Such a tragedy, I write as the son of survivor . My father came home "shattered" and he never forgot the trauma and the useless slaughter. It was only in his dying days that he revealed the true horror to my brothers an me. He served with the Gordon Highlanders, at the Somme and Pachendale. I am now in my 90th year, and I vividly remember seeing the results in the wounded survivors - T he war to end war- and it all happened again, and again.
I wish this edit lasted a few more seconds so that you get the jarring transfer to the reality of them in the railway station looking at the empty rail line.
+Charlotte H British casualty rates were about 11.5% thats less than 1 in 5, dont mean to belittle the deaths but its a myth that casualty rates were unprecidented.
I have to admit, the clips of the songs themselves really don't do this film justice. In all I think it was about the only way a movie musical about World War 1 could be without turning either too sanctimonious (like Miss Saigon) or too frivolous (like This Is The Army). A brilliant film with so many layers of meaning that stylizes violence without trivializing it too much.
IT HAS TO BE BORN IN MIND--THIS IS NOT, A MUSICAL IN THE NORMAL SENSE OF THE WORD. THIS IS A SATYRICAL MOCU-DRAMA , WITH MUSIC OF THE PERIOD AS ( AND THIS IS IMPORTANT) SUNG BY THE TROOPS. SO NOT INTENDED TO BE SLICK AND TOO PROFESSIONAL , BUT , VERY BAWDY. EVEN THEN , I SUSPECT THEY 'CLEANED ' IT UP A BIT.
Always felt the fairground idea was a genius way to convey the futility of War and after two World Wars we still never learn especially with Megalomaniac President Putin 🤷♂️
NEVER SAW the s tage version, only the movie version. saw it on an afternoon, there was no spirit of anyghing in the audience, only a few people there. so i did notreally love the movie, i am afraid. but this goodbyee song ... did someone not have a hit with it in the mid 1970s? i would love them to sing this song at my cremation one day!!! would they allow it?
I remember it being on a beer advert, did a search and it was Worthington E.. Did another search and found out it was Pete Waterman...www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=13479
It wasn't much of a hit, as such, but it was quite well known, played here and there on various radio stations after the film came out. It's the kind of thing the Bonzos and/or Viv Stanshall came out with. The Goons and/or Spike Milligan and the Goodies had a song along the lines of 'Goodbye' at or around the same time. Goons probably earlier, but a lot of that stuff gets played over and over so it was hard to know exactly when it first came out and who by (not now, the internet is valuable for that).
It closed in 1975 because the structure was deemed unsafe. There followed a couple of decades of nobody prepared to do or spend money saving it. Part of the land end collapsed in the 90s leaving the rest to deteriorate as an island.it caught fire in 2002, local conspiracy theorists believe it was the owners of the other pier, which destroyed the remaining buildings leaving just a skeleton. Since then various seasonal storms have removed further bits.

Awful. I do believe that we will learn how to not fight. It will take a few generations, but we will get there…
The look on her face and the shot of empty tracks really conveys the grim reality: very few came back.
I love the subtle way her dress conveys at least something of the nurse's uniforms; Just one of the many little details the film gets right.
Una película en verdad muy icónica en mostrar las miserias de la guerra de una forma muy original.

BLOODY TOO RIGHT--RUDDY ADVERT SPOILD THE VID.

@@haydneasy9736 I'm too late for this, but they were talking about the characters they gave them to.

the look at the end
You cut out the best part at the end when it shows the mother at the train station.
Yes--very disappointing. One of the most poignant moments of reality in the film
Overall KIA rate 12.5%, for officers 17%,. Eton lost 20% of those who served

The Bertie Wooster generation slaughtered in France 😔
The Bertie Wooster generation were still children during WWI
Brighton Pier :)
Actually, the West Pier, before it all fell into the sea.
For decades, I could not discover WHICH of the two piers was destroyed; hoping like hell it wasn't the films Pier---GUTTED--like the PIER.
Didn't it burn FIRST?
