Great analysis, and I believe you got most things right.
Two things:
1: The girl riding the dragon is not IU herself but Sulli, one of her friends who passed in 2019. And I think the dragon is supposed to be SHINee's Jonghyun who passed in 2017.
In that dream of being on the plane she sees Sulli and Dragon-Jonghyun fly by and sheds a tear, knowing that they're in a better place now and the suffering they had to endure in life is finally over. At least, that's how I would interpret it.
2: eight is part of a series of songs where IU reflects on what was going on in her life and how she was feeling at a certain age. The other songs in this series are Twenty-three (2015), Palette (2017) and Lilac (2021).
I love this song. Depending on my mood it either makes me a bit sentimental or it makes me completely bawl my eyes out. But it's that good kind of sadness where I feel a lot better after I've let it all out. I could probably count the number of songs that can do that to me on one hand.
And IU is just an incredible artist. Modern Times and Lilac are perhaps two of my favourite albums ever, even beyond Kpop.
I definitely needed a minute to chill after this reaction, the ending literally took my breath away, I wanted to talk about the subject of suicide as I'm quite familiar with it, in fact, my dad's gift for my 18th birthday was in fact just that, a suicide, thankfully I wasn't there to witness it as we lived in different countries, but I really wanted to talk about this subject but I ended up staring at the camera for 10 minutes straight and I wasn't able to find the words, which is quite rare for me hehe. Anyway, this is definitely one of the most beautiful songs I've heard but it's definitely a tough one to go through.

The ending scene had a lot to say, first looks sad and you hear " so are you happy now" like she's asking to her friends and she smiles, then her smile fading away and she looks a bit angry and you hear "finally happy now you" like she's asking haters that they are happy now
This is very important, most people miss it the first time
sulli and jonghyun's deaths were the biggest losses of kpop to date.. iu has lost a lot but then again looking at how much hate SHE herself constantly gets she fought through it so that she could reminisce over her friends passing as she knows nobody will ever acknowledge them the way she does.. just looking back at how much she went through and still does its chilling and makes me admire her more everytime (also the dragon represents jonghyun :))
I find it difficult to watch this mv...I always cry. I've been a fan of SHINee, f(x), Kara and IU since the 2nd gen days. I noped out of everything kpop related for a few years after Jonghyun's death...so I didn't even hear about Sulli and Hara til later. I remember thinking 'poor IU' at the time, since it was well known that she was friends with all of them.
Some stories about their friendship:
-IU met Hara at an audition for JYP when they were 14. She said that she was struck by Hara's beauty even then.
-Jonghyun wrote the song Gloomy Clock in the middle of the night because he suffered from insomnia and emailed it to IU for her opinion. It was supposed to be on his debut solo album but after hearing it, IU asked if she could have it lol. He ended up giving it to her and featuring.
-IU has actually written a few songs about Sulli. Her songs Peach and Red Queen are about Sulli. After Sulli passed, she changed the lyrics to Red Queen during her concert to pay tribute
Wanna add about gloomy clock, iu actually asked to buy it, but jonghyun gave it to her as a gift 🥺

"The song I'll be releasing is a song about a sad yearning that stems from returning to the same place, not being able to move on, and keep getting lost in thoughts. The reason the song is called 'Eight' from the beginning is I wanted to express my state as a 28-year-old. As I did for 'Twenty-three' or 'Palette,' I sometimes try to reflect my age in my songs so I wanted to do the same this time,"
"While I'm not sure whether it’s from my personal emotion or from the overall social atmosphere coming from the disaster (context : pandemic and lockdown), my 28 would be remembered by the recurring feeling of lethargy and longing for the 'orange island' where we felt freedom rather than sadness."

so yeah, we need 23, Palette, and later Lilac (age series) to look Eight at more wholesome way
also there are few other songs related to Eight (unofficially) : Gloomy Clock (2013), The Station (2018/ 2021), and Strawberry moon (2021)
The girl in the white dress is not IU but Sulli and the dragon is Jonghyun. IU she stays on the plane and watches her friends finally free to fly, she feels calmer this way, because she knows they are together... and every time she closes her eyes she will find them in her dreams. And it is so strange that such cheerful music hides such painful words. I always cry, and every time.
really enjoyed this reaction, especially because you actually really analyzed the music video and lyrics instead of just listening to the song and being like "mm yeah great song!" like a lot of other youtubers do. iu writes the lyrics for almost all of her songs, and she's known for her really great songwriting ability, so i think paying attention to the lyrics is especially important and gives you a lot of insight into what she's actually communicating with her songs. like with this one, the melody of eight seems really uplifting and happy, but the lyrics are actually quite sad. iu is the reason i really want to learn korean because i think being able to understand her beautiful lyrics in the language they're written in would give everything a whole other layer.
also you should definitely check out “my sea”. it’s basically a song iu wrote about herself, and it’s so beautiful and emotional, the lyrics, the melody, the instrumentals, everything. of course all of iu’s songs have amazing lyrics but i think “my sea” is definitely one of the best. i’ve listened to it so many times already but every time i’m still amazed.

A few random things; The memory machine seems like the one in the 2004 movie The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Sulli had a role in one episode of the 2019 tv series Hotel Del Luna, which stars IU. I also hold to the theory that Sulli is the girl who jumps off the island, and the Jonghyun is the lizard/ dragon. I don't have a view of whether Goo Hara is part of the imagery, although DKDTV has a view on this. This is a very powerful song, especially to those of us who have lost people to suicide. The "So are you happy now" line can be addressed to a number of persons - IU herself, those who took their lives, and those internet haters and trolls who made their lives miserable. Because of the last point, I also connect this song to Dreamcatcher's Boca, although that is probably just me.
I always crying on this song bc it's remind me about my cousin who passed away suddenly 12 years ago, few month before her 21 birthday... she was 1 year younger than me and we had a lot of memories together

The girl in white flying on the lizard is Sulli. IU's the one in the airplane. For the country home memory scenes IU hired Sulli's stylist. The happy scenes were IU's memories of Sulli.
In fact, IU does not give an explicit explanation of the meaning of the scenes in her mv's because she wants to give everyone a chance to conclude what they felt after watching them, I really liked your interpretation of the scenes, because it was very similar to mine
Here is a key thing to know more about IU , it's like this when ever IU sings plays music and writes music it is taken from real life and the lives of those around her . This song is about the things she did with her closes friends that ended up taking their own lives but IU will always have those loving memoires of her close friends that will never end until that day they meet again ...

Can you imagine being on IU’s level in social status. You wont meet much genuine people, what more friends. So you cherish those very few friendships you can form in a brutal industry then you lose them consecutively😢

I don't know if you notice at the ending. she showed 3 different facial expressions. sadness, relief and the last coldness. that coldness looks straight to the camera and at the same time the echo goes like, [ so are you happy now] telling to those hate comment bullies who took the live of her friends, idols who committed suicides.

Jeju Island is Orange Island, famous for 🍊. Thats where IU’s family is from. Maybe thats where her and her friends go to for breaks from entertainment life. And when they are there theyre free to be themselves away from public life. “No shadows” or no worries and problems to think about them just enjoying the vacation and living in the moment. Also IU’s favorite TV show she did was Hiyori’s Bed and Breakfast in Jeju Island. Where she got her destined break, literally she dreamt about it years before and the show happened

I would recommend you to watch the theory explanation of "Eight" MV by DKDKTV, and actually she continued to perform when that tragic news hits her, I would recommend you to watch the part of she sang "Dear Name", you can see clearly how she actually felt at that time. I'll be back to write the link later
There is even more to this MV than the guys at DKDK TV talk about in their explanation video, and those missed messages make this video even more powerful.
Here are just a few examples. 1) the 2d animated girl in White is Sulli. The 2d animation is done for a reason, which is to show that the 3d animated IU on the plane exist in a different world than the 2d Sulli. When the animated Sulli is shown running, it is a carefree joyful running, it is a purposeful and determined running, as if she was late for a meeting. When she comes to the black wall, this represents the divide between the worlds of the li ing and the dead. She parts the wall and enters the world of the living. But why? Why is Sulli so determined to reach that point and for what purpose. So before going on we need to go back. Early in the song IU says she doesn't want to love anyone anymore, but they just come and go as they please. Whatever the reason(s) why these 3 took their own lives an unintended consequence is what those deaths do to the ones left behind. In IU cases it left her with not wanting to love anyone. Sulli didn't mean for her action to have this kind of impact and she is determined to undo some of it. Hence, she is racing to pass through the black barrier and enter the world of the living to see IU and tell her Goodbye and that she is sorry. While IU smiles at seeing Sulli, Sulli's expression is one of concern and sorrow.
There more but that gives you an idea about how much more their is to this video.
this reaction really made me want to crying being reminded that phase bec. of the very eventful memory.. treasured friends she no longer able to see only in her memories and dreams.. 😢

I can't even imagine what kind of heartbreak it would be to have three of her close friends end her life by suicide.

It is sad and regrettable for both them and IU.
I wish them all only happiness in the future.

if you look at every video of her, it tells you a story, it's totally cinematic. I really wish you would react more to iu. I've seen all the videos since Thursday and I'm done, I don't usually comment much. but this is the first time iu is my favorite singer and actress and really. Many of her songs brought me out of my depression and thanks to her. I'm better thanks again and sorry for my english.
