He used all this time as the character artist and villain to hone his style to get the "badass" impressions with his cigarette-popping and other styles. He started literally from the bottom of the industry (in terms of roles given), and rose to the very top.
You missed the important scene neelambari placing her foot on Soundarya's face. It became big talk of the town back then. Soundaya was like a lady superstar specially in tollywood and many telugu fans didn't like that scene later she calmed her fans saying it's just a acting and no one should take it personally. Gem of a person she was 💔

I think you both need to watch "Basha" movie of Rajnikanth. It is a cult epic. I don't know how many 100s of movies were made with same inspiration in Indian film journey.
