw, organic cacao powder daily with cold brew coffee & milk. I can't buy decent papaya anymore at Sprouts or TJ''s. Watermelon is tasteless half the time.
What do you do with all your fruit? There's probably too much for you and your wife, no? Perhaps, you "can" the extras? Maybe canning avocados do not make sense but what about the other fruits?
The smaller the fruits are the stronger flavor and the larger the fruits are the lesser flavor. In nature usually organic and none GMO fruits/veggies are packaged with flavors because they are smaller and flavor is concentrated in that smaller side vs GMO makes larger crops but have very little taste because the flavor has to distribute to the larger much bigger volume rather than focus on small volumes. Just like a migit tends to have hotter temper than a large size person. Dynamite comes in small package, now you get my point 😂😂😂

I tried my mexicola Grande today and it was so good much nuttier and oily, richer tasting than a store bought hass, dense and creamIer than a hass.
So good!

Wow! I love avocados. I envy the varieties you can get hold of.
Thanks for watching!
@@TropicalGardenGuy it’s a pleasure I love the channel, I take a lot away.

Good video ive wanted this video for a while now
Welcome
Do you ever see Stewart do well around here?
The ones I’ve seen growing are hit and miss.
I know of at least one that grows a lot of fruit.
Very interesting!
Very helpful. I have the Grande that has fruit after nothing last year. I am curious about how much pruning you do and when . Thanks, Joe in Fresno
So far I only prune if I’m gonna add a graft

@@budstikwhy does mexicola need rootstock? is it inferior to have non grafted mexicola?

I graft a and b on my trees, but it’s not necessary as an a or b tree will still fruit without the other

I only hope I get to try a Mexicola of either type one day Jeff 🤞
I’m surprised that they don’t grow them in Spain?
@@TropicalGardenGuy I think they do in some areas Jeff but they don't ship them overseas as the skins are too thin I guess
Can’t wait to be able to buy these trees. They are so hard to get in Australia though which is ridiculous.
Yea, Ive heard that,
@@TropicalGardenGuy woohoo I finally found a place that sells them in Australia. They don’t have any in stock atm until spring time so I have preordered mine 😀👍 can’t wait to get them.
Just liked the video because of that straight bite into the cola
Do you grow Reed? How does mexicola compare to Reed?
No reed yet
@@TropicalGardenGuy Thx for the reply!
I heard reed was one of the tastiest varieties out there.
Ive heard that to!
Hi Jeff. I wanted to ask, are these pure breed grown from pure/original seeds or are they grafted?
Grafted

Better to grow grafted trees.
You can find mex grande online
I live in Zone 7. What do you recommend that I grow?
Probably need a greenhouse
@@TropicalGardenGuy So with a greenhouse, should I grow a Jim Bacon Avacado, Mexicola, or Mexicola Grande?
All are about similar hardiness,
@@TropicalGardenGuy Thank you for your time.
Can you please make a video about big black avocado.
I have done a couple vids last year .
There will be an update soon
Hi Jeff how do i feed my very old mexicola tree
A large tree, a lil nitrogen each year should be good
Does your Carmen reach maturity on the tree? How do they taste? I’m have a Carmen and Sharwil that I want to put in the ground in March of next year.
My Carmen is still young
I have this tree and it’s about 60-70ft tall!
👍
Which is the coldest variety and how cold can it get
My coldest is mexicola grande, mine took 22f with minor damage
@@TropicalGardenGuy I live in Apple valley California
Usually it hovers around 30 in the winter
But I have seen as cold as 17
Didn't you say in the video that if you want a cold hardy one try Mexicola not Mexicola grande?
I have a hass seedling tree and idk how to tell when to pick off the tree
Depends on where u live, but I generally start looking for ripe fruit in May
@@TropicalGardenGuy Bay Area 9b, by may you mean the following year or the same year it set the fruit
@@emanueldelgado540 The following year!
Have u tried growing a mango tree
Yes, I’ve been quite successful.
Check this video I made in the summer.

Avocado can be take off the seed and frozen. It freezes well.

Yup that what I’ve heard
Hi know somebody were can buy in CA lucuma trees. I have lot of Eugenia tree's for exchange.
Maybe Mimosa Nursery in SoCal?
you told what the mexicola tasted like but not the grande.........usless.
Grande tastes similar, though not quite as nutty as Mex regular
