    As a European/German woman I could not find the patience within me to watch this clichéd nonsense till the end, even though I generally love Ryan's reactions. Did this American whose video Ryan reacts to grow up under a stone or what? If I leave my apartment and walk 50 meters to the next underground stop, I will see at least 50 types of totally different women and men, different generations, different ethnicity, different clothing styles, different behaviours. Once on the underground or at the central station, this guy's mind would be blown by the heterogeneity of people in a German city alone, not to speak of Germany or even Europe in its entirety!... Clearly this man needs to travel more. 😜

    • @RainbowYak
      @RainbowYak 11 месяцев назад +18

      To be fair though, he did preface his video by saying that Europe is comprised of many different cultures and ethnicities and that his characterization is merely a rough description. And to be even more fair, there are definitely places in Europe that fit into his rough description. For example here in Switzerland, women do dress quite formally and traditionally feminine most of the time. The same can be said for France and for Eastern European countries such as Poland, Ukraine, Russia etc.. I'm not sure Germany is a good example because its culture has been highly Americanized since WWII, just like that of the UK. Besides, even Germany isn't all cities and urban subcultures. There are rural regions where alternative styles of dressing are way less common than in Berlin or Hamburg.

    The thing about speaking American is that, as a simplified version of English, many people don't have a vocabulary that allows them to express themselves concisely and there are pitfalls everywhere which result in them being misunderstood in many other English-speaking countries. The main two adjectives the USA employs to describe someones intelligence are just "dumb" or "smart". All those beautiful words like "canny", "clever" "sharp" "astute" "adept" "brilliant" "knowledgable" "well-read" "well-educated" "witty" "quick-witted" "perceptive" "shrewd" "percspicacious"" "".....are just the ones that come to mind - doubtless any Thesaurus has heaps more. But these are all ways to describe a "smart" person...there are so many different kinds of intelligence and we have words that fit them all.
    As for "dumb" - a word I've never heard used to describe a person except for people from the US - but there's "thick", "slow-witted" "uneducated" "slow" "dim" "obvious" "uninformed" "dense" "inane" "foolish" "ridiculous " "mindless" "silly" "daft"....because there are also many different kinds of "dumbness" which have no correlation with a person's IQ.
    As you'll see from the comments, "smart" to most English speakers means "chic" "sophisticated" "elegant" "fashionable" "well-groomed" "trim" "neat" "spruced up" "dapper" "edgy". So, if people from the US are described as "Smart" no-one's referring to their brain-power but to their dress sense!

      I have to concur.
      The word dumb doesn't even mean stupid, it means someone who lacks the ability to talk.
      Deaf and dumb was a common phrase back in my youth because most people who are deaf can't hear their own voice and are therefore also dumb.
      It has nothing to do with being dim-witted.

In Norway you will not usually see woman wearing skirts or dresses when working in a shop or any other place that women in Germany or eastern European countries. In the summer some women will wear a summer dress on a hot day, but most women would wear a shorter pants and just a t-shirt or a tank top and crocks or sneakeers. As it's cold most of the year we usually also wear some sort of woolen sweather or jacket that we or our mother or grandmother knitted for us. We usually wear an all weather jacket, it's a regular jacket that is wind and rain proof but is not a rain jacket or a winter jacket but like a hybrid as we usually can have a lot of weather changes in a few hours from warm and sunny to snowy and cold, and it's usually a lot of wind. Sweds and Finns wear pretty much the same type of clothing, but I think danes is more like women in Italy and France, maybe because it's warmer climate there or maybe because more danes is religious than Norwegians and Sweds and Finns. I don't know how many of the Finns that is religious, but they sure swear a lot in every movie. Women in Oslo is wearing more make up than people in other parts of Norway I think.

      Same here in Finland, if people (either men or women) dress "smart", it is usually because their job requires it. About ten years ago I was looking to buy a new apartment and I noticed that all the men who were showing them were dressed in a suit. Also in banks, insurance companies, that sort of thing, employees dress carefully to create a "professional" impression. But probably during their free time those same people are wearing sneakers and other casual clothes.

Most Danes only uses the churches for marrying, baptism and other traditional stuff, but most don't attend their weekly things...
      "Copenhagen isn't Denmark" Well, with over one fifth of the population lives in the Copenhagen area alone, it gives a good idea of the common people of the Danes -As a lot of people moves from the country to Copenhagen and it's nearby area making it very different to other cities in Denmark. There's so many different people from all over Denmark living there, so no wonder Copenhagen are mentioned when other countries talks about Denmark.
      Copenhagen are usually seen as more open minded towards new things, ideas and such. With a few exceptions, it's also the place where fashion, top notch hotels and the newest films are shown in cinemas, whereas the western part of Denmark (Especially Jutland and the smaller islands) are known to be very conservative and nothing really happens (One of the reasons why the young people moves to Copenhagen)

    Anyone think it's strange that Americans don't like to travel overseas "because of the two big oceans"? You'll find Aussie travellers all over the world and we are surrounded by "two big oceans". Personally, I have been to around 40 countries, including the USA five times. It takes 26+ hours to get from Oz to Europe, but only 7 hours from NY, yet I have travelled to Europe 10 times. As we have seen in other videos, many Americans can't even name another country let alone actually travel to them.

      I think Australians have a higher standard of living which affords you the ability to travel. Also there’s the whole thing with Americans not being able to get enough time off work to travel and if they do get that time they’d rather spend it with family and friends who live in the US.

      @@linmonPIE I sometimes wonder whether there are those on-line who manufacture reasons for people from the USA not travelling, rather than admit that most of them can't travel. They're the only developed country where it's not a human right to be able to take holidays, re-charge their engines, catch up on sleep...at least once a year. Nor could the average working-class family in USA afford to travel overseas. So many of them are working multiple jobs just to keep a roof above them.
      But jeez I am getting heartily sick of the ""We're so big"...meme. People keep pointing out that Oz is around the same size, is much further away from Europe than the US is, & tickets cost more. Yet Ozzy kids and parents travel all over the planet. As do Indians & Chinese people who also live on enormous continents. I'm not having a dig at either of the brothers - they've only relatively recently started to learn about the 'outside world'. But...they've both seen global maps.. I just can't fathom how is it possible to really think that square metres have anything to do with societal norms & trends in this day & age?

    • @linmonPIE
      @linmonPIE 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@cireenasimcox1081 Well, aside from what I already mentioned in my above comment for the reasons why most Americans don’t travel outside the US, is because a portion of us do have this bizarre pride thing where they really do think no other country is worth traveling to because it’s been drilled into them that America is the best country on earth so why would you ever want to leave? As cringe as that sounds.
      I once mentioned to one of my colleagues that I was going on a trip to Malaysia. She got this confused look on her face and asked me why I’d want to do that. I said because my good friend asked if I wanted to go with her back to her home country and for the experience and adventure. She still looked confused and asked me why I wouldn’t just want to take a trip here and that I could have an adventure here. I said because it’s so different there and I want to experience a different culture. She said I could experience different cultures here. I just could not get through to her. Starting grade 4 they start learning an additional 3rd language of their choice (they can chose out of 2 or 3 languages available in that particular school, and the class will be shuffled according to the kids language choices)
    Yes, and we dress smartly. Smartly means decent. Something close to formal/classy but not too formal, with a timge of casual or artistic. Sports wear and a messy bun is for lazy people who have given up and don't care anymore (it doesn't even fall under casual). Jeans are a staple for both genders as every day casual wear, usually couple with a stylish blowse for women. T shirts and tank tops for women is more on the level as sports wear. Dresses during summer are very popular. T shirts for men are great for garden barbeque or camping or a game nigh, and ok for every day wear for a teenager or younger... But for a day in the city, a nice button up shirt with a jacket definetly is a plus.

    In the UK if you tell someone they look smart it means they are wearing a really nice formal outfit. I think the American equivalent is telling someone they look fancy. A few years ago I went for dinner with an American friend. He was wearing a nice suit and I told him he looked smart. He asked me if he was dressed like a nerd. I said he was not and was incredibly confused, as was he. It took me nearly a decade to figure out our mistranslation.

    In the U.k. we got a large influx of Eastern Europeans in the mid noughties. A lot of the women wore full make up, hair done, high heels, full glamour just to go grocery shopping! And they were much slimmer than the average British woman too. 20 years on, however, they have adapted to our ways (which are basically the same as American) and now I see that full glamour less and less and they have started eating our junk food and have got bigger as a result. (the U.K. is basically the 51st State of America lol)

    It depends a lot on where in Europe you are, because the West Europeans wear much the same as he claims the Americans do (though maybe with a bit more style :P)
    There is a huge difference between countries and cultures, partly because of different standards of living (and GDP), and though the differences have decreased because of EU (and a long period of peace), they still hold true.

    I’ve had the opportunity to live in many different states in the US. In LA the women tend to be more conscientious of their looks while girls in Louisiana tend to much less so. Also, they’re much more diverse because of the culture there. But remember that since we are somewhat a product of our surroundings that’s going to happen. Everything is fried in Louisiana coupled with not much to do exercise wise unless you go to a gym. That’s evident in the fact that there are way fewer sidewalks down south. In California there are bike trails and lanes everywhere. The ocean, the mountains just so much more to do. But southern women have their own strong points when it comes to their charm and generally treating their bf/husband/other somewhat better. And the accent is pretty great. So just a study of women in America would be fun. But again, controversial.

(yes, I am angrily writing in the comment section). Fat in America? Better looking in Europe? IMO North America is actually super close to Europe genetically and culturally, as compared to any other world region.

      In French from France, ''fille'' and ''garçon'' (litterally girl and boy) are also used for adults. There can be many nuances for their use, do it is a bit hard to explain. In friendly conversations, we would not use ''man'' or ''woman'' as we use ''girl'' or ''boy''. The former can be very neutral or formal but the latter are more used in a friendly conversation to talk about the people that are here

    What most Americans don't/can't understand is that Europe is not one unit. There are 45 independent countries - each with their own culture/ethicity/economy and historical background . Each and every country has its own specialities and style. You just can't put - let's say - a Norwegian, a Portuguese, a Turkish and a Slovakian woman into one pot and expect them to look (and act) the same....
