New Lamborghini Huracán STO - is it faster than a McLaren P1? | evo LEADERBOARD

  • It's the most extreme Lamborghini Huracán to date and also happens to be one of our favourites, with its mix of Super Trofeo race tech mixed with that brilliant V10. But how quickly will this 2021 eCoty podium finisher lap Anglesey's Coastal circuit? We sent Jethro Bovingdon to find out.
    Read our Lamborghini Huracán STO review here tinyurl.com/4j24zcsu and don't forget to buy your copy of evo from www.evo-shop.co.uk (because that's what pays the bills to make these films)

      Otherwise im completely in agreement. Cars or especially supercars really are not anywhere near optimised for performance around a track and thus laptimes are pointless. Look how much faster a real track car (BAC mono) is.

      These comparisons are almost never fair in that respect. All the lap times should be on the same tire. I know that's nearly impossible considering that EVO doesn't own these cars, but that time sheet is essentially worthless when you consider that a proper tire would net, at least, 2-3 seconds a lap.

      No doubt also different cars and setups require different driving styles. A traction heavy AWD lambo will require a different approach than a RWD light mclaren for example.

      The Pista is far from normal, but I get what you’re saying lol. Having as much track hardware that it does, the engine that was essentially ripped straight from the race car, and putting down the kind of lap times that it does puts the Pista faaaar above the “normal” category.
      When you’re out there beating GT2 RS times, are neck and neck with the 765, and are significantly faster than the best performing Huracan that money can buy, you are a pretty *abnormal* super car.

      Supposed to be as grippy? C'mon, man. That's just pure speculation. Considering how many different factors there are in a tire (compound, treadwear, heat cycling, size, and especially, tread pattern, etc.) it's basically impossible to say one tire is as grippy as another without actual data on the tire which manufacturers NEVER release to the public.

    • @coolguy_2997
      @coolguy_2997 Год назад

      Actually you should be quicker than this Lambo in this turn since the gtr has better front end grip (known for that due to weight distribution), wider front tires and Toyos are also way more stickier than these Bridgestones - so you certainly have room for improvement here :))

    • @adamfreeman3000
      @adamfreeman3000 Год назад

      @@coolguy_2997 Hmm not sure I agree a GT-R should be quicker through here. Physics suggests otherwise. It's 400kgs heavier, narrower track, higher CoG, front engined so will have a significantly worse polar moment of inertia, is capable of considerably less lateral acceleration, and I doubt there'd be much (if any) difference in coefficient of friction between a Toyo R888R (which is a pretty entry level trackday tyre) and Bridgestones 'custom potenza race tyre'. Watching the onboard it simply looks like a poor line/technique through Turn 1... Turn in is way too early, car is loitering on the apex and understeering as a result, revs holding on part throttle well before the apex and for 2-3 seconds which suggests little/zero trail braking.... Anything mid engined will want to understeer, the way to counteract that is 1) late braking 2) late turn in and 3) trail braking deep into the apex... from the onboard the driver isn't doing any of these 3 things. Oh yeah and hitting the limiter all the way down the back straight lol, this is a poorly driven lap IMHO. (And turn in/apex at T7 'Peel' looks at least 3 meters too early)

Having done literal dozens of track days and autocrosses, I can assure you nobody is on track to prove which car was faster in showroom trim. You buy a car bc it’s a good platform and you pick tires for the situation. You swap tires at the event and you compete to prove who’s the best driver in class (or overall) and that’s how everyone does it. In the end when you get results in spite of your car it’s more rewarding than this car-leaderboard bs.

    Why any performance car even considers coming with Bridgestones these days is beyond me. Michelin is making a far superior modern tire. Can't be that much more expensive and let's be honest, at this price point you should be going for the very best anyways

    • @flyingphoenix113
      @flyingphoenix113 Год назад +4

      Depends on the usage. Speaking from expeirence: the Michelins are hot garbage over a longer session on track. They are one lap hero tires that fall off quickly, which is why they are popular with OEMs--they are great for bragging rights and winning superficial comparison tests. The Bridgestones produce better steering feel and more consistent performance across a broader thermal range (albeit, at an appreciably slower pace, at least, on the first lap). In a sense, they are a much better track day tire even if they are a rather poor hotlap tire.

    People need to listen to what he is saying, faster does not always means better. What is the point in a car so fast, AKA 720S or 911 Turbo if at legal speeds on the public road it is a none event to drive, a car also needs to be fun to drive on the public road at 50-70mph and even slower. That is why the Ferrari 458 & Speciale are so damn perfect, that is why this STO and the EVO RWD are also so good. Yes there are faster cars but due to speed limits, cameras everywhere it is not legal or socially acceptable to be driving a car at 130mph plus on the public highway to get the fun factory, a truly great car is a car that is not only seriously quick but also fun at the lower speed stuff, well done Lamborghini !

    • @JCviggen1
      @JCviggen1 Год назад +1

      While true, it's actually hard to do in these cars so I'd partially blame Lambo for it. In its angriest mode you have to use the paddles but it's hard to "feel" by ear or acceleration where the shift point is with this engine. It sort of sounds like you're not there yet and keeps pulling harder and then it unexpectedly bangs into the limiter. Needs quite a bit of practice to train your ears as the revs climb quickly and the digital rev counter is hard to interpret properly when you only have 0.1s to look down at it in between two corners. On top of all that the revs are climbing so quickly that in lower gears you have to anticipate the delay between pulling the paddle and the actual shift happening which means pulling the paddle quite a bit before the red line. It would take more time to get used to than these kind of tests usually have allocated.
