- Never a hit but it was frequently played on Junior Choice on BBC Radio in the 60's to 80's.
The Southlanders were a Jamaican/ British band formed in 1950 consisting of Vernon Nesbeth, Frank Mannah, and brothers Harold (Harry) and Allan Wilmot. Harry and Allan were father and uncle respectively of comedian, actor and singer Gary Wilmot.
Harry was the deep bass voice for the mole, he died in 1961 of a brain tumour, Gary was just 6 at the time.
I have been trying to get a clean 78 rpm copy of this for years, eventually I gave in and got this almost mint 45 rpm copy to tide me over. Видеоклипы
This is the first childhood memory i have, must have been 1958 as i remember this being on the radio a lot.
I loved this track, and my gran used to play it for me on the old gramophone (something the size of a chest freezer) located in the back room due to its size. It was mono, and the speaker was in the living room, so I'd run back to hear it! I sill have the old 45 - was left to me 40 years ago now.
20 Oct 2021 - Allan Wilmot original member of The Southlanders died this morning. He was 96 years old.
This is one of my earliest radio memories - 'Junior Choice' probably, always loved it.
Al with reference to your comment above - I can send you a photo of my 78 of this if you like...😆😆
There's nothing clever about gloating young man, now go and stand in that corner ha ha
@@OldiesAl ...can I take me record player with me..?
Oh ok if you promise more great uploads next week
@@OldiesAl ...well it's a stretch but I suppose someone's got to do it...:-)
I loved it in the 50s & I'm delighted to rediscover it now!
I have never heard this after I left England in 1965. Like much younger, I loved this song. Thanks Al
Thanks Robert, I hope you've been good this week to get this treat plus a third version of Davy Crockett.
This is fantastic,so playful and fun,I don't think I 've heard it before, but I am sure glad I did this Sunday morning. Thanks Al...👏👍👌
An early radio memory for me Alex, I couldn't find out who recorded it for years and trying to find a 78 issue in nice condition at a reasonable price is proving difficult
@@OldiesAl ...😀
Stop it 🤣🤣
My kid brother once came to the door with Mum when he was little, saw lyr butcher Sammy Mole and said "I am a mole and I live in a hole" like the song! Mum was mortified
Nice fun tune here...Good Harmony !
They were a good harmony group but never seemed to get that big break.
Great fun record this, made me smile...
This one always raises a smile
Oh okay cool thanks for the info
haha my grandad used to play this to me on his guitar all the time,
Haven't heard that in years ha ha great upload, someone I know or used to know possibly dead now used to say that a lot but I can't place who , thanks for the memory mind trip :)
Catching up on uploads and comments, as I can't do much else to be honest. Thanks Paul. I'd forgotten all about it then it just popped into my head, I've spent years looking for a good 78 copy but gave in and got this 45 vg copy
RIP Allan Wilmot, jamaican-born british singer ("The Southlanders") and World War II veteran (96) ;-(
junior choice classic
Oh yes hardly a week went past without it being played
"Gets you right THERE"...
I remember this well, but don't think its been heard for years. Wonder if there was another version as I don't recall the Caribbean accents.
I can't find or ever remember hearing any other version Paul
@@OldiesAl Ronnie Hilton covered it. It’s on an LP of Children’s songs from the 60s
@@home756 I will continue to hold that album in my citadel and will not release it unless a King's ransom is paid
Often sung on BBC Playschool programme in the early 1970s, which was where I first heard it - British children's TV was dominated by RP at that time!
That sounds like a Gretsch guitar and a tape echo.
