the great thing about the internet is how it filters through artistic fads to surface truly inventive, influential music. so so glad to see Stereolab, the most underrated rock band of the 90s, make a resurgence in the musical world!!
I saw them play live to about 30 people in Reading in '97 or 98. Last year ('19) they played one of the big stages at Primavera to thousands of people at 0200. It was suitably epic.
Absolutely! I’ve been a fan of the 90s my whole life and was always aware of stereolab but never listened to them until recently. It’s so of the best music I’ve ever heard
If you can still find the CD set check out Oscillions From The Anti-Sun: it collects all of their 90's EP's and includes a DVD with all of their videos. Fun stuff! Miss you Mary!
I first hear this song driving through the Rocky Mountains travelling from Banff to Revelstoke in February. Gorgeous and treacherous. The song energizes me.
Some cuts in this video already get looped that it would not make much difference if they went with them all the way, but then again Part 2 has different lyrics... This video is neat, but a performance video would still probably be the most suitable, however they seemingly never tried to perform all the parts in any concert (including the ”out of phase” studio trickery), correct me if I am wrong.
I went to their first show in Dallas after Mary died. It was so sad. Like they were great, but rather than have someone sing her harmonies, they had someone playing a horn. Like they knew there needed to be something there but couldn't bring themselves to have someone "replace" her. I cried during half the show.
@@sidDkid87 Cool. They're special bands. Other things that must be heard are Joe Meek - I hear a New World (1st ever concept album). Silver Apples invented dance music in late 60's. Baby's On Fire by Brian Eno has the greatest ever guitar solo, played by Robert Fripp. The Pop Group's most famous songs must be heard. Most recent 'best band' I discovered is Killing Joke. They invented Grunge in 1980 with the song S036 from their 1st album. They are so good. Discovered them 6 months ago. Came back to hear them about a month ago, and discover the guitarist just died. That sucks. They were so good. Never see them play now. I was too late.. Art Bears are good. Winter Songs is a great album..
Latetia Saldier is such a hero, that I let her sell me the wrong t-shirt when I saw her solo band. She just went all “French” and I was all “ok....you’re the boss”.
@@Fopenplop Yes! I see it as the triumph of the will. Despite the darkness that our reality has sunken into ("Life on Earth is a bloody hazardous affair") one must believe in its own ability to create, one must seek challenge and stimulation to make stuff because it's the most effective way we can communicate our struggle to our peers, through honest expression. It truly is a song of hope and what's great is that early Stereolab has a lot of songs like this: uplifting yet thoughtful, blunt yet romantic, and most importantly, hopeful.
@@aubreylear 😂 I was not aware of the reference, my bad. It's not surprising though, as it's no secret that the nazis took Nietzschean concepts (which were the inspiration behind my comment) and twisted them.

I didn't know there was a video. Stereolab's music makes me think of driving fast on an urban motorway at night. Standing in a field with a tambourine isn't quite what I would have expected. Good to see them, though.

And one of my positives was to discover Stereolab two years ago while listening to an online radio station. "Ping Pong" was my introduction to The Groop.
I used to hate it when people ripped off my favourite bands. Now I listen to this and think, "You took something by Neu! and made something new and different with it? Good call. Respect."
i would hesitate to namedrop neu alone, rather the whole ‘motorik’ thing in general (which was, go figure, popilarized by klaus dinger from neu) but then also i think you’ll find their sound is similar to a band called young marble giants ! especially the song N.I.T.A from their album colossal youth. another fantastic band with similar vibes and female singer is Broadcast!
@@YellowChoklit We could both name lots of German musicians but it's hard to argue that this track isn't a direct "Hallogallo" homage specifically, I mean it even lifts the motif Personally, I prefer "Jenny"
They're back!? Playing live this year? Am i going seeing them? Oh yes. Cannot wait. And there is a much needed remaster of the brilliant TRNBWA? (all their albums are brilliant) Already pre ordered.
I'm sure that you're already in the know but Tim Gane had all of their UHF/Duophonic releases remastered and they all sound phenomenal! One of the most unique groops in the history of modern recording!

My youth along with Bloody Valentine , Ride , Wedding Present , Spacemen 3 and other LO-Fi bands 1991 1992 so good
You have amazing taste in music.
Add Spiritualized, Pulp, and Suede to that list and there's my coming of age soundtrack. All of them are still in heavy rotation on my turntable.
One of those bands I had to risk buying the CD without ever hearing but I read about them so much I had to know. And was blown away.

I love Latisha I miss Mary

Seems mad that I've owned this record for a quarter of a century, but only now am I seeing the promo video.
@Kristan Reed Same here! One of my favorite bands for about that long 😌

Best band of the 90's and early 00's!
their live shows through the mid 1990s were the best any uk band did
Them and unwound
R.I.P. Mary Hansen
Also someone needs to do a full 18-minute video for the entire song.

Hallo Gallo with Beach Boys harmonies, John Cale-like drones and shoegaze guitars. I love it
Like Hawkwind, with girls.
The art of making a verses and chorus with the same rhytm and notes and not being musically boring.
*yet another band that I discovered 20 years too late - great stuff!!!*
Likewise. How did Stereolab completely escape my attention as a 90s teen? They're brilliant

One of the very, very few positives of the pandemic was giving the me the time and need to re-discover bands I loved in the 90s...
And one of my positives was to discover Stereolab two years ago while listening to an online radio station. "Ping Pong" was my introduction to The Groop.
This track and "French Disko" are so refreshing and works of genius in my humble opinion.
Discovered today watching better call saul - love this!
Seen the groop 4 times but only have 3 concert t-shirts.
LOVE this band! I remember exactly where I was when new of Mary's passing hit me.
Michael Clifford is a great director. Also great song. Great band
One of their best
Transient random noise burts using my opinion their best

Not even reiteration and antidistablishmentarianism. Sigh. Pedantic, pedantic, pedantic...a big , big love.
