I've been playing this game a fair bit the past few days and it is damn good. It also kicks your ass, the worst of which is with lockpicking. Here is my complete guide to lockpicking, to take you from dreading it, to being a master of it :)

They changed the lockpicking mechanism for console user in the recent update. You can used the Simplfied version by going to game settings in the pause menu in game. It is way easier now to lockpick.

Intellectual Capacity it’s because of how the joystick’s dead zone is used to determine where we are picking which is dumb af, it is waaay too sensitive. If the pick stays in the spot you leave it in, then it would be easier to just adjust the position of it, rather than always pulling back to the center.
Nobody is asking the lockpicking to be a Skyrim clone...we just don't want it to be Dark Souls in the form of a lockpicking minigame -_-

I spent 2.5 hours reloading at the mill trying to get the chest picked. Just once. Once.
I unlocked the chest after 20min and thought "Alright ! I should practice more" and reload just before so I did... Then I spent an hour and half failing and crying "I should have get the f* out! Whyyyy am I so dumb !"

Great guide. One more tip: When you start the lockpicking game and dont like the position of the sweet spot, just exit and start again, then the golden spot will be in a different location. Exiting doesnt break lockpicks and this kind of cheesy method helped me a lot at early levels.

There is a perk in the Drinking Tree called *Luck of the Drunk*
Makes lockpicking easier but also noisier. The noise is mitigated by the *Silent Fiddler* perk from lockpicking.
In the end, drink some wine before picking a lock and you are golden.

@@masterbrute5302 I put the lockpicking on easy and still can't pick one, so I don't know if it's the mechanics or me. Stuck in the first town for now, and I tried choking out a guard to steal his armor (undetected, mind you), but as soon as I put that armor on everyone in town all of a sudden knew I stole it.

@@6ixlxrd i have the same problem, but to bypass talmberg, i grab my horse, plenty of arrows and bow and then jump into the moat and ride off as quick as possible before they sound the alarm and the outside guards begin to follow you
Something i feel every beginner should know *** rotate the lock as quickly as possible because sitting idle (even if its in the gold) will cause your pick to break

Another little tip: when you start lock picking, if the sweet spot is in a difficult position (near the outside of the ring), just back out of lock picking and then restart. This changes the position of the sweet spot. Keep doing it until it’s in the position you’re most comfortable with.
Sounds like an ultimate time killer considering how slow locking in and backing out is.. it's a real cluster fuc
@@terrencekelly3286 it's very easy, i mean harder than skyrim but still easy. In skyrim you can lockpick master chests from lvl1, in vanilla i never invested any points into lockpicking and enjoyed it immensely.

It's so funny how Oblivion has one of the most realistic lock picking mini-games, but it's not accurate to what the keys look like in game.
Funny enough i played Oblivion on both PC and PS3 and in comparison the lockpicking is much easier in console. Completely diefferent to KC:D

On console, you can change the control for rotating the lock from a joystick to a bumper. It’ll move at a constant speed

Sounds good on paper, but then you don't have as much control and need to be even more precise (and faster) with the sweetspot. Honestly, didn't make lockpicking any less dogshit than the original way to do it

Go to settings and turn on simplified lock picking. That’s what I use and it’s very easy when this is enabled
Voltava's inventory refreshes daily as soon as he moves to the pond, begins fishing and out of Talmberg castle, this happens as soon as Henry escapes. There are three millers that sell lockpicks, and lock picks are on inventory of all high level bandits and guards while looting in Skalitz. Lockpicking is not terrible, if you practice. Warhorse made it a lot easier nearly a year ago.
This genuinely was fantastically helpful. I bought this game because corona has hit UK and I'm off from university but I was getting so mad at the picking, thank you!
As soon as you can open hard chests, go to the monastery on the right side go back to the far right door. Let the locking fun begin 🙂. There's enough chests/doors to level you instantly to unlocking very hard. Just discovered this on another play through 😅🤷🏼♂️

Took the weekend but I'm a Master now, thanks to you, i stopped playing last year because i was impatient with this game, now I'm loving it Thank your guides are great. Ps that chest has only a few swords ect, but its a great chest to practise on. It glitches sometimes to pick it multiple times also.

A tip. Use mouse and keyboard when lockpicking. Using xbox controller is impossible.

Learn to read, read the lockpicking skill book, break some picks on easy chests and bam hit lvl 3. Its easy after lvl 3
For console players, start the left stick from the bottom rotating counter clockwise to the top. (From 6 to 12)

I just saw something to help everyone in settings under game settings there's a setting to turn on simplefied lock picking making lb turn the lock instead of the left stick

Can’t wait to try it! I’m reading this at 12:45 am bc I have never had this much difficulty with a game! And that’s a compliment to the developers...finally, something that truly challenges us! Yeah, it’s a game but like it or not, it makes you think about how you truly react to difficulties and challenges irl! I see so many comparisons to archery etc. on here and they’re accurate!

U saved the game
Thats not what deft grip does! It makes it so you have to turn the lock for about a quarter less bc as you can see when you unlock the perk, the lock is already a quarter way open reducing the time you have to hold D and therefore reducing the chance of failure. How many hours did you play you said?

I'm so glad I'm on PC. As soon as you mentioned how much easier mouse and keyboard was I switched to that for lockpicking and it because a breeze. Definitely feels like it was balanced around that.

The thing about lockpicking, at least for me, is once you get a feel for it and get the muscle memory down, it never goes away. I played KCD a lot like a year ago, and I just came back to it last week with a new playthrough and I was popping locks from the beginning
I have close to 100 platinumed games. I beat every souls game at level 1. I am nearly maxed in old school RuneScape. Yet, i cant open one single lock. Makes me not want to play this otherwise excellent game..
Few tips you forgot... You can get a lockpick in Skallitz from Matthew (him and Fritz are your best friends) and open Kunesh's chest. The training chest at the mill resets after few days and can be opened 10 times again. The sweet spot position is random so if it's too far on the edge just stand up and try again. Also, with Steam Controller you can set up right pad to mouse and right pad press to "D" making picking locks a breeze.
Anyone watching within the past few months from this comment, if you’re on console you can go into the settings and change the lockpocking to a more simplified version where you use L1 to turn the lock instead of the left analog stick. So much easier!

You can just close the lock picking screen and re open it until the gold spot is close to the centre. As many times as you like. It will then be far far easier to pick.
Just what I needed. I haven’t picked a single lock in this game after the very first attempt. Made the game feel sparser.
Good summary - however I strongly disagree on ur 2nd perk choice. At this point you are likely trained enough that its not much of a difference for u as a player to have or not to have deft grip. However the luck of the drunk perk means that you can suddenly pick harder locks if you are drunk which are otherwise not available. That is so much better! It enables me to try my game on very hard locks (if drunk) while sober I could only go for hard trunks etc.
For anyone having trouble its all about skill levels, do some of the millers quests early, practice in farms on easy locks (doors chests), slowly work your way to ninja.. lock picking is very easy later in the game (have not broken a lock pick yet)

Thalie haha, are you serious? It's just twisted: They simulated the lockpicking quite realistic on the console with TWO linear moving parts, but couldn't simulate that on a static keybord, the only one linear moving part here is the mouse.
And how the fuck did you manage that. I am at Talmberg and the game expects to pick this chest in the gatehouse to get the armour I need to sneak out of town. I mean it's hard enough to do with the freaking guards coming in every 15 damn seconds but the actual locking pick interface itself is shite.

Ps4 users: in game settings there is a lock simplification setting, which allowed me to pick locks. (now I'm stuck on pick pocketing fml)
I use both a mouse and a controller(simultaneously) to pick locks, they're easy as pie that way. The controller determines how fast the locks spins(which sucks with the D key) and the mouse is much easier to keep the ball in the sweet spot than it is with a controller.

On console I found the easiest way to lockpick was to put your palm down on the left stick and rotate the stick with your palm while moving the right stick and keeping it in the sweet spot. Works most of the time

You can get 4 lockpicks from fritz in the starting zone if you do this correctly. Do not buy the charcoal until you do this or it wont work. First go to kunesh and attempt to retrieve the hammer and nails but do not win the fight. Alternatively you can choose a dialogue option with Kunesh that avoids fighting and still get the lockpicks. After that go to fritz after helping him throw dung at a house. After that ,he will have an option to help Henry and give him 4 lockpicks. You can begin leveling lockpicking before you even leave skalitz.

I picked two hard locks today using Padfoot potion. Broke one pick getting the feel but got the second lock on the first try.
It was exhilarating.
I rest the controller on a nonskid surface and brace it with my left hand. I test my right wrist lightly on the controller to give me control and freedom to rotate the stick, but some control for a nice even following of the turning cylinder.

I just practiced on the millers box over and over until it wouldn’t let me anymore, lock picking becomes pretty easy and I’m on console.

Yeah you can actually do it more than 10 times.
So from what I have seen and read if you happen to be playing with a controller you are basically screwed with doing any lock picking. I mean i see Camel do it and the lock moves seamlessly but when i try with a controller it jumps around and shakes which makes it almost unpredictable.

Genuinely give up and will sell the game. I’m sure that I will actually be missing out on a great game, but I tried everything with the lockpicks. Watched guides, turned off vibration, etc...

Don't give up on the game yet my dude. If you have the console version, wait for the 1.3 patch to officially go through on consoles if it hasn't yet. The developers know the lockpicking for consoles is unfairly difficult, and they've addressed the issue in that patch. Once the patch goes through... give lockpicking one more try.
Now buy a PC and buy this game for PC. Congrats, you are no longer a peasant and able to game properly. ;-p

The patch did shit for lockpicking and only made combat harder, as if it weren't hard enough already.
I'm on a PS4 and it's impossible. Cannot turn the mechanism AT ALL. And that's on the first chest in the guard tower, which is supposed to be very easy.

ive picked a lick with a bibby pin and a paperclip...it was awesome just for fun..old gun case with list key that belonged to my brother the door was already open thiugh so more difficult with an unsteady door

Nope. That's a lot more playable and a lot less punishing. Also Bethesda's gameworlds are better designed and less empty.
A lot of KDs world is just empty space with procedurally generated encounters, from bunnies to fights. Bethesda actually builds their worlds.
Also it's a different type of game offering a different experience, making your comment as silly as saying "This formula 1 car drives faster than a bicycle"

Why does everything in this game have to be overly complicated?
Recently started Kingdom Come, nd lockpicking has become a useful tool for me after sleeping on it for a while. It becomes incredibly easy when u start levelig the lockpick skill up, and there is a perk I aquired which makes lockpicking 30% easier while drunk, with a downside of it being 30% noisier, which really doesnt affect you. This perk is amazing, very hard locks i was unable to interact with, became a breeze after enabling the perk. The skill is broken, and with it I went from 1k groshcen to 17k groshen in under a day by continously robbing the weaponsmith, and armoursmith of rattay.
I think we should all rejoice! in the wonder that is a lock-picking system that isn't a skyrim clone!

None or this move the left thumb stick and try to keep the right stick movie at the same time. Nonsense. Which yes it is interesting. Yet it is no balanced between the two modes of playing.

Honestly the best tip I can give anyone is to turn down the dpi of the mouse if your mouse supports that. Around 600 at Full HD should be fine. This has helped me out do much

For PC - Kinda old now, but one other thing, Steam messed up the controller support, I hated this game. I changed the settings in Steam, but it never felt "right". Bought this on GOG, and the controller support is from the devs and works way better. But this guide should really help you if you are new to the game. So many people just give up and quit because it's too hard. Practice and learn. I learnt all of this on my own weeks ago, because I didn't want to quit what promised to be such a great game and I bought it 2x. Oh, and if you start with your left thumb @ about 3 o'clock, you can get a better turn on the thumbstick. I just watched cuz Camel
The best advice for xbox(which is what I play on) is to go to your settings and turn lockpicking on simplified. I found it so much easier with a bit of practice
I managed to learn to pick locks or I 'feel' the locks now. I use the ESC button trick, where you close the minigame and re-open it again, if the golden ball is not close to the center of the lockpicking circle (smallest or close to small radius possible). Very necessary to do this when you start lockpicking from 0-2 levels. Now easy chests are truly easy and I can even pick hard chest using the same trick. Soon very hard and it will be lvl 20.
The shittiest lockpicking mechanism I've ever experienced. More than 4 years and it's still a nightmare for console players. Such a big disappointment for a game such as this.
