    Walt Disney himself stated:
" You're dead if you aim only for kids, adults are only kids grown up anyway."
So it's quite sad to see how many people only view animation as something aimed for kids, may it be regular viewers or corporate higher ups who have little to no respect for the things they create unless it provides profit to them

The perception of animation as a kid's medium is just as prevalent as the perception that comics are a kid's medium which is why in the west people tend to get up in arms when either of these artforms attempt to cater exclusively to an adult audience. Successful projects in either medium that handle their subjects maturely are looked upon as outliers, but a time when either is fully embraced as "equal" to other forms of media is still a ways off, and probably not going to happen in my lifetime.
Most people who watch superhero films, for example, will say that the Spiderman: Into the multiverse film is perhaps the best Spiderman film out there, but if all the people who claim to like superhero films actually went and saw it when it was released that film would have easily made over one billion at the box-office. The only reason it didn't was because it was animation.

    • @ProjektTaku

I'm actually so disheartened to see comics looked down upon. There are some truly great comics that aren't even in the superhero genre, like The Sandman, Sweet Tooth, IZombie and Swamp Thing.

    • @DerrickWilson-fm7vc
      @DerrickWilson-fm7vc Месяц назад +1

I would argue Spiderverse is actually an example of animation becoming more respected.
The first one didn’t do amazing, but it had a very strong streaming presence, which resulted in the (imo worse) sequel doing pretty damn well, especially at a time when many movies in general were not. I know people that normally don’t care about superheroes or animation rave about that film.
I do think the general opinion about animation is shifting to a more positive one. It’s going to take a long time, but I’ve noticed a trend where the best animated movies (Inside Out 2, Spider-Man, Puss n Boots 2, Boy and the Heron) are doing really well while many of the cash grabs (aside from minions) are faltering.
People are being more savvy about the movies they’re seeing, and well made animated films are still making big bucks. There is respect for the medium, and I think that respect is growing

This is why I get so annoyed when people constantly go on about live-action adaptations. As if somehow everything else is inferior and must strive to become live-action or have a "superior" live-action version to its name.
    It doesn't.
And I'm sick of Hollywood or whoever trying endlessly to make things like Avatar The Last Airbender, Dragon Ball, or Lion King into live-action. The latter being completely impossible - which is why it was 3D animation pretending to be live-action.

What I think would really help it is if more money went to the US Department of Arts. There's a reason why most of the cartoons are outsourced to other places (Canada, Australia, Ireland, Philippines, South Korea), and that is to get tax credits and funding. There's a really good video by Doodley on it: ruclips.net/video/1bHEV9UyMOg/видео.html
There's an upcoming animation worker strike coming in the weekend, and there's also Harris and Walz running for President and Vice-President respectively, who, in the past have allied with unions, and could have more control once they win the election. We could bring the need to fund the US Department of Arts to help with credits.

When you said “Scavengers Reign can’t be live action” I screamed “YES”. And there’s a bunch of things that can’t or shouldn’t be because they work so well in the medium, doing it any other way just won’t hit the same. Akira is a prime example of this. So grandiose and stylish, it’s made for the page, or for very rich animation. This is why I hate the idea of live action anime/video projects. Because it’s almost like Hollywood thinks those mediums need them to be cool, and they couldn’t be more wrong.
There’s no limit to what you can do in animation, and that’s part of what makes it so special.

The fundamental difference between animation & live action is that live action is grounded in reality, but struggles to express itself, while animation is innately expressive, but struggles to feel real. They are 2 sides of the same coin. Animation is vivid, wacky, zany, colorful, wild, imaginative, and stunning beyond belief. The hardest things for animators to achieve are heavily nuanced, human-like movements, and the immaculate detail & speed involved in real world actions. Such things come naturally in live action filming. Whereas live action directors struggle to build phenomenal looking sets & costumes, animation can create whatever the human mind can imagine.

I can't help but feel like people forget that a lot of there is a lot of animation in live action as well. Yes there is a lot of special effects and just static backgrounds, but some one has to animate godzilla. Some one has to animate Megatron. Sure it is vastly more costly than 2D or dedicated 3D style movies to get the detail necessary for a suspension of disbelief, but it really shows how important animation is.
How common it is also highlights how little Hollywood wants to use real life cinema to its strengths though...
Ultimately my point is that we often forget about the efforts of 3D animators in big budget movies and how impossible those movies would be without them. Unless some one wants to make rubber suits that also allow full human movement and a likely way more expensive to utilize a team of special effects artists...
edit: just to make sure if someone brings it up, mo-cap itself is an animation art form. A lot can go wrong if you don't know what you are doing.

Here’s another for the list: localization and accessibility. Yes any show can be subbed, and yes you can try to dub live action shows but it will immediately snap suspension of disbelief in half. But animated media has been dubbing successfully for years - and while some may say fight tooth and nail for sub over dub supremacy, you cannot understate the power of voice. Dubbed and properly localized shows are able to tap into multinational audiences - just look at the most successful anime of all time and how they are able to quite literally speak to peoples from all walks. And moving beyond preference, dubbing enables you to reach blind/low vision audiences, children, and busy adults who consume media while multitasking or too tired to read squinty subtitles. And while yes, more voice actors costs more money, expanding your total audience also represents the potential for more revenue aka: money. So take that to the fancy suits at the top as another check in the favor of animation

If you're an animator or have tried animation you'll notice the extensive use of animation fundamentals in scavengers reign which is basically what sets animation apart from live action

I enjoy animation, as it is what made me pursue it as a career. It feels wonderful to see others talk about how great it is, seeing how far the artists push themselves to create various animated projects for the world to see, and what audiences may get from them with the stories that’s being told. As an artist and animator myself, that is something that I continue to work towards.

Made 5 movies by hand that were suppose to be in animation but the media hates art and wants it as a tool. Don Bluth enjoyed my story VX Super Force and liked art I had. My things may be still art based but they are fun, and different works many people failed to understand.

Animation as a whole is doing much better these days, but it's still no where near where it should be. So it's good that companies like Pixar seem to be finding their groove again, and Dreamworks The wild robot looks like it'll be fantastic. More people are understanding that animation is not just for kids, but also if a animation's story IS aimed at kids that it's no excuse not to give your best effort. And people that grew up on movies and shows like that are now old enough to help make that more clear. I especially want voice actors to start getting the respect they deserve.

This is why One Piece DESERVES the Wit studio remake. I’ve always felt as a OP manga reader that the anime never did it any justice and actually ruins and cheapens it to a mediocre level. It’s a different experience for me. when I watch other series I often think to myself the unimaginable heights the story could have with an adaptation that not only stays true to the reader’s experience but also gives it life, colour, fluidity and music. I believe Oda’s story to be one the greatest pieces of fiction and so a proper adaptation is appropriate

Animation is my favorite medium. The amount of creativity that can come about from it is insane. My favorite being hand drawn animation so it's been disappointing to see so many american animated TV shows being so lackluster in animation in animation quality. Anime still does great and the occassional warner bros cartoon are still well animated with hand drawn animation
