The funny part about Welsh is that while the spelling seems entirely alien to an English speaker, its actually pretty much phonetically one-to-one (one letter for one sound), making it easy to pronounce any word once you learn what each letter represents. The issue is that a lot of the letters are pronounced entirely differently from their English usage. The best examples here are Welsh 'w' which makes the sound of English 'oo' or 'u', while Welsh 'll' makes a unique phoneme that doesn't exist in English, called a lateral fricative. Its basically an English 'l' with air blown past the sides of your tongue, which makes it sound a bit like a weird English 'sh'.

I was mind blown when I realized that the Chronicles of Prydain was based on Wales. It's not actually a Welsh series though. It was written by an American called Lloyd Alexander, who was stationed in Wales during WWII and was very inspired by Welsh Folklore. Welsh folklore is tied into a lot of "English" stories as well, as a lot of the Arthurian lore is directly lifted from Welsh mythology. Other notable books that mention or use Welsh Folklore to some extent are "The Dark is Rising" sequence has settings that are also based on locations in Wales. Diana Wynne Jones also has at least two books that reference Wales. In the book Dogsbody, the characters encounter magical "underworld" hounds described as white with red ears - a reference to Arawn's hounds in the Mabinogi. The characters even mention the name Arawn in reference to the character they counter, though it is unclear if it's actually meant to be that character from myth. In the book "Howl's Moving Castle" - as a note: the later Ghibli movie has an almost completely different plot - the titular character Howl is actually from Wales and has come to a magical realm to be a badass wizard. I believe there were aspects of Tolkien's work that were also inspired by Wales - or at least by the Welsh language - as Tolkien was reportedly very fond of the language and has said "Welsh is of this soil, this island, the senior language of the men of Britain; and Welsh is beautiful".

Or forcing the hero to not face him in single combat but instead amidst a field of arrows, so while struggling to didge them yourself youd lose track of how many had hit him. 26:04 I recommend, if you are up to the task of editing the long video into smaller videos, is to do something similar to what you said but instead of livestream you just make one long video. You set your timer/alarm on your phone for about every hour and take a break (one hour on, one hour off or even shorter, like one video on, a few minutes off), turning the camera off at the start of the break and turning it back on when you start again. That way you can still pay attention, enjoy yourself, and you won’t get too overwhelmed or bored. You can then cut that long video into smaller videos. The only thing you really need is the dedication and maybe some editing software to cut the video into smaller videos.
Welsh is easily the Celtic language that got fucked up the hardest by the British, and that's saying something when it was pretty weird as Celtic languages go to begin with. At least it has its own BBC channel now with programming mostly in Welsh so it's paradoxically also one of the most well-preserved Celtic languages at the same time. Welsh is the most Fae of the Celtic languages that way.
It looks to me less like the Welsh language was screwed over by the English, and more like the Welsh themselves decided to take their pain out on the Latin Alphabet. You don’t decide ‘Pwish’ should be spelled like ‘Pwyll’ unless you’re in serious need of therapy.
I do hope that all those Towns and Places in the USA with "New" first, are just the copy and paste Names of Places that existed before in the UK and somewhere else
I mean, there is a number of "new" places that are right next to the "old" places, which for me is a bit funnier than old place being on different continent than new one
And then she never covered any Welsh myths again (You could maybe count her King Arthur one because king Arthur was originally a figure in Welsh mythology, but she only covered the English version so it doesn't really count.) (Note: She did pronounce Pwyll incorrectly.) (Second Note: You actually pronounced the Welsh words surprisingly well compared to most Americans at least on youtube.)
Just sit down and watch half a year of OSP then slowly drip feed it out while you do the next half years of content meaning it would take about 20 sittings if they have a decades worth of content or you could do 1/4 of a years worth of content over 40 sittings

The only thing I found a little dumb is the second tale, because yeah, pwyll is too honourable to say no, but one of his friends could just go "ok, I also want a boon, to be able to kill this guy who is trying to steal your wife". There, done.
I loved this video, I am surprised you didn't do a Halloween episode.
I do hope that all those Towns and Places in the USA with "New" first, are just the copy and paste Names of Places that existed before in the UK and somewhere else
I mean, there is a number of "new" places that are right next to the "old" places, which for me is a bit funnier than old place being on different continent than new one
So are they saving him for Grand Rider or What? How many Quartzes do I need to save up
Heres to hoping Puppet history the black plague is still on queue
punalixed, my new favorite adjective.
Thanks for this reaction.
And then she never covered any Welsh myths again (You could maybe count her King Arthur one because king Arthur was originally a figure in Welsh mythology, but she only covered the English version so it doesn't really count.)
(Note: She did pronounce Pwyll incorrectly.)
(Second Note: You actually pronounced the Welsh words surprisingly well compared to most Americans at least on youtube.)
... Huh, usually I just get the words totally wrong. 😯
She probably didn't cover any more of the myths because trying to get the pronunciation even close to right was giving her a headache.
@@Airier While they are still wrong, most Americans on youtube get it significantly worse.
@@brigidtheirish Maybe that's the case, but also it really isn't that difficult so she was probably being quite overdramatic.
@@AlysIThink101 It isn't that difficult? Have you *tried* pronouncing Welsh names correctly when you aren't familiar with the language?
Nice episode.
Just sit down and watch half a year of OSP then slowly drip feed it out while you do the next half years of content meaning it would take about 20 sittings if they have a decades worth of content or you could do 1/4 of a years worth of content over 40 sittings

be careful with red early videos and when I mean early I mean the classic summarised videos with movie clips I don't know much but it is better to be careful around them.

The pronunciation of pwyll hurts me, red’s is pretty good but not perfect but that’s fine.
