  • Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North is a new, standalone card game in the established Imperial Settlers universe, with players heading to the far north where three different factions live: Scotsmen, Inuits, and Vikings. Take on the role of leader, and make your faction into the best empire in the world!
    Develop your economy, deflect your opponent, and fight for dominance in the north. Learn new mechanisms, and experience a unique style of Imperial Settlers. Will you be able to create the most successful civilization in Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North?
    Can you own both this and Imperial Settlers? Does Empires of the North refine and improve on an already great system? Did Portal just blow 2019 out of the water? Check out my bumper sized review of Empires of the North

    Your enthusiasm shines through on this. Shame I can't just nip round to play the game right now, because that's how I feel.

    Glowing recommendation there Luke. I trust your judgement and have just ordered a copy. Now the (interminable) wait for it to arrive in my neck of the woods.

    I pre-ordered this game based on Zee''s 10 rating but this reviews raises my confidence this is the right type of game for my collection. I own 51st State Master set but do not own Imperial Settlers "the original" game. Thanks for another thorough and insightful review! Thumbs up Luke.... yet again!

      Thanks! Yeah I watched Zee's review as he was sitting with me while I was playing Ignacy at the UK Expo - I could tell this was a game he would like but wasn't expecting a full 10.

    Hi Luke thank you for the video. I have not played any of this series but will be investing in this as soon as possible. Nice one.

    Hi Luke, many thanks for the review. Your enthusiasm shines bright throughout.
    One small thing about the review: you obviously know the original game well. And so this review seemed most useful to those who do as well, whether they loved it or not. You spend quite a bit of time explaining how the rules have been tweaked and improved and what's new, but nowhere near as much telling people who haven't played the original or who came late to the hobby what the basic gameplay is like. How do we build that deck? What kind of tableau are we building? How do we build from our humble beginnings. It nearly feels like I should go watch a review of the first game to understand this one better.
    That said, great job on relating how interesting and how much fun it has been for you though. The solo mode sounds really interesting too.

      To explain the first game in that much detail would have added another ten min to an already elongated review.

      @@TheBrokenMeeple Fair point. Maybe a few more still pictures of a game in progress to add context? It's easy to offer suggestions though. I appreciate the work you put into the reviews.

    I'm skeptical of the high praise right now. Zee Garcia from The Dice Tower also gave it a seal of excellence (10's). So did you as well as some Rhado loved it. I think. At any rate I like Imperial settlers but there was something that wasn't clicking it get it on the table as often as I would like. I have all expansions aside from the Amazons and the cards related to these expansions sort of dilute the deck using all the cards. Great review.

    Now I have to find money to buy this game 😊
    Great review 👍🏻

    I love Imperial Settlers, but something seems off to me with this one. Hopefully the person in our group who has the original game will buy this too and I'll get to try it. :)

      People will have their preference, but I can't see anyone actively disliking over and liking the other.

    Ooh, that tray! Does it have a lid though or make a mess shelved vertically?

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад

      No lid so yeah vertical storage isn't recommended.

    How's the solo.im hearing the challenge is too easy,imperial settlers is one of my favorite solo games. Its so replayable and challenging.and I'm kind of nervous about this one,and will it get samey with the static decks.also nor a fan of giving some exclusive solo scenerio as preorder bonuses.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  4 года назад

      I didn't think it was too easy but I guess IS is harder. Some factions are harder to use them others though and the new Japanese ones especially.

    I wish I had played Imperial Settlers prior to this game, as I picked up both. I played Empires of the North first and enjoyed it so much that I'm not sure if I want to play its predecessor now.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад +1

      Both are good games and they do stand out enough to warrant both in my collection. I would give IS a try and have a preference.

    I don’t know anything about this series. Is this a “take that” game? I don’t like the idea of that kind of interaction in an engine builder. Thanks!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад +1

      Oh no, it's not a take-that. The only part that hurts an opponent is that if you spend a Raze token, you can exhaust ONE of their many locations. But every player can do that and also that person may want those tokens to go conquering other islands so it's really not as bad as it sounds.

      @Luke_L 5 лет назад

      @@TheBrokenMeeple Ok, thanks! I thought I heard you mention Ignacy razing your building or something, so I just wanted to make sure. I'll have to give this a try!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад +1

      @@Luke_L Yeah essentially, he would exhaust my taverns now and again because they were the basis for my victory point engine.

    • @Luke_L
      @Luke_L 5 лет назад

      @@TheBrokenMeeple Hm, that sounds like it could be annoying at a higher player count if one person is getting picked on. But it sounds like from your previous comment that you can actually make use of those tokens. I might not rush out and buy this one, but I'll keep an eye out for it at a Meetup to see how I like it. Thanks!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад +2

      The only reason you would exhaust another players location is because they're already the leader and you're trying to hold them back. There's no other gain for doing it and certainly doing it on a losing player will serve no benefit.
      And if a leading player can't deal with the expectation that other players will try to reign him in, then watch out in other games! :P

      @@TheBrokenMeeple I have a copy of Empires of the North that had been sitting on my shelf of shame for the past 9 months. Then I busted it out last night and I don’t know why it kinda fell flat.
      However, I had already completed two solo sessions of Spirit Island that same day so maybe I was just gamed-out.
      But it’s possible that the theme is too kiddie for me.

    The original Imperial Settlers was pretty bad, but I was willing to give the North version a shot anyway. Turns out it’s much much better and pretty much fixes everything that was wrong with that game 👍👍

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

      The Broken Meeple I actually feel that Empires of the North is closer in feel to Res Arcana than the original Imperial Settlers due to the less restrictive, more playful gameplay
