Absolutely lovely country. I've visited Tirana, Durres, Girocaster, Vlore, Skoder, Sarande, Ksamil, and Berat. (Spent several months in both Tirana and Vlore). The Albanian people are very welcoming, the nature spectacular, and the history and culture fascinating. I hope to return soon. I never experienced what he referred to as the "Gypsy thing". While they don't have Uber or Bolt, there are taxi compaines which allow you order rides via Whatsapp. The cities there are very walkable, and have good public trnsportation, so I used taxis mostly for city-to-city trips, or excursions outside of Tirana. One company in Tirana would not only make sure that I connected with the driver, but would check in with me throughout the journey tot make sure that I' felt safe. I had zero problems there as a woman travelling solo, but it was nice to know that someone was watching. Each of the cities has a very specific character, so you'll want to visit more than one. He mentioned Sarande and Durres for beach time, but in my opinion, Vlore is far more pleasant. Albania is definitely a country worth visiting.

As an Albanian, I went to Paris back in 2014 and got out of 1 of the metro stations and gypsies tried to scam me, they were holding some clip boards or something. Also the French taxi driver made a 20 Min drive from the airport into 1 hour, pretending he didn't know any English.

I've spent two months a year in Albania for the last two years. The locals are wonderful. The weather in Tirana and on the coast in winter is perfect (15-20⁰C) . I have travelled a lot of the country but I'm currently in Durres which has the biggest beach and is one of the largest cities on the Adriatic. I take taxis a lot in Durres and have never had an issue. Usually the ride costs around 500 Leke to go from the beach area to the city centre

First time I've seen any of your videos. I love your style--it's like I'm listening to a friend tell me about his trip and it feels personal and helpful. Never been to Albania, but always wanted to go. I remember when they were still communist and totally isolated from the world, so it was always a mysterious place that piqued my interest. One day I hope to live in Berlin and then I can visit Albania. Your video made me even more certain I want to visit at least for a few weeks! Thank you!

29:05 just south of Saranda on the coast is located the ancient city of Butrint. Many travellers go to Albania just to visit Butrint. By staying in Saranda you can visit Butrint or "Syri i Kalter" (Bue Eye spring).
So Saranda is not necessarily a city you would "skip" if you like history and culture. In fact Saranda and Gjirocastra are only a short drive from each other.

If a stranger gets into a squabble in Albania, that stranger likely caused the problem. The people go out of their way to be kind to foreigners. If you are talking about the Roma, they often cause their own problems. They don’t expect foreigners to know the rules and they give a lot of leeway. But if you act like an arrogant westerner, yes someone will call you on it.

  • @JayandSarah
    @JayandSarah 7 месяцев назад +1

At 15:22 of the video there is the red gate of the place we stayed in Korca in October 2023! We saw begging with the Roma population in both Tirana and Pogradec but didn't spend any time in Durres and never experienced anything I would qualify as a scam or criminal behavior, but that was just our experience during visits in both 2022 and 2023. Also, public buses are pretty easy to navigate in Tirana and it's also very walkable so as long as you have lek you shouldn't need to take taxis. An exception to this is maybe if you have a late night/early morning airport arrival. Buses from airport into centre of town and vice versa are very easy to navigate and are fixed price.

Thank you for the realistic account of the experience. Most tourists are too lazy to care about the culture and simply go for the clubs/restaurants/beaches. Which is ok, every tourist is a good tourist.
But having a westerner critique basic infrastructure services (like transportation, electricity) hopefully will wake up our institutions and society to do something about it and change. It’s difficult to imagine change when your culture is the only one you’ve known all your life and never left the country.
Also, albanians like to feel special and talk about “the most isolated communist country in eastern Europe”.
Which is the truth, obviously, because of the Hoxha regime policy of aligning itself first with the chinese against the Warsaw pact and then totally alone against everybody…
Nevertheless, communism was a fact of 30-40 years ago. Most youngsters don’t even know that era. They live in 2022, see the lack of opportunities and migrate.
Our problems TODAY are systemic corruption, big inequality, a culture of neglect for public spaces, lack of development and jobs.
True, a lot has changed, but we all have a responsibility to improve things and get closer to european standards, bit by bit.
The diaspora and educated youth have a big responsibility on this.
Let’s hope tourist’s criticism plays a role in waking us up too.

    Buon viaggio !

Good video but math is not your strong suit. There aren't 3 bunker's per person. There are around 3 million people in Albania the country, and around 750000 bunkers originally built (a fraction probably left now). So if you divide the population by the original estimate you get 1 bunker per 4 people.

A bit shocked at the gratuitous use of the word Gypsy in this video, which is considered derogatory and offensive like any other racial slur. Roma is the correct interpretation and it’s fairly sad that in this video about a beautiful country a clear decision was made to condemn one ethnic group which it’s clear he has no understanding of their history.
Roma people immigrated from Northern India to Eastern Europe and in particular Rome and were labeled Gypsy’s after fighting as mercenaries for the Romans in Egypt. The word Gypsy was derived from the word Egypt.
Roma people are a very proud ethnic minority in Europe who unfortunately in many countries have less rights than African Americans do post slavery in America.
The reason some of them are involved in illicit activities is because they aren’t allowed to participate in public education, jobs, housing and other social services.
Certainly, pickpockets and other criminal behavior takes away from any civil society but often being cut out of society creates the problem.
This happened in America either the Irish, Italians and others when they first immigrated and were treated as second class citizens which then stirred resentment and frustration towards a then organized criminal group.
This commentator while he’s clearly passionate about travel and exploring unique cultures hasn’t spent a lot of time understanding the Roma people which many of them in countries where they are treated more equally have successful businesses and lives.

I hope one day you will learn how to create productive video without racist phrases. You can watch thousands of videos about tourism, including scaming issues around the world. However, it has been created to highlight the issue without any generalised and racist phrases. I hope you are going to think about it 🙏

The people are ignorant and racist in Albania , But in the mountain and in the village the people are very kind. If you are not blonde and want to use the bus to go to another city, you must show your passport to the driver and his colleague

I am a person who travels often and I know what I am saying, the mentality of Albania is like the mentality of Hungarije (except Budapest) too closed, I am not talking about Albanians who have gone to university or have a certain level of education. There is no public transport in Albania, no trains and no buses between cities (public transport). If you want to travel between cities and you have non-blonde skin, the driver asks for your passport. There are many things to change, especially the mentality of Albania.

@@patrikevers3294 I totally 100% disagree, throughout history and in the present Albanian people have proven theirselves culturally and mentally not just inside Albania but throughout the world as the Albanian diaspora is very wide spread. About racism , Albanians are not racist but being lately opened to the mass tourism there are tourists from nationalities who have never set foot on Albanian land before so there may be people who are just surprised when encountering these nationalities for the first time. There's no Albanian without a certain level of education as it was and is mandatory.
The blonde comment was stupid as most Albanians are not blonde , as per the showing of your passport which I never heard before I don't blame the driver but Albania has been used lately as passage for illegal immigrants coming from middle east to turkey -greece - albania montenegro/ serbia and then eu union. If the bus driver get's stopped by the police having someone who illegaly crossed the border in his bus, he will be charged with human trafficking and risk 7-10 years in jail.
It's not that big of a deal as you're making it although it's the first time I hear that.

I have travelled to 90% of europe so I know how it is , you have to show your passport when travelling with flixbus or likewise companies even through schengen area which is meant to be free moving zone and there are police check controls often. So it's an EU policy not Albanian policy. Albania has trains , but they are old and not much used but will be modernised soon, there's public transport in all major cities for within the city (buses) and there's also public transport for city to city (mini buses or buses) so you're very much lying for everything you said. Try harder next time

I completely disagree with you. Anyway, this is the bad travel experience I've had so far. You have forgotten that in England and the European Union and in the United States many Albanian citizens presented until now as refugees and that they were well treated with respect for human rights. Despite this, many Albanians worked in the mafia. You must be fair. Why do Albanian refugees treat well outside Albania and why do you speak of refugees as bad? You have forgotten your past and your history and your news
