If you look at about the 4:26 mark you'll see Ernie Ladd in his corner waiting for Dusty Rhodes to tag him in so that he can win the match when "fans" in the first row demand he get off the ring apron and on the floor and sign autographs for them much like Dusty Rhodes had done previously during the match. Ladd patiently explains to these "fans" that he has a match ongoing and cannot sign autographs at that time. While this is going on Dusty decides he doesn't want Ladd to tag in and win the match, so he refuses to tag Ladd in.
Virgil beggging for mercy! He’s a face! Ernie was right, he was “Dirty” Rhodes! Shame on him for signing autographs while he should be focused on wrestling!
As if Dirty Rhodes was not fat enough.. he was outside the ring signing autographs, eating hot dogs, and guzzling coca-cola while Ernie Ladd was inside the ring battling both Ivan Koloff and Buddy Wolfe.
The Lex Luger turn on Barry Windham a decade later is a direct ripoff of this great match. Here Dusty turns on Ernie Ladd for no good reason. Don't you believe that claptrap that Solie is peddling that Ernie Ladd refused to tag in during the match. The footage refutes that assertion. Rhodes wanted to win the match, but when Ladd gives him the opportunity to gain the victory, Rhodes pouts and takes a clean-no-controversy-middle-of-the-ring pin fall and deliberately loses the title.
Michael Connors. The king of wrestling doing all the work while 300+ lbs Dirty Rhodes signing autographs clowing for the marks in the front row then collapsing drunk outside ring while Ladd needs to tag out. A well deseved whuppin for Big Dirty.
You're absolutely correct. Rhodes is falling down drunk. He's probably in a the middle of a six month long lost weekend. Buddy Wolf tries to help Rhodes and stop him from stumbling off the ring apron but Rhodes is in such a stupor that Wolf is not able to stop him from falling.
Totally agree. Dirty Rhodes had it coming by schlepping for the fans instead of taking care of business. Ladd, being the ultimate professional he always is, couldn't take any more of his insolence and had to teach him a lesson...

This is 40-some years ago already and fans still kayfabe in the comments section. lol love it
At 2:38 you can clearly Rhodes signing autographs for the fans while Ernie Ladd is in the ring wrestling.
Classic heel move from Big Cat! He was the best at betraying a partner, and voice and speaking style was smooth as butter. RIP, Ernie.
This was in Tallahassee Fla. I remember going with my cousins.

@@erniebillings4852 Hell of a card, thanks for sharing it! Patterson vs Keirn must have been a wrestling clinic.
ever notice koloff is always around when someone is turning on rhodes?
Phil Citta
Yeah, Ivan was there when Ole turned on Dusty in Atlanta
Exactly...
It is a well known fact that Gordon Solie doctored films to tell a story. This is just another example.
John Wayne Rhodes trimmed down? How did Gordon Soile allow those words out of his mouth?

He was cool when him and ol' Dickie Murdoch were a villainous team. Once he turned on Gary Hart, he lost it all.

Ernie knew Dusty was a whiskey drinker like Wahoo! That’s why he turned heel.
