- On a rather clear winter Saturday, I decided to head down to Oceanside for the later part of the afternoon and evening to do some railfanning. Due to the looming quiet zone, I figured it was worth coming back since my last visit in 2014 to check out the newly renovated station and third platform for a comprehensive railfanning video before the QZ becomes active. Particularly on this Saturday, the Surfline was experiencing a rather significant amount of cascading delays. Contributors included a trespasser strike in Encinitas earlier in the day, most trains at or near capacity, late train turns, passenger disruptions, and train congestion to name a few ! Nonetheless, in regards to changes since my last visit here, it is interesting to note that the platform height is now almost entirely raised for platforms #1 and #3. The height is now nearly equivalent to the Surfliner equipment, making for significantly easier boarding. Likewise, the unmistakable new third platform was also intriguing to check out. In result of the new platform and siding track, new signaling has been placed to govern the new switch (CP Pacific) as well as crossovers just south of the station. This particularly helps with railfanning whenever a train enters the block and kicks off the signal indication. Similarly, there has also been a lot of development, particularly around Mission Avenue. Once was parking lots are now towering hotel and residential properties, and it appears that the development will continue to consume the open parking lots that used to be very prominent here. Consequently though, there also appears to be a greater abundance of transients compared to years prior. Thus, the prior existing security presence that used to be notorious here appears to have almost completely disappeared. Nevertheless, it is amazing to see how much train activity now exists compared to only a few years ago. In only four hours' time, 15+ trains can be seen through here. In the end, whether it is the multiple rail lines, diverse options of rail service, or nearby Downtown and beachfront access, the Oceanside Transit Center continues to serve as a vital location for public transit. Although a lot has changed in only four years, one can only conceive of what the prosperous future will hold for this station.
Train 1 : Coaster #688 with CabCar #2307 & F40PHM-2C #2105. Nice to see my personal favorite Coaster CabCar #2307 on the lead again !
Train 2 : Amtrak 1572 with P42DC #169 & CabCar #6908. Just as Coaster #688 departs, 1572 arrives into Oceanside. This train was running approximately 45 minutes behind schedule. Nice horn action departing.
Train 3 : Amtrak 774 with P42DC #154 & CabCar #6904. Awesome sounding K5LA and horn action from the engineer arriving. Nice to see my personal favorite Surfliner CabCar #6904 once again !
Train 4 : Amtrak 1579 with CabCar #6952 & F59PHI #451. Always good to see F59PHIs; particularly the first Surfliner F59PHI, #451 running its last trips on the Surfline.
Train 5 : Metrolink Deadhead with CabCar #682 & MP36PH-3C #889.
Train 6 : Metrolink #858 with MP36PH-3C #889 & CabCar #682. A uniquely interesting vantage point in my opinion !
Train 7 : Metrolink Deadhead with CabCar #638 & F59PH #869.
Train 8 : Metrolink #664 with MP36PH-3C #892 & CabCar #688. This trainset will proceed south to layover and will later be used for the northbound Metrolink #667.
Train 9 : Metrolink #860 with F59PH #869 & CabCar #638. Nice horn echoes as a result of the recent development.
Train 10 : Coaster #689 with F40PHM-2C #2105 & CabCar #2307. From this vantage point, one can see all the crossings in the city of Oceanside south of the station, including Cassidy St, Oceanside Blvd, & Wisconsin Ave in that order, respectively. All of which however are soon destined to become a quiet zone and additionally including the crossings of Mission Ave and Surfrider Way to the north as well.
Train 11 : Amtrak 583 with CabCar #6908 & P42DC #169. Not long after Coaster #689 terminates, Amtrak 583 approaches in the distance. Furthermore, Amtrak 580 can also be heard approaching from the north to meet with 583 ! 583 was running an hour behind due to the late 1572 train turn in San Diego.
Train 12 : Amtrak 580 with SC-44 #2113 & CabCar #6953. It is amazing how loud the new Siemens Charger horns are compared to similar equipment.
Train 13 : Coaster #692 with CabCar #2307 & F40PHM-2C #2105. Personally an interesting shot with the evening light and smoke emanating from the engine.
Train 14 : Metrolink #667 with CabCar #688 & MP36PH-3C #892. Nice engineer on #688.
Train 15 : Amtrak 785 with CabCar #6904 & P42DC #154. 785 was running an hour behind schedule due to the late train turn of 774 in addition to a passenger disturbance requiring police assistance at Carlsbad Poinsettia. After waiting and seeing my favorite CabCar arrive and depart into the evening, I called it a good day and headed home.
Thanks for Watching !
24:18 The Best Shot Of 4 Trains!
Yes, I need a little summer vacation to Oceanside
wish I could get there without having to change over in LA
Thats the only way unfortunately.. Get on from San Bernardino or Riverside and then you have to hit the terminal.
All five railroad crossings are expected to become quiet zones
Awesome Video my Friend!
CaliRail Thank you !
I saw 6904 on triple 7
I’ve road trains ever since 2018
Great stuff! I feel like a bit of a railfan villain, because I worked to help build that quiet zone...
ziggypwner Thanks ! And boo ! Haha, jk. It’s all good, no worries. Although most railfans will undoubtedly prefer the horns, it is always good to see progress along the rails and the improvement of sound pollution and the quality of life to those communities the trains pass through. I am certain many folks will appreciate your contribution pertaining to the QZ.
my favorite train station on god's green earth! Awesome video

When does the quiet zone go into effect? I need to get down there soon.
NorCalRailfan The City of Oceanside should be wrapping up the construction for the QZ sometime this month or by February. Although no specific date has been set yet, it is anticipated that the QZ will become active sometime this spring.
Horrible news. But thanks for the information.
NorCalRailfan No problem.
2:59 2105? Sounds familiar
Awesome Video:)
Copper Cruz Thank you !
;)
Can you railfan San Bruno?
InlandEmpireRailfan Yes, I’ll certainly consider and note it. I’m not sure when I’ll head over there yet though since Caltrain is currently undergoing its electrification construction.
Yeah and the Surfliner is undergoing construction lol
What Happened To The Cabcar 6908?
Rhett Ross Albert What specifically ? The CabCar was functioning as intended. The crew might’ve forgotten to turn on the marker lights for the southbound Amtrak 1572.
What Metrolink line is that?
Both Metrolink’s Inland Empire - Orange County Line and Metrolink’s Orange County Line go to Oceanside.
