Prepping For Gravel RV Pad

- In this video, Deanna and I are starting to make preparations to get a gravel RV pad in place for the future on our property. We found the most level spot on the property that just so happened to have a mobile home in the same location at one point and started to get to work.
First step for us was getting the electric ran in so we didn't have to tear through any gravel. Now we are putting down some geotextile fabric in order to keep weeds out, hold the rock and dirt together, but also allow for water to drain through naturally.

I love how you guys are improving your property. You must be learning quite a lot along the way. Luckily, you two are not afraid to roll up your sleeves. Yep, marking where the water pipe is smart :) It looks great. Awesome job guys!

Is the fabric good to use to keep rock from sinking in ground? We have a 40k lbs motorhome and don’t know what to use to keep the rock from sinking
Hey there! From what I've researched myself the fabric does help lock the gravel in place. We mostly got it to hopefully help with the weeds. It probably depends on what type of soil you have underneath your RV spot, but maybe a mixture of the fabric and a thicker layer of larger rock could help spread the load. Then you could put a finer layer on top of that. I am no expert, but sounds like it may help your situation. :) - Shane

Nice project! I have never seen it being dome this way before, but I really like the idea. I guess that geo stuff breaks down naturally overtime if it can be buried?
Thanks sir! Yea, I saw a lot of other people going with this method as well. Hopefully it will add a little rigidity and keep the weeds out for a little while. I am sure it will break down over time, but it will probably take quite a long time. Since we want to use it as a RV pad/driveway, I am hoping it lasts for quite a while. Guess we will see!! - Shane
Hey! Love the homebase land and that sky is so pretty. It's a work in progress..took us a long time to get things prepped at our land. You'll get there...I see your future👍. Bummer they cut through your well water line. Do u guys have any plans for taking off in the RV again this year?
Thanks so much guys! For sure, although you all did have to start from scratch as where at least our land had somewhat of a home already here haha. For sure, slowly but surely making progress! :) Kind of a blessing that we know where the water line is. We also ended up having a leak in our line closer to the house and it turns out it was NOT a straight line to the house after all. Gooooood to know haha.
We hope to get the RV out once things warm up this year. Trying to remain flexible as we still aren't sure how different restrictions will impact different areas of the country. Good thing is if things get super unpredictable again, we have a place we can go back to and wait things out. Hope all has been well with you all! - Shane
What type of gravel did you use for this project? How is it holding up?
We ended up using crush and run as a base because we had to build up the pad a bit to make it more level. The sand and gravel mix helps lock things together for a nice compact area to park on. Some disadvantages is that even with the geotextile fabric underneath, weeds like crabgrass still seem to find enough minerals in that sand to take over the pad if not maintained properly. Ours will likely need another layer here soon as we have compacted it quite a bit with a few years of driving and parking on it. Another disadvantage is if you get really dry weather like we have had lately here in Virginia, that sand holding things together can actually start to blow away. So although it is cheaper and is a great base layer, we probably should have followed up with a good layer of stone on top once getting it to the proper height that we wanted. - Shane
