You gotta ask the right questions. He's been in hotels answering questions about sex scenes with Lady Gaga for weeks. Ask him about his AITAF project and boom 💥
I remember an interview where Driver said, "It's not the job of the actor to make the audience feel a certain emotion. All we can do is play the role and let you as the viewer decide what to feel." Love that he takes his art so seriously and isn't afraid to talk about it so deeply.
This is what makes Colbert a pro. Driver is obviously not all that comfy doing the talk show thing. Just as obvious he's passionate about his project. Stephen lets him talk about that at length. So we the audience get to see a side of Driver that we were probably unaware of. A nicely done interview.
I heard he is really sweet. I wish I could have met him during my service. I used to watch Girls in my dorm room at my first base. One of his best roles in my opinion. I miss South Korea too 😢.
Theater is perhaps the oldest form of therapy: we take our conflicts and traumas, and reenact them in a safe environment. The ancients spoke of _catharsis_ in drama, the purging and purification of our desires and fears: that is still true in the best plays.
Well, when you talk about mental health directly it almost implies that there’s something wrong with people’s heads. When you talk about an outlet and a way of life, it implies that we need to facilitate a healthy environment, which is a better focus. I think.
I love Stephen Colbert. I think this is the most engaged I've ever seen Adam Driver in an interview. It comes down to having a real conversation. There's no phoniness. It's so refreshing.
Adam Driver: Pours his heart out for a cause he's deeply passionate about Colbert: 5:00 Drops a beautiful powerfully introspective quote about a connection between the human existence and film Class all around, what an interview!
What a privilege to hear Adam Driver speak on this topic with such clarity and conviction. Brilliant. More of this, less of the predigested fake convos. Trust your guest, they give you gems.
He’s really in his element when he talks about theatre. You can see that’s his true passion because his articulation becomes fluid with no stuttering or pausing.
If you understand what Adam is saying you would know for a fact that he is a genius at what he does. Such enlightening words and take on art. Can't love this dude enough ❤️
Adam’s insight about knowing your role in your unit, and if the person leading knows what they are doing what your doing feels active, relevant, and necessary is a test to apply to any leader and job.
It was one of the great privileges of my life to see Adam Driver on Broadway in BURN THIS 3x. His love for his craft, while evident in his films, shines most brightly on the stage, and he was enthralling and captivating. The fact that he wants to foster that same love in the very people nobody ever thinks about when considering the demographic for the theater arts is just one reason why Adam Driver is, as Martin Scorsese called him, "one of the finest, if not THE finest, of his generation."
Adam brought me to tears. In the 70's, I used to teach GI's stationed in Germany who hadn't finished high school. I am an English teacher but there I taught history and political science. I have relatives in what was then Czechoslovakia. My guys had no idea what they were protecting when they went on watch over the border, or why Russian soldiers were on the other side looking at them, or how the lives of the Czechs were so curtailed by the Russian presence. Civilians with interest and heart, exactly like this thing that Jon and Adam did is real life. They were all about going back to "the World." I tried in my small way, not as powerful as Jon Batiste and Adam Driver, to bring the troops exactly the same thing. It also is a unifying force to bring all people of the Real World together. Both of these people are absolutely brilliant.
Thank you! It’s a lot easier to look back on it now than it was to deal with the men who were in the trenches every day. I was a teacher for 37 years BESIDES the three years I spent with these men. I taught in the inner city in Minneapolis before I went to Germany. It was perfect preparation because most of these men had been there in some city and were truly ready to learn how to move forward in their lives. I never felt more appreciated as a teacher. I have lived in Berlin for 31 years and taught here for 22 of the 40 years.
@@billiey36 I agree. Thank you, Kathleen, for all you did. I know it win't go unnoticed. I believe a good teacher never does. And you sound like a great one :)
smart cookie; picked up that tidbit of information on another occasion about him, but it again and again is such a balm for the soul to hear someone express themselves so eloquently! I could listen to Adam Driver all day. Great voice, even greater character, zero ego. Absolutely amazing. There clearly must be something in the water at Julliard.
Jon batiste suddenly gets deep and slows down when talking about personal and more serious subjects. Is nice to see a glimpse of what type of conversations he and Stephen and all his personal friends might have. They are high quality individuals that would be nice to meet in person(away from the TV stuff) for sure .
One of the best and most sincere interviews I have seen Colbert do. Adam Driver is a breath of fresh air. Complex, salt of the earth, great speaker, driven and humble. Thank you!
As an ex service person I really needed to hear this today. I totally understand some of my behaviours now as I don't cry I just get to a point of being overwhelmed and then get fired up. I just love how he stripped it right back and made it easy to understand. Perhaps my therapist should watch this guy and get some tips.
Adam and Jon have done a great thing here. Art is a reflection of society. Because the arts include various branches of painting, music, literature, dance, theatre, and other creative activity, they have a significant impact on society, religion, and education, thus deserve the same reverence bestowed upon the sciences.
Loved Adams articulation of how the Arts be it via movies , live theater, music or other forms of expression can touch a place within us that releases emotions we may not otherwise know how to express!! Very enlightening!
I love Adam for really being so articulate and hitting home why movies / theater can be so therapeutic for many people and for Steve Colbert for just allowing him to speak his mind without interrupting him because it is captivating watching another person speak passionately about a subject they hold so dear. And I like that Colbert makes Adam feel comfortable during the interview to have that space to speak freely.
Adam is SO on it, as far as Veterans expressing themselves through theater. In MY rural area, an area the recruiters ZERO IN ON, when our Veterans come home, all their friends really know to do is to say, "Hey Buddy, Welcome home, let's go drink some beer!" Thus 21 a day, Veteran suicides.
I absolutely LOVED this interview. It is SUCH a joy to see someone in love with what they do!! And Stephen *masterfully* let him talk about it. This is what an interview is supposed to be. Just awesome.
I saw this last night. I was going to shut off the TV to go to bed; I don't really know a lot about Adam Driver, apart from John Oliver's...how do I say it?... attentions. Then Driver started talking about the power of the theatre for audiences & all involved, and I was knocked out. I like going to plays, but didn't even think about things like the breathing of the audience, etc. Powerful thoughts! Glad I watched.
Adam Driver is very wise and insightful and nailed it when he said that not enough emphasis is placed in articulating emotions and how healing that is to veterans, and any human. Arts are so important for healing. Great interview
Adam Driver is one of those actors who can afford to be so selective that the mere act of his casting makes me believe a movie is worth seeing. Bravo sir, and thank you.
Adam's comments were absolutely wonderful! I especially love how he said that theater can save your life, unapologetically. He's amazing and always a joy to see on the show.
What an incredible idea and individual is Adam Driver. A gem of a human being. Thanks Stephen for letting Adam speak and share these delicate intricate thoughts. No surprise he and Jon are friends. Thank you Stephen for bringing us the best of humanity.♥️ Cheers from 🇨🇦

Thanks, guys, from someone who has done her share of acting, and the wife of a Vietnam vet. ❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼💥
Have never seen Driver so talkative in an interview. Mutual respect breeds golden moments.
Colbert's best interviews are with people he has a rapport with, and Driver is definitely comfortable with him

He's really passionate about what he does.
He feels at home with Jon, too. I'm sure that helps.
True
Hats off to Stephen for allowing Adam to speak freely. Other interviewers just interrupt em every 10 seconds.
Absolutely. Stephen is hands down the best and funniest of the late night talk show hosts. I don't get how he doesn't have more subscribers on here.

Exactly! And I admire those men who have rejected the view that showing empathy & compassion demonstrates weakness.
What about Rachel Weisz? I think she's more attractive, personally. But maybe second to her.
Which is why we love both Adam and JB!
Ameeen!
What a guy. So refreshing to see a thoughtful movie star.
I like Adam as a person and actor but hated him as kylo.... to be fair it was probably the rest of the movie who ruined his performance for me.
His Ted talk was an eye-opener.
Wow, his regard for the importance of thoughtful communication is very evolved. ✌
Not to mention that he is one of the best SNL hosts of all time.
I absolutely agree. I'm absolutely astounded by this interview. I usually watch this show to disengage but im raveling into this conversation.
I met Adam Driver a few years ago when he did a play at our base in S. Korea. It left quite an impression on me.
