We need more 'badass' teachers like Phil to help NQT's. He makes it look a breeze but it is anything but easy when you work with teenagers. Kids respond to him because he shows respect for them. He doesn't yell and tell like too many teachers, he encourages students to feel that their contributions are worthwhile. Phil surely has wise thoughts to share with them that he gradually puts into the mix but they can be added later as needed. Teaching is great when our students teach us something new. I recently re-read his book 'How to Teach' and I recommend it to many teachers. He excels in find creative ways of teaching that entice rather than repel e.g. the tennis match. No matter how brilliant you are, students won't let you teach them anything until they like and respect you. The students obviously like and respect Phil. As a teacher who spends hours reading essays I endorse what Phil said at the end - it's only when you read your students work that you get a real sense of who they are and that is important.

He was frankly enough way ahead of his time. Nowadays there's a lot of scientific evidence that supports the merits of using formative assessment. He was already doing this in (the year this video was recorded) I love his dedication. The downside of giving feedback on so much work is the fact that it's massively time-consuming. But I do have one day off (and despite my colleague's protests) I want to spend that day improving my teaching methods; Teaching is truly a calling ;-).

The argument tennis activity is the best thing I have seen in a while; Seeing him ascend on his chair on top of the desk just illustrates what a bad-ass teacher he is. I literally aspire to become as good as him :D

I studied at Eastlea during this time and he wasn't nearly as respected as the documentary makes it out to be. Heck, I was around when the filming crew arrived, he took a drama lesson for us (not our usual drama teacher) and it didn't make it into the show. No one cared about him. Not to be mean to him, as an adult I understand what he was trying to do but it is also important to highlight how TV shows are made to look.

Anyone know of any other websites where I can watch videos of Phil Beadle teaching?
