  • Crossing the Mediterranean on a sailboat from Malta to Spain: 900 nautical miles in 6 days!
Video of how we dealt with my burn at sea: • 2nd degree burn at sea...
We started our crossing from Malta, where we had been spending a couple of weeks prior to departure. The weather conditions were absolutely perfect for an East to West sailing passage at sea, with downwind all the way.
Although we had to motor the first day, the rest of the passage was for the most part as glorious as it was uneventful. On the 5th day, I burned my leg while making coffee, and we considered re-routing the boat to get me to a hospital. But all things considered, we were fairly well equipped to deal with the injury until we’d arrived at destination, and we continued to Almerimar.
This is our absolute longest video to date, and we hope you’ll enjoy it!

No, I haven’t burned myself twice, I had just made a longer video about the incident two months ago 😉
Right after I went to the doctor, I bought myself a very nice coffee pot that doesn’t require me to handle boiling water! Love the new coffee pot, loved how my burn has been healing (thanks guys for asking!) and I still very much love being at sea :)
    Cheers from Gibraltar! /Sophie

So glad your burn turned out to only be a little war wound rather then a huge scar, that was awful and made me wince just watching.
I have probably said before but the real feel you have with this channel is priceless and gives you a polished shine in the reality stakes.
Look forward catching up some more on my happy binge moment.
    Take care and Fair winds.

When my family and I did the great loop in the USA...when we would see dolphins give us an escort...my kids would call them (the dolphins) the police of the sea “giving us a police escort”...they felt it was an honor and a sign of good luck!! Minus Sophie’s coffee incident, I’d say it was a good way to close the chapter on the “season”. I’m so looking forward to the Atlantic crossing and cant wait to see what the tropical islands bring us by way of videos. Stay safe and enjoy your time off

As a crew of two on longer passages we don´t shift watches and we make longer watches during the night. My wife Sabina goes to bed just after dinner about 7pm and I have the watch to 2:30 -3:30, it depends how I feel and than we shift. Now I am so tired that I fell to asleep immediately and can sleep till 8.00 to 9.00 am. Thats enough for me, I never sleep longer than 6 hours a day. Under daytime we now who has to look every ten minutes around. After a few days it feels normal and you get tired when your watch ends.
And for downwindsailing we have a second forestay that we can rig in a few minutes for the fock and two poles. Now you have the possibility to change your sailplan very easy, full sail, genua rolled a little bit or away or fock away. Only for fock away you have to go out of the cockpit. On our atlantic crossing we didn´t use our main for just a minute.

Absolutely excellent video. Worth every minute. I think you did a great job introducing Fabienne to the unique qualities of off shore sailing - especially night sails and watches. It's so much different because of the exhaustion factor. I've got a passage coming up from the BVIs to Denmark with four of us on board - I'm already anticipating the 100 lb. eyelids.

Oh dear, already burned again with a hot liquid? I hope you feel better.
The kitchen is probably nothing for you. ;) Ryan sure wants to do it for you.
May be a French Press or an Italian coffee machine for the gas stove is not that dangerous.

I occasionally am asked why I’m grumpy when, in fact, I’m quite happy. It’s just the way my face relaxes. As an aside, a modern Asian philosopher observed that “North Americans must be unhappy because they’re always smiling”. You can’t always judge a book by its cover. 😜⛵️🇨🇦

Sophie you made realize something, that dolphins are not caught on a fishing line they never take the bait, very smart ones they are. : ) peace

They have hit fish that I’ve hooked when bottom fishing and accidentally got hooked. When this happens they brake the rod and ruin reel in seconds and are gone.

This is hilarious! The fish know you want to catch them. It's the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour all over again. The taunting, the teasing. But, one day the fish will have become overly confident. Ryan will cross his learning curve, and one overly confident fish will be carefully and skillfully swung onto the deck to be renamed "dinner" as Sophie refers to the fish she talks to. Be warned you cunning fish. Sailors are rookies/apprentice fisherman only for a time.

Do you really have to wear the lifejackets all the time ? No one else does. Lovely stuff.
